My Blog

had a crazy sunday - first 2000 hands had a nice plus and ran up to ~106$ - went back to the tables once more and from there within 100 hands that were ev wise about breakeven went down i think about 10 stacks. this have to admit tilted me and for another 500-1000 hands i played pretty badly. watching the people make horrible plays and hitting everything kept me motivated that when i just gain my focus back i can recover my losses. so i kept playing and managed to get back where i started.... When i left the tables already had 50bb for the ggcare package and was hopeful i'd get a cash there aswell, which also happend and got me another ~50$ on top

still got quite a stack for ggcare, so who knows, maybe it will be plus afterall - but for now can say was tough today ♦

This one i marked - basically wondering how stupid was my play here ?
the small donk on the river was kinda to see maybe a cheap showdown if he has a flush or to maybe get a call from j9xx.

Problem in your line is that when you pot turn and bet river small, it really looks like a straight. And river pairs and flushes the board. So theorywise opponent could raise there a lot of his weaker hands.
Blocker bets on the river are very problematic, if they are always thin valuebets and never inducers with strong hands, AND opponents can exploit that. There is also a huge difference whether the river changes the board (and your hand is face up) or not. If river was 2s in this hand, betting 0,14 would be totally different thing than betting 0,14 on Kd.
If we take a step back, have you tried to define a range for opponent? Once he checks back the flop, can we exclude something from his range? Once he calls the turn, can we exclude something from his range? If you do that, you define his river range and can do better thinking process on how to play versus that range.
Sven, you can do it too. Think what hands he would definitely bet on the flop? And what hands he would definitely fold or raise on the turn?
To help you and others, we can divide opponent's range in to three categories: flush draws, straight draws and made hands. And we can define the top and bottom of his range on those categories on the flop and on the turn.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply - kinda confirms my intuiton that it was a bit silly to bet small like so on this specific river card.
i do like these small bets on the river sometimes and it got me some extra value, aswell as cheap showdowns where opponent got "afraid" with the better hand, but in this setting while playing it immediatley felt weird. So thanks again ![]()
Last 2-3 days got into your videos for the lowstakes aswell and learned a lot so triple thanks! ♦
When i started this challange i played completly based on what i learned about hold em and tried to adapt it, but as the BR is going up ofc also brings motivation to actually study some more and ideally learn how to play proper plo.
Didn't think i'd be at this point tbh but this forum really brings me additional motivation to improve.
If Maniac hadn't told me about br challange i probably would've gone broke by now or lost interest.
So big thumbs up ^^

this train of thought mostly activates in bigger pots ♦ but i'd say that its always part of my consideration, even if not formulated out completly - just found it again on video, and while playing this i already felt "weird" and intution alarmbells went off without having a formulated answer why exactly - check fold just felt to weak and to go big here was to scary and i do think both have way more merrit than the small bet i made and its quite likely a leak of mine that i need to fix also in other hands.
Will keep studying and hope in the future i can handle this type of spot more confident.
On another topic - ggcare again safed my day, which feels almost funny by now

This i definetly do a lot aswell - in that regards i do think it is indeed balanced, but i don't think people on plo2 are aware to this extend what i am doing, espacially on gg where you don't have these stats
Gonna continue with day9 of my challange - after studying some today, yesterday i feel i was playing a bit too tight from certain positions so i will try to improve on that end, instead of going up to plo5. first want to see if i can find a few more spots and see how this goes. on later streets i may give up some hands to easy so want to keep this in mind also and fire more when stuff gets checked. not sure how this will turn out, but instead of going up a limit i figured better explore a bit more without risking too much.
Lets see how it goes - live on twitch
I don't know about PLO high-only, but in PLO8, those wee river bets are quite polarized.

On that hand issue in block bet is that its tough to get called even by smaller straight. Plus river is pretty much worst possible card. When villain call pot bet on turn he often has two pair, set or flush draw so on that river we should be just x-f. When villain check flop KT and flopped sets are unlikely. Probably also K3 but KQ, QQ and flushes are still concern. Of course non nutted flushes should not value raise river but might happen as overplay.

agreed, didn't mention in regards of this hand, just in general its something i'd also do with nutted hands from time to time, depending on how the hand was played.
Made a small session with ~1000 hands just now and have a few hands that i'd like to share (better to make a thread in another part of this forum for something like this?) - session went almost exactly breakeven.
this one preflop i call since this guy is quite lose, to give up on the flop directly felt to weak - questionmark is on the turn, as played on river i think i didnt have much of options left. Probably should fold the turn when he barrels again, but cuious what you guys think

hand 2 - i don't know really, i think on that flop i am reasonably happy to get it in.... ? looking at the outcome just call, see turn and on a blank to get agressive woul've been maybe better? When the 10s hits i could've stll gotten out. As played when he sends it against my raise i think there is too many hands where i have enough equity and can't fold anymore.

Hand3 - probably standard - but maybe some1 disagrees?

Hand4 - blocking Q pretty much is reasoning for my play - any thoughts? ♦

Hand5 - similar to hand 3 - don't think there is too much going on, just curious if someone would see this completly diffrently?

In PLO2, you don't need to balance anything. But if you start to go up, it becomes more and more relevant. The sooner you start to think about it (even when you are not actually doing it), the better.
Going live with Day10 of my challange - feel free to tune in here ![]()
Or as decard cain would say - stay a while and listen - btw d2r ladder will start on 28.04! ^^
kept the session short, fiance waiting and am a bit tired - but had a few nice hands and finished two stacks up after just 501 hands
