No further discussion, as you said, just be aware that you are not alone.

These last two years have often been a challenge for sure, but there is still a lot to be grateful for.

And it looks like you're doing a lot better by now, which is great news. :f_love:

"You know what, Harrier?"

Prim and I are still having fun playing Golf With Your Friends on Steam, even though we didn't do any other formal Troll Challenges with it. We are slowly starting to get acquainted with the courses, but even after re-playing some of them, we still have to think quite a bit about how to tackle some of the more complicated ones.

Inevitably, in those situations, Prim will spend a few moments carefully considering her options and then cheerfully exclaim "you know what, Harrier?". For the first few times, I was anticipating her clever new approach, until I figured out that her idea in those situations is always to just blast the ball away at full force so it lands somewhere in the wilderness. :mdr:

Sometimes I'm in the middle of playing my shot as I hear "you know what, Harrier?" and catch glimpses of her ball soaring across the sky. :f_biggrin:

It "works" several times in a row too. Prim might go "you know what, Harrier?" and blast the ball into the bushes. Okay, so that didn't work, what now? Deep thoughts, careful contemplation... "you know what, Harrier?" - and the ball flies right into the bushes again. :f_ugly:

I'm starting to have second thoughts about taking her out to play real life miniature golf... :f_biggrin: But I'd still love to do it if we get a chance next year. I just need to know to duck for cover and order some new golf balls in advance whenever I hear "you know what, Harrier?". I can imagine that this is what I'm now going to hear before any of her pot size bets in poker too. "hmmmm... maybe I should fold this one, or could I possibly have the implied odds for a close call here? you know what, Harrier?..."

Live Challenge following tomorrow. :f_love: No golfing will be involved. :f_wink:

Another extremely enjoyable Troll meetup! :f_love: You guys know what that means, it was time for another Live Challenge. :f_grin:

Last month, we enjoyed some Chinese food and then went on to play Chinese games for our challenge. This time, it was about one week before Prim's birthday, and she wished for some sushi for lunch - which I was certainly on board with, being a bit of a sushi lover myself. I thought we might as well choose another theme that fits with the food we had:

Live Challenge No. 02 - Yakuza!

Yes, time for some Japanese games - more specifically some gambling games that are associated with the Japanese underworld. There were up to three games in today's lineup, but see for yourself:

Round One: Koi-Koi

Koi-Koi is a card game played with hanafuda, Japanese flower cards. I've been talking about this game and these cards a few times before on the forum. There are 48 cards in a deck depicting 12 different flowers or plants, one for each month of the year. Each flower has four different cards to it, which may depict ribbons, animals or other special objects, as well as a bunch of empty "junk cards". The goal is to capture cards by matching cards from your hand or the draw pile with cards on the board, and then form combinations with your captured cards, like five ribbons, ten junk cards, or certain special combinations which are often worth more points.

We played four rounds. I ended up winning one round with a big hand, while Prim won the other three with smaller hands. The result: We were completely tied, the combined value of Prim's hands was exactly the same as the one from the single hand I had. No winner!

You can see the hand I had in the picture below, it was a "Sanko", a combination of three "light" cards, of which there are only five in the game. They have been arranged on the top row in the picture.

Round Two: Oicho-Kabu

This was a last minute addition and I already had plans for a different game, because until yesterday, I actually did not own a deck of Kabufuda, which are the cards that are used to play this game. I ordered one about a month ago from Japan and they happened to arrive just in time for the challenge. We technically could have used hanafuda or even Western playing cards with a stripped deck, but it just wouldn't have been the same.

The cards are more simple than hanafuda, they just include numbers from 1 to 10, 10 being a facecard, and each card is included four times, without different suits, for 40 cards in total. The game Oicho-Kabu is a lot like baccarat. Four different hands are dealt on the board, players pick one or more to bet on, and try to get as close to 9 as possible with the combined value of the cards from the hands they have chosen. Only the last digit counts, so if you have a 6 and a 7, for example, which would add up to 13, it counts as a 3. The hands that were chosen by the players are then compared to the dealer's hand, and either win or lose (we agreed that a tie results in a loss for the player rather than a push - both rules are possible). Each hand contains either two or three cards, and bets are made with only one card revealed.

Interestingly, the very name "yakuza" is supposed to be derived from this game. It refers to one version of the worst possible hand, an 8, 9 and 3, adding up to 20 which counts as zero. 8, 9 and 3 are phonetically expressed as "ya, ku, sa" in Japanese in this context.

Each Troll got three dealer turns with a maximum bet of 10 points per hand. Prim ended up exactly breaking even, while I had some small gains, I think it was three points, giving me the win for the round.

And I just have to mention the story about the hand above... I was betting on one hand which ended up being an 8, and another which ended up being a 3. Prim was the dealer and started out with two sixes, for a combined value of 2 with one card to go. I knew that my 3 was almost certainly busted, especially with two tens being dead, while my 8 still had a good chance. Prim draws her decisive third and final card and the tension mounts... and then she turns over one of the two remaining miracle tens allowing me to scoop, only for her to nonchalantly explain: "This is a ten, which means zero, so it doesn't count. The next draw is..."

You can imagine my reaction and the aghast face I made... :mdr: Imagine playing live Hold'em and desperately hoping for an ace on the river, and then having the dealer say: "River is an ace, but aces don't count, so the real river is..." :f_ugly: Prim wasn't trying to cheat, she honestly thought that tens are an automatic redraw because they have no face value in this game - and that's what made this so hilarious, because it made her act so casual about it, like it's the most normal thing in the world. :f_biggrin:

Round Three: Chinchirorin

Also known as Cee-lo in the West, and technically not a Japanese game, I believe. A better fit for the Yakuza theme would have been Cho-han, but that one is pretty boring, since it just involves rolling two dice and betting on whether the outcome will be odd or even. Still, Chinchirorin is sometimes associated with the Yakuza as well, so I thought it works for our final round.

In this game, you are rolling three dice in a cup. 1-2-3 is an automatic loss, 4-5-6 or trips of any kind are an automatic win. If two of your dice show the same number, then the third die that shows a different value counts as your roll (4-4-6 counts as a 6, 5-5-3 counts as a 3, and so on). Any other outcome results in a re-roll. Once you got a valid roll, or after three unsuccessful attempts, it's your opponent's turn, who will try to beat your roll.

Each Troll got four turns as the "dealer", who goes first. Luck was on my side, so Prim found herself forced to put in a big bet trying to turn the tables. Unfortunately, it didn't work out, so she had to go for an emergency all-in - which was also unsuccessful. Very unlucky, but it left Harrier as the winner of today's luck-heavy Live Challenge.

Spoiler

Prim did well with the hanafuda - of which she now owns a top quality deck herself as another early birthday gift. :f_wink: The other games were pure gambling, so there's nothing to feel bad about. And tomorrow... it's time for another poker challenge! :f_drink: Welcome back, grindette!

Honorable Mention

Prim may have lost today's Live Challenge, but we played some We Cheer on my Wii later on (one heck of an admission...), and she won in our casual duel there. :f_grin:

Not part of our Troll Challenge, but credit where credit is due. :f_thumbsup:

It was exactly THIS face, by the way. :sifflote:

No Troll Challenge thread would be complete without nsavov stepping in. :f_love:

We already had another idea for our Saturday challenge: This time, we would play both the PLO8 and the Courchevel at the same time, and the winner is whoever makes the most profit in both. Equal profit means a tie. As many rebuys as possible are allowed, but it will mean that you will have more ground to make up.

Not sure if that's how we will always do it in the future, but it's what we tried today. I did not do very well in Courchevel early on at all, and I really should have known better - didn't really bring my A-game when it comes to poker in general today. This meant one early rebuy, already giving me an uphill battle.

PLO8 went a little better, and Prim and I even shared a table at the very beginning. I amassed a good stack, and it looked good for at least ITM, but it wasn't quite enough in the end. I eventually pushed preflop with a good hi only hand, and got 75% equity against my caller who had a weaker hi only hand, but managed to hit a two-pair anyway to bust me out. By that time, I also busted out for the 2nd time in Courchevel and decided not to rebuy, which meant that Prim already had the victory in this challenge locked up. :f_thumbsup:

She wasn't done yet, though. Prim got a good stack in PLO8 herself, and managed get a mincash out of it - not bad! :f_grin: She did well in Courchevel too, but couldn't quite make it ITM there.

Nice comeback into the world of poker by Primrose, and we surely haven't seen the last of her yet. A well-deserved victory in today's Troll Challenge.

That was finally a little encouraging result here and this Courchevel is not bad. Funny little game. _biggrin:

She was crushing PLO8:

And Megan, already at her first day in her new home, did a great job at Courchevel!!

Who is Megan?! _biggrin:

You will know! Soon .... _cool:_biggrin:

I cashed the only courchevel tournament I ever played.
courchevel hi/lo is another matter, but I've done OK in that as well.

Having the window card makes a big difference -- and the 5th card is just lovely.

If the trend continues, we will 6-handed 7-card poker with two cards of the flop revealed early.

Just sayin'

Ah, yes, just for clarification, the Courchevel we're playing is hi-lo too. I failed to mention that.

Sunday HORSE Race

More of a crawl than a race, really. Prim couldn't pick up a playable hand if her life depended on it during her first bullet, forcing her into an early rebuy. I wasn't exactly running hot either, but at least managed to pick up a few pots. It was all for naught in the end anyway when I got QQ in the FL Hold'em part (still my least favorite part by a wide margin) and ran into KK. I wasn't out, but severely crippled - and Prim had a stack of a similarly tiny size by now on her 2nd bullet.

At that point, it was all a matter of who gets a bad runout first, as we were both a few big blinds away from busting out. It turned out to be me, with a 532 in Razz that caught nothing but pairs and high cards. I could have taken a late rebuy, but didn't really want to play anymore, so I let Prim have the win in the challenge. She couldn't get much more going either with her super short stack, of course.

Spoiler

It seemed like both trolls got out of bed on the wrong side today in general, for some reason, after an otherwise very enjoyable weekend. I guess you just have some of those days every now and then, which of course won't help at the tables either.

Next week will be better for sure, and we may even have another cooking challenge in store. :f_love: Stay tuned.

Cooking Challenge No. 02 - Use It!

As I mentioned, Prim and I had some takeout sushi during our lovely meetup last Friday. We were a bit early, though, so we had to wait a while until the sushi shop was open, which means that we had some free time in that neighboring town. Among other things, we decided to stop at the Asian grocery store next door, mostly just to browse, but we did end up buying some things. This is what today's cooking challenge is about, we gotta use that stuff up. Oh, and it's our vegetarian day.

Rules for passing the challenge:
- We must use at least one item we bought at that store
- The meal must be vegetarian
- We must enjoy the meal we made
- The other Troll must approve

Here's what I bought: One can of fake chicken and one can of fake duck. I decided to make one of them today and serve it with rice, plain and simple. I chose the duck.

Normally, those meat supplements don't smell very well, and I expected the same thing here. Surprisingly, though, the smell was quite pleasant straight out of the can.

As I began cooking, the smell got a little worse, though. I believe it resembled dog food...

This is the final meal. After the first few bites, I thought that it was okay-ish, but nothing great. I later added some hoisin sauce to spice it up a little. As I continued eating, however, it got worse and worse until I thought it was positively disgusting. I wouldn't even be surprised if they just took a can of dog food and put another sticker on it. I managed to eat it all, but it wasn't pretty.

So whether Prim approves or not, I did not pass the challenge - the meal was kinda gross.

I hope the fake chicken will be better, but I have my doubts...

Mock duck: "You stupid duck -- you're nothing but a quack!"

Mock duck is right, because this meal made a mockery of what duck is supposed to be like.

Prim's meal should be coming up soon, she is currently busy kicking some hind parts at tennis practice.
