I think this is impossible to answer without knowing what stakes are you playing and how much do you have experience. If you are just beginning your poker career and starting at NL2 I would say $20 is enough.

If you are new to poker simply sign up for one of the free bankroll offers on pokerstrategy, and start playing the smallest limit they have available. spend twice as much time studying and thinking about your play, as you do playing this is very good advice!

If you want to player with a larger bankroll and can afford to deposit more money, then as others have said i'd reccomend no more than what you can save in half a month. Poker is a game full of variance (for winning players even) and while you are learning you want to keep your outlay as small as possible!
