My wife leaves for a 10-day trip after work today.
She'll be taking my son and grandson as well.
I'll get to eat all the foods they hate

Blutwurst![1] (I've already purchased it)
Green beans
Beetroot
and more as I think of 'em
[1] At least I think that it the correct German term for black pudding aka blood sausage, although the recipes are likely quite different.

It is indeed correct.
For blood sausage, at least.
If we insist on having a distinct term for black pudding, the German Wikipedia page lists a translation which would literally mean "blood pudding", which... honestly sounds pretty gross and gruesome...
I think I'd rather use the English term when referring to it in German.
Pre competition meal
What do I eat before competitions? Flapjacks oatmeal bars. Never forget about the cocoa! Cold almond milk and 2 teaspoons of Nesquick chocolate powder.
I haven't heard "flapjacks" in years. Nice. Brings back many memories.
Mrs Vorpal left this morning at 01:00 with my son and grandson. They had a 6 hour drive to the town where my other grandkids live. They were planning to stop a couple of times on the way and arrive at around 08:00, but they were there at 06:30 -- wow!
They even had to go slow due to rain, fog and smoke.
Their destination is somewhere inside the dense smoke region shown by the red ellipse:

we have now dropped below 14 hours daylight -- and it is only a month before the beginning of autumn
Sandwich Break (ft. Subway)
I've had some takeout from Subway the other day, when I was away on a shopping trip for some home improvement supplies, including a new ceiling lamp, which we'll probably get to next week as well, and some mosquito net for my balcony door, which doesn't close very well from the outside, but happens to lead right into my bedroom, where I have no tolerance at all for bugs and insects.
The sandwich I got was a chicken fajita one, since that was the special for the day. Topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, olives and jalapeños. My sauce of choice was chipotle southwest, bread was cheese oregano.

Good stuff as always, and now I have something to directly compare against when I make my own sandwich creations. Maybe I'll make one tomorrow, but very likely some time next week, at least.
I used to like their sandwiches.
I haven't had one in ages. I just never think of them.
I went to the local fair yesterday.
What a sorry, sad shadow of what it once was.
There was once 3 or more buildings of vendors selling their fantastic little gimmicky inventions.
Now I guess they all do it on Facebook.
There was one building -- half empty -- of same-old-same-old stuff.
But I had some perogies and sausage for lunch at Hunky Bill's -- something I've done every time I've been at the fair since I was a kid (hint: that is a while)
I had some chicken at Henry's -- a more recent tradition, but for fair food it is more than fair.
I managed to avoid all the sweet crap that is usual in fairs, but did succumb at one point to trying a "butterbeer" ice cream.
(it was butterscotch)

My salami sandwich looked like it needed something, so I added a slice of real cheddar. NiftyWould have loved to see a picture.

Here is an identical one...

Nice one, Vorpal!
Is the bread untoasted, though?
There will probably be another Sandwich Break for me on Wednesday. Tomorrow is No Meat Tuesday, and I plan to make those fake chicken tortilla wraps with my homemade ranch dressing again, which I've made many times before, so no need for pictures.

Yes, if I want a toasted sandwich (which is rare) I would sear the meat and cheese too.
We once had a device that you could use to do the whole sandwich at once.
It was hinged and had two flat plates that got hot.
