Hey guys,

Had 2 sweat sessions with a winning mid stakes player, got some points on which to work on but he also said "im baffled why your losing i can only guess its to do with lack of concentration". Time for a TMGP review, right ?

Language Learning

I think that most of us usually have a language that we would like to learn put on our someday/maybe to do list (and we all know we will never do it unless take charge of our life and not let all the urgent things take over it). And I also think that most of the people wanting to learn a new language have this misconception about doing it, as being something hard, very time consuming and also usually correlated with some strong negative emotions from our foreign languages classes in school.

From my recent experience this is very wrong (gratefully) as it is possible to learn a completely new language in a matter of weeks and doing it is also quite easy and fun. We just did it wrong in the past, and the whole educational system got it wrong. Next I'll share with you the 3 teaching methods I know to give very good results, you'll be amazed at how quickly it is to learn a new language if you do it the right way.

First method is through Michel Thomas courses . I personally experienced learning German through his courses and all I can say is that after only 8 hours listening to his audio recordings I knew more German than french (which I studied for 8 years in school), I was pretty amazed. Basically the method is based on what he calls "natural way of learning" which is totally the opposite of memorizing charts and grammar rules, it is about learning through speaking. Once I'm done with the advanced course and the vocabulary one (they are 4 hours, 2 hours respectively long) I'll be hitting the German forums myself

Second method is through Pimsleur courses. I did not personally experience with these ones, but one of my friends did and it basically seems to be the same as above except for a bigger focus on pronunciation.

Third method Benny the Irish polyglot If you live in a foreign country or by any circumstances you are surrounded by foreign people you have to take a look at this.

Fourth Method
http://duolingo.com/#/welcome - A nice online app with mobile app in development. Thanks Ingrid!

This is it for today guys, hope this helped some of you.

Heh.. I have known German language when I was a child, learned it in the natural way through tv. I was able to speak and I practiced it with my grandfather! :)

But as the time passed, I grown older and had other priorities, that didn`t include german language, so I forgot it.. not all, I basically understand everything if people speak, but I can`t speak myself. Hope I`ll be able to start learn it soon... and to that, I hope we will meet in german forums soon!! :]

It is easy to do if you know nothing about the foreign language,I'm sure you will find it very very easy if you already understand spoken language

Hello my followers,

Today I will to talk about sleep optimization

First a little theory about how we sleep. Our sleep is separated int cycles, and each cycle goes through 5 steps in a specific order. We have stage 1 - when we close the eyes first and begin to relax and then it goes deeper and deeper through the following 3 stages, stage 3 and 4 being called deep sleep. In these 2 stages you are restoring yourself and your brain is the least active. After stage 4 our brains starts firing - this is called REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) - this is the stage in each our brain activity is similar to the awake state and this is also the time when we are dreaming.

In order to optimize your sleeping time and even decrease your total sleeping time while feeling better than before you have to keep in mind 2 main factors.

Your body temperature This is mainly affected by how much physical exercise you are getting throughout the day. For best results take a 10-15 min jog first thing after you wake up (and drink a glass of water) and exercise in the evening as well, but not prior to going to bed (keep at least a 4h distance). I personally do my convict conditioning training 4 hours before bed.

Sunlight exposure Our awake state is directly related to how much sunlight is hitting our retina. This is the main reason why people are sleeping more in the winter as a whole.
One good fix to this is to take the morning jog, you get exposed to natural sunlight and also get your body temperature up. Also try to think creatively and always try to get as much sunlight as possible during the day, for example take your lunch break outside your office, or read in your garden. We as poker players are quite affected by this as we tend to stay all the day in front of a computer and never get as much sunlight as we should.
Other solution might be buying a bright light box, especially good in the winter when you can't really get much sunlight whatever you do because it is cloudy most of the time.

Other smaller things that will improve your sleep quality:
Napping Never go for more than 45 minutes because you will have a great chance to enter deep sleep and then you feel very tired when you wake up. I keep mines at 15 minutes. Napping is a something natural as there is a decrease in our body temperature in the evening - most people use some drug like caffeine to get over this sloop.

Sleep in total darkness
It appears that the melatonin secretion is influenced even by the light that touches your skin. Melatonin is the sleep hormone, without it you can't rest properly so you don't want it in small quantities.

Keep a good level of hydration SF has a section on this

Don't sleep on your front Sleep on your side or on your back

Don't wear sunglasses unless the UV level is high ( it is lowest at sunrise and sunset). Don't wear them just to be cool, your sleep will be affected.

Hot bath It gets your body temperature up and then it will decrease slowly as your sleep neediness sensation goes up. Good to take 60-90 minutes prior to bed.

Important stuff if you want to decrease your sleep amount You need to keep a regular time period for sleeping which INCLUDES weekend days. Otherwise you will not sustain any changes because your sleep clock will always get confused.

Hey,

just ask here any questions you have and I will do my best to respond.

Sleeping on your front is back for your posture and I would sugest for you to just try it, I was sleeping on my front all the time but I feel better after I switched to sleeping on my back, experiment with yourself.

I read a book on this which was called Powerful sleep secrets, but as I said, feel free to ask me anytime :).

Interesting post on sleep you wrote there. I'm quite fascinated with sleep and would love to practise polyphasic sleep one day but I just don't think my social life could deal with it.

Actually I have trouble with napping so I'm not sure I could ever do it. Take for instance yesterday, set my alarm and went for a 40 minute nap, woke up 12 hours later. :f_biggrin:

I can only get asleep if I sleep on my front, not sure what I could do to fall asleep on my back.

For a few days this week I've been going for a 20 minute jog, think it's really helped my focus but due to a cold I've let myself off today and yesterday but will definitely have to start doing it again tomorrow.

I see a lot of myself in you, hope you succeed with your goals!

Heh.. similar to me. sometimes when I take a power nap it ends up for me sleeping 2hours instead of 40min..

After 40min when I try to get up, the sleep is so dam good, that I postpone my alarm for another hour or so and enjoy it!

Raknyo: poliphasic sleep and social life are not compatible imo - was loving the idea myself but I gave up on it. I'm happy now though with my 6h sleep/day and feeling good throughout the day. Do you know about the Learning to win skype group? If you are anmything like me you should deff be in it

For both of you try setting the alarm to 15-20-30 min, you should find a sweet spot where you wake up refreshed and ready to go.

I've managed to get my body clock to be fine with 6h sleep a day. This is due to having to get up for work at 6am and never going to sleep before midnight. The problem I have is on my days off, I would like to fully alter my sleep pattern to 6 hours, but on my days off I always have a good 8 or 9 hours just because I can

Sleeping 8h/day and going to bed at a regular time is the nuts for me :). Some quite interesting stuff there DeMarco!
