Question 1: Post a hand for evaluation.
NL 4 T9s

Question 2: Evaluate one of the hands submitted by other members.
Nl5 99

Question 3: Consider the following situation:

$100 NL Hold'em (9 handed)

Stacks & Stats:
UTG ($100)
UTG+1 ($100)
MP1 ($100)
MP2 ($100)
Hero ($100)
CO ($100)
BU ($100)
SB ($100)
BB ($100) (18/15/3.7/23/732)[VPIP/PFR/AF/WTS/Hands]

Preflop: Hero is BU with 8h , 9h
4 folds, Hero raises to $4.00, 3 folds, BB calls $4.00

Flop: ($8.50) 3h , 6h , 8d (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $5.50 BB calls $5.50

Turn: ($19.50) Jh (2 players)
BB checks, Hero...

What action would you take, and why?
In this situation I think our only option is to bet. If we check we are giving a free card which could be a heart which weakens our hand. I would bet pretty big ~$16 or more. If opponent raises then considering his AF I would be less inclined to re-raise and would maybe call depending on odds. I dont think a worse hand is paying us off if we decide to push.

BONUS Question 4 (optional question): Consider the following situation:

$200 NL Hold'em (6 handed)

Stacks & Stats:
MP2 (Hero) ($327.95)
MP3 ($207.45)
CO ($415.55) (TAG)
BU ($373.60) (TAG)
SB ($200.00)
BB ($218.00)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with 7h , 8h
Hero raises to $7, 1 folds, CO raises to $23, BU calls $23, SB folds, BB folds, Hero calls $16

Flop: ($72) 7c , 8s , 8d (3 players)
Hero checks, CO checks, BU bets $52, Hero calls, CO calls

Turn: ($228) Kd (3 players)
Hero checks, CO checks, BU checks

River: ($228) Qh (3 players)
Hero bets $110, CO raises to $340.55 (All-in), BU folds, Hero?

What factors and concepts that you have learned so far would you use in evaluating this situation? What would your action be?

Pre-flop
Since CO is labelled as a TAG I would think his 3-bet indicates a relatively strong hand especially considering our open raise UTG which indicates a strong range.

Flop
CO checking the flop indicates to me that he possibly has overcards rather than overpair. 77 is possibility also but unlikely. BUs bet doesnt give us much of an idea of his range as he is probably trying to take down the pot. Once we call CO gets good odds and I would suggest that he calls due to this.

Turn
K is definitely in both ranges. CO may check hoping for BU to take another stab at the pot. Although he would surely see that BU wouldnt try to take the pot down again when two players called his flop bet unless he had a strong range.

River
His raise doesnt necessarily indicate huge strength as he may not put us on a made hand. AK and AQ may play this way maybe KQ also. I think we can rule out K8, Q8. QQ, KK are definitely still in his range so it is a very tough call. Honestly at the table I would call this without hesitation but my judgement is clouded by my main experience being against fish going to showdown with weak hands.

Sorry for delayed answer, I have been moving to new country so it did take me to set up everything at my place, now I am back and starting to evaluate the homeworks. :)

Good Job! Homework #8 Done!

About Question #3:
In this case, the right answer is quite obvious. Both AF and WTS speak in favor of a check behind for bluff induce. But your hand is too strong here, so you want to get it all-in on the turn. There are a lot of hands you still have to protect against, too. Playing for bluff induce or pot control would simply be too weak and dangerous.

About Question #4:
About preflop play I'd say that it's still doable while we even are a bit deeper. I expect the hero to play solid postflop play. So Calling is definitely fine here with having 2 opponents in the hand and getting great implied odds. But for more beginners it's definitely a very close spot while they ain't gonna be able to lay down weak hands.

As we have the information that CO is a TAG player. Therefore, we expect him to have a strong 3bet range. Unless we have some other information like he has a wide 3bet range. But while we don’t have that, we basically consider his range to be something QQ+, AK or sometimes even tighter.

So now you have to ask yourself what kind of hands would play like this on river? KK may slowplay like this. QQ definitely is as well in his range. AK/AA he wouldn’t play this way since he know himself as well that he isn’t going to get Called by worse hands. So basically it’s up to the nuts most often. You only beat bluff there and I don’t expect the opponent to bluff in this case unless we know the table dynamics better.

Best of Luck in The Exam!

Hey Veriz,
How did my exam go?
I have been doing some analysis of my game according to the excellent Database Doctor videos by Bogdan. As you know I have been doing very well at NL4 6max and have been analyzing my play on this limit to find leaks before moving up.

One leak I have found is that my win rate in SB is -25BB/100 which I know is far too low. My win rate in BB is only -21BB/100 however so that is encouraging. Before I started this analysis, in an unopened pot in SB I would generally fold a very large proportion of my range as I was afraid of playing OOP with weak holdings. I have loosened up my range since and I hope to see improved results especially as I think I have improved my postflop play.

I want to ask you about my fold to 3bet% stat.
It is 59% overall. I play 23/17. I play quite tight in EP and MP and fold less to 3bets in these positions (~40%) but this could be down to small sample size as well as the fact that my range is much stronger if I raise from these positions. Is 59% ok overall? I know it is a very situation dependent stat and I dont want to be aiming for a specific number but I would like to have a guideline.

Cheers,
Kevin.

Hey mate,

funny thing that the system doesn't really work out cause they have to send me them by email and then I can look at it. Though I haven't received yet any emails from stuff, so I will ask them to do that! Right away.

Before you taking a look at the position stats you should be asking if you have enough of hands? :) For those kind of stats you gonna need a lot more hands than just 10k, we may even talk about 100k.

Fold to 3bet being 59%? It might be a huge leak of yours, I strongly recommend taking a look at your filter which tells you how much you earn with calling 3bets. Unless you understand very good what you doing preflop/postflop you wont play very profitable this way. Also take into account that sample is is important here. What's the sample?

I was analysing all my NL4 6-max hands = 37,000

Not a huge sample but it is the biggest 6max sample I have.

For the call 3bet I have earned 360 BB/100 hands but this is only for 170 hands so I won't get too excited yet!

I have moved up to NL10 again. On a bit of a downswing but I am going to stick with it for a bit longer than last time. I know I can crush NL4 so its just a matter of time before I do the same in NL10. I'm posting plenty of hands anyway.

I am trying to stick to my successful game but it can be tough especially with variance and more aggression preflop at NL10.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers,
Kevin.

Hey Kevin,

Glad to hear that you aren't losing money when calling 3-bets but most importantly it's good to see that you don't call a lot either (one of the biggest mistakes people make at the lower limits).

As you get used to NL10 I would recommend that you play shorter sessions and less tables (at least at first) and try to review your game a bit more.

Analyzing your own hands and posting hands is a great way to make sure you are always working on your game.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Thanks Bogdan.

By the way do you know if I passed the beginners course? I know there was the whole situation with Veriz so if you can't find out it's ok.

Cheers,
Kevin.
