Day 6 (2015.10.19)
What a weird day it was. Sat down to play and immediately felt annoyed and tilted. For no reason. I was a bit surprised and tried to fight through that feeling but had to stop eventually. Took a break, spent some time working on a huge Spin & Go HUD, relaxed a little. Came back later in the evening to play some more - but feeling was still there. Don't really understand the reasons for it. As a result - worst day of the challenge so far. I made bad calls and bad bluffs out of frustration a lot, so it's kinda tough to pick couple of hands for the report, will try. Quick look at WTSD which is almost 28% tells the whole story - although W$SD is almost 50%. Going to think it through this morning and will sit down to play afternoon with hopefully better mindset.
I've also played some Spin&Go's, tested out the HUD, took part in the promo. Not much of a profit though.
Hands: 3043 (total 18122) in 4 sessions of 2NL Zoom SH

Spin & Go's: 14 played with net +3$

Went through hands - I had it all yesterday. Bad beats, coolers, coin-flip - everything went wrong. Made a good fold too - well, I think this is a good fold.
Hand #15 - folding Aces

Have no idea why - but I put him on flush draws mostly and called down. Although there are sets, weird two pairs and even Qx (including those with FD) hands in his range. He donked in 3-way pot and even a 41/35 fish might have those. I guess I was annoyed at this point and could think it through.
Hand #17 - I think I might've played it well - 0.75$ goes to asimos
Solution recap - learn to play 3bet pots OOP, don't 4bet shove medium strength hands and isolate yourself vs stronger range.

Blind vs blind is confusing sometimes. The guy on BB is 58/37 over just 19 hands with 65bb stack and 3bets me for the first time. I think my ATo is ahead of his range but at the same time I don't really what to call 3bet OOP. Same goes for small 4bet - if he calls - I'm OOP, although with initiative, but in low SPR and most of the time - with no flop hit. On the other hand I might 4bet/fold if he 5bet shoves - because probably his 5bet-shove range is tighter than a 3bet range.
All in all I've decided to 4bet-shove myself, folding out perhaps part of his range as well. I'm not sure if that's the correct decision. What would be better here though? Call 3bet? Small 4bet/fold? Or just a simple fold?

Hand 17
imo shoving without reads is not optimal. And can be a big mistake vs a lot of opponents in these stakes.
you could have a shove / fold strategy from sb, but again imo is not the optimal strategy. However, if you construct carefully your shoving range this could work making your life easier.
playing 3bet pots oop is a skill you need to develop if you are to move up.
now raising 3x vs a 68bb is fine. However, if villain's stack size was smaller I would consider to raise smaller...
As nitty as it looks, vs relatively unknown, in your shoes, I prefer to fold this spot. When I have the reads I can do a lot of adjustments.
The standard vs a normal opponent would be to call this hand. But there is nothing wrong with folding when you are not sure about the information you have / villain tendencies.
But this particular villain seems a fish. So we have post flop advantage, right? So now we should be even more keen to call.
But if you don't feel comfortable, just fold until you know he 3bets wide enough / you have post flop reads etc.
What I am trying to say is that our decisions should depend on our skills. You ended up shoving this hand, which reveals that playing 3bet pots oop is not your best. So, although calling might be the most +ev line... that doesn't necessarily mean you should call. Develop those skills first... then you start calling wider.
Tip: how much should villain 3bet in order shoving w ATo be profitable? (Assume a reasonable calling range)
*4bet pots are the easiest to play bc of small spr / now position advantage is not such important.
Hey, great blog!! really cool twist on the BR challenge!!
I'll def sub, didnt have time read through all of it so far but I did look at one hand and I can offer you some insight.
Hand 10: TT.
Parts of your thinking are right. Your hand is probably doing well vs his 3betting range, what you need to consider however is that players on the microstakes have 1 part for value + pure bluffs. His overall 3b is 6% which is on the lower side, not a super aggro guy. Still, BB vs SB he'll probably 3b a bit more than that. However, your hand being good vs his overall 3b range and your hand doing well vs his calling range is two different stories. When you 4bshove, you probably isolate yourself vs a range of JJ+ and AQ, against which you have underdog equity:
Equity Win Tie
MP2 40.11% 39.91% 0.20% TT
MP3 59.89% 59.69% 0.20% JJ+, AQs+, AQo+
Thus, you can't really 4bshove for value. So what option does it leave you? Folding is too tight since we're doing good vs his range. -> calling seems the best option preflop.
GL on your journey!
asimos, vonki, thank you guys for your input.
I totally agree that I'm not confident playing 3bet pots OOP - I did mention it earlier. That's the main reason I tend to overbet 4bet-shove sometimes. And I think both hands you've suggested the best option - fold ATo, call TT. Money transferred, enjoy ![]()
But how should I improve playing 3bet pots OOP? Say I flat that TT hand SB vs BB and two times out of three flops - there will be an overcard to my pair. Say board is K92 or Q55 - and I got no initiative as well, so I can't really donk (well, I can - but you know... is that really an option?) So I check, BB in position as PFR in 3bet pots - will always cbet on those boards - and it's back to me. I know he's wide so I kinda have to call and evaluate the turn. On the other hand - I'm still OOP and pot gets bigger and bigger for my underpair - isn't it better to check/fold instead?
If I check/fold - I feel I wasted EV calling pre-flop and waiting for a set or low flop. If I check/call - I feel I'm going deeper in the rabbit's hole and stacks are getting smaller and I might make a costly mistake on the following streets. Those are reasons I try to avoid playing 3bet pots OOP, well, unless I see stats that exploitable easily.
By the way, special shout out to vonki! I still remember watching your session with TwiceT on PartyPoker at 25NL - you gave him no chance to talk, you just knew it all
I remember being really impressed with the video and watched it again later thinking - this girl is great
And look at you now - so good to see former students getting better and becoming coaches themselves! And the world is such a small place after all...
I'm stuck on the same 2NL still though, dammit

Well, I ll try to give a rough / short approach to that.
Assuming we know what is Villain's 3bet range we should know which hands and in which frequency we should defend.
(From gto perceptive our fold vs 3bet should be <45% or sth (depending on the size of the 3bet also)... but when villain 3bets tight it doesn't make sense to defend so big portion of our range).
Given the range we defend we simply should defend % in each street in order to keep our frequencies in reasonable values (i.e. we shouldn't fold vs cbet > 40 i.e for a given bet size etc).
Of course this is a first glance of the problem. 1) We should also consider Villain's tendencies (does he really 3 barrel bluff?, does he really pots the turn as a bluff? etc ). 2) We should consider the board (in some boards villain will have more combos of good holdings than us, so we simply might cannot defend the correct frequency). 3) vs tough opponents we may need to construct our calling range in such a way to include nutted hands (i.e. we flat AA some times etc).
Day 07 (2015.10.20)
Not sure what affected me - but something clicked in my head the night before. Someone said that "tight is right" - and I'm coming back to it over and over again. It might be some discussions with AlphaVillain or a book that I was reading or the video I watched or most likely - altogether with some of my distant memories. But I just woke up in the morning and had a clear picture of how I should beat those micros. So I've played tighter like 22/18, 3bet dropped to 6%, WTSD dropped to 22% and W$SD is 53% - highest so far. I got River call efficiency almost 2 and overall I felt I'm more in control of what's going on. And even so - I dropped 3-4 stacks in the beginning only to keep grinding calmly and bounce back. Also played some Spin & Go's, also getting better at it. So here are the results.

The problem is of course - I saw people limping AA UTG, but they either re-raise preflop or shoving any flop. So in this case when I hit top pair on a drawy board and I get min-raised - I thought he have a lot of draws in his range as well, plus some overpairs and underpairs, and Jx, and other hits... well, wide unreadable range, if you ask me. I might be wrong at that. But on the turn he bets big - and at this point it's either push or fold... FOLD... FOLD, JAY! Oh, I shoved... still thought he might have them flush draws a lot...

I think the key in this hand is to consider that fish raises in multi way pot.
If it was heads up it would be a different story.
But I don't think they do this with draws multi way. Probably he has some nuts but afraid of pushing people out of the pot.
And on the turn he bets huge cause afraid of the 2 flushes. Also 6h not good cause completes some straights / 2 pairs.
*also utg limp range for some villains not so weak.
Having all that said, I don't think is a big deal to put the money in here. Fish is fish and they do random stuff... and top pair vs fish prolly the nuts, right ? Overall win rate shouldn't be affected huge by these spots (depending on the amount of fish)
... but multiway pot, hm:f_o: , does he really min raise to bet close to pot with flush draws?
*some info of villain might would help. is he aggro? is he wide when limps utg?

asimos, your recent posts are so puzzling, man! They really confuse me a lot. So many "buts" and "if" - are you sure you are sure you know what would you do? Or it's random?
As of the UTG - 2 hands, one fold and one this.
vonki, thanks, but - that's part of the challenge! Gotta do what you gotta do - that's the way I learn, by punishing myself

Some times physicists' thoughts can be confusing, isn't it? :f_cool:.
For the record, in first paragraph I wrote my opinion regarding the hand. And the key in my opinion is fish raising multi way pot is not usually draw.
On second paragraph I just wanted to say that if you didn't fold I don't consider that huge mistake and that shouldn't affect your overall win rate a lot. It is kind of rare spot + you are not always wrong. Hope now things are clearer :):f_drink:

Yea, TT and JJ are pretty can often feel rather hard to defend, esp OOP.
But just think of it in a way that, TT is strong enough to defend, but not strong enough to 4b for value. So it's pretty much a bluffcatcher. A.k.a we're going to play it quite carefully.
Opponents 3b range is probably something like JJ-AA, AJ+ and then some stuff like Axs or Kxs, could also be something like KQ, could be J7s. This is where all the "if"'s appear. Because it depends a bit on what type of hands our opponents chose to 3b. How do you know? Well, you can look at his fold to 4b. If he folds A LOT to 4b (being in the 65+ range), we can assume he has a few valuecombos and then bluffcombos. We can also look at his postflop tendencies. Does he barrel turns a lot? if not, we can also assume he has a rather weak range and it gets easier to defend because if he has a 30% turn cbet (obv we need a bit of a sample here) and now bets flop AND turn, we can rest assured our TT isn't going to be defendable anymore from the turn on. If he checks back we're going to showdown quite often.
Another thing to consider is that we're not going to call on all flops. If the flop is KQx, just c/f. If it's Kxx or Axx or Qxx, c/c and re-evaluate turn. A general guideline is that if there's 2 overcards to the TT's, it hits his range too hard for you to defend the flop. One overcard he'll probably cbet with most air hands, but it hits less of his range since broadway cards are a big part of his range. On a lower board like 982 for example we have advantage because his broadways didn't hit. So this flop we're always going to defend.
Hope that makes sense.
GL!
hand 21: I think you played it fine. Not thrilled about it but I think we have to call with 2 pair.
hand 20: Imo you should check KQ since you have some show down value, and bluff other worse holdings of your range.
... and with your sizings is kind of asking to be called from Ahigh, isn't it?

Yes it does, thank you. And it also clear to me that if he has a high fold to 4bet - there's no point to 4bet with TT, it's more profitable to call and bluff catch on good boards.

So many times I've learned that check/calling 3 streets is burning money most of the time. Even with top pairs. But still can't fold sometimes. In a 3bet pot with 2nd pair vs guy who is extremely aggressive but not on the turn and river - I did find a fold. Pat-pat-pat.
Hand #24 - I think I played it well - 0.55$ goes to asimos
Solution recap - not really a value raise on the flop, it's better to take a passive line and check/call, realizing my equity.

So I flat J9s 3-way - not sure if that's the best way to earn money but I felt it might be a +EV spot. I hit really good with 2nd pair and a flush draw and decided to check/raise. I think I should've raised even bigger - but this is enough to set up a river shove I think. He calls and shoves over my turn bet. Pot odds are around 25% and with any decent range I put him on - I get more than 30% equity. So I think it's a call.
Do you think I made a mistake by calling? Maybe preflop or flop play was wrong? Let me know and get your share of my bankroll!
Sport
No! I just couldn't do anything really. I today I still feel like a broken puppet. Never again I'm gonna do a work-out before playing basketball!
Music
But at least I've played guitar for almost an hour. Practiced Caprices a little more and went further with #11 - but I'll have to stop there I think, it's impossible to play on my guitar. I was thinking to record something, maybe next week when all my muscles are back from the AWOL.
Have a good one everybody,
Jay is out.
Hey guys! Website is up again so here they are - videos! Yesterday night I just thought it might be nice to record couple of videos of me playing and re-watch it later. And maybe some of you might watch it too. They are short, 18 minutes each, although I wanted to make it just 15 minutes. Will do it next time. I will also do a better job with the voice next time - it was late and hush, so the voice level is really low. Gonna tune the mic up and speak louder I guess.
Anyways, here they are - check out this page. And let me know if it's fine or I should upload it to YouTube or something?
Hand 24
preflop: if the bb is not a crazy 3betor or sth call with this holding and odds is fine imo.
postflop: Yes, your hand is very strong now
on the flop. But can't see what you accomplish by check-raising. 1) does he call with worse? well he might some times but those combos are very low number (almost no other flush draws out there and you block some of straight draws as well) 2) does he fold better? I doubt he folds Qx or better*. So you don't raise for value and your raise is not a bluff either, imo is a bad raise.
* you might make him fold only some better Jx, but you can achieve that by bluffing on a later street (he doesn't prolly bet 2ice with those). In any way, that alone is not strong enough reason to raise.
I would check-call 2ice unimproved and decide river.
** I ll watch some of your vids in some instance. Keep the good work and you will be improving rapidly
