You mean those ready-made convenience food burgers from the supermarket? I can hardly imagine them being any better than fast food burgers from any big chains - not that McDonald's is all that great to begin with. The chicken sandwiches at KFC are usually pretty good, but I prefer their regular fried chicken buckets when I go there, which is usually only 2-3 times a year.

At the end of the day, I think nothing beats home cooking, or ideally a good barbecue. You can get some amazing burgers at a steakhouse too, of course, if their steaks are a little bit past your budget that day.

I almost never visit fast food places anymore, maybe Subway sometimes still. McDonald's and Burger King, however, are just a terrible value by this point, and obviously, they are not great corporations either. KFC is fine for the occasional treat on special days. What I especially hate is that ordering via some weird touchscreen device instead of talking to real people is now mandatory at many of those places, including the local KFC.

Besides, I found some good copycat recipes for many McDonald's and BK items, so I can just make those whenever I feel an itch for any of those burgers.

Homer likes those supermarket-burgers. But, burgers are defintely for a cheat day or for a cheat meal. :f_biggrin: While I personally try to keep up a restricted-calorie diet, Homer can eat whatever he wants! Still, with OVER 50! Eats whatever he likes (loves actually junk stuff) and barely puts on weight! :wtf: I try to cook healthy meals for both of us, for Homer more calorie-rich meals, while for myself it should be low in calories. :f_biggrin::f_ugly: Either way, burgers are cheat meals for both of us. :f_biggrin::f_ugly:

I should definitely get you some of those steakhouse burgers some time, Prim. :f_grin: They make gluten-free buns, so it's all good.

100 Meter Dash (Speed)
Bronze: 17.6 seconds
Silver: 15.9 seconds
Gold: 14.2 seconds

Olympic Record: 9.63 seconds by Usain Bolt (JAM) at the 2012 London Olympics, August 5th, 2012.
World Record: 9.58 seconds by Usain Bolt (JAM) at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin, August 16th, 2009.

Harrier's time: 13.8 seconds

Oh yes! We finally did it! :f_drink:

Did two attempts today, after arriving a little late and initially having been locked out of the Trollympic stadium. My first attempt finished at 14.5 seconds, which was a minor improvement over my previous time, but still not enough for the Gold. I felt like there was some slowdown towards the end, though, I was sure that this wasn't my best yet.

I tried again, this time with a nice tailwind too. I even changed my lane along the way, which luckily wasn't a problem, with only me running. I decided to simply close my eyes towards the end and just completely focus on running, maybe that wasn't all that safe... but I made it - 13.8 seconds, good enough for Gold, and even sub-14, which was another milestone.

That's it! Gold is now in the bag in all four Trollympic areas, and even if for some reason the swimming Gold badge doesn't count for the stamina part after all, we would have three Golds and a Silver locked up without it anyway. It is over:

Stamina: Gold (DLRG Swimming Gold Badge) - 3 points
Strength: Gold (Medicine Ball Throw) - 3 points
Speed: Gold (100m Dash) - 3 points
Coordination: Gold (Sling Ball Throw) - 3 points

12 points in total, 11 points are required for Gold.

Trollympics 2023 Result: Gold

Full "Medal Table"
3,000 Meter Run (Stamina): Bronze
800 Meter Freestyle (Stamina): Silver
Medicine Ball Throw (Strength): Gold
Standing Long Jump (Strength): Silver
100 Meter Dash (Speed): Gold
25 Meter Freestyle (Speed): Silver
Long Jump (Coordination): Bronze
Sling Ball Throw (Coordination): Gold

Once again, the question is: Are we done? And as usual, the answer is no. :f_grin:

It is true that the Trollympics will enter a break now, with no meetups until late August, but once they are back, I will also keep joining in. Even with 4 out of 4 Golds secured, there is nothing stopping me from competing in the other events too, so I might as well, just for fun. Also possibly in order to practice for next year, when we should see the games of the second Trollympiad - with Primrose possibly joining in too, who knows... :f_wink:

So yes, let's keep showing up and see how many Golds we can collect in the other events too. I may be back with a vengeance in the 3,000 meter run, for example, better use that break to practice a little.

Well, we will be back. :f_grin: But not for a couple of weeks.

The last "Trollympics" meetup should take place some time in mid to late September. The actual badge won't be handed out until early next year, I've been told, possibly in March or so. There is plenty of administrative work to do for the people in charge, with hundreds of thousands of other athletes going for this badge across the country, so there must be loads of paperwork.

I believe there will be some proper ceremony when the badge will be given out, I expect the local newspaper will be there too. And as I mentioned in the opening post, the certificate will surely look good on a CV, especially for a blue-collar worker like me.

What's up, boys and girls? I am on a stay-at-home mini-vacation right now, until Monday. Prim and I will be meeting up tomorrow, and the weather is still nice, chilly and occasionally rainy - just as we love it. :f_love: A little taste of fall already, maybe.

Personally, I didn't get a lot of "summer feeling" this year, though I at least used the time to get all sporty and active again. That was originally the plan for our "Live Challenges" as well, but we couldn't get to any outdoor sports together due to Primrose's unfortunate injury. :f_frown: Ah well, let's just save those challenges up for next year's meetups. And I have heard that Prim's leg is already getting better. :f_grin:

With the weather being so chilly and Prim still recovering from her injury, I expect tomorrow's meetup will mostly have us relaxing indoors too. We plan to go swimming again, have a nice dinner, and then probably do some gaming... maybe we will do a quick challenge about that, just for fun. :f_grin: I also still have plenty of Frangelico at home, in case we want to take another shot at the classic Super Mario Land drinking game, which we haven't done in a while.

Speaking of drinks, you may have noticed that I now have a sig here, with a convenient link to all the drinks I have posted about on my blog over the years. Feel free to have a look if this is your thing, especially if you haven't been following since 2020, which is when I posted those drinks more actively.

I also already have ideas for further sporting challenges later this year... but let's get to them another time.

This week's Troll Trivia should be solved tomorrow night, whether we have any guesses or not. As always, we hope that everything is still all right with our friend Saffo.

In July 2012, Harrier was working hard to finish a term paper for his university course on time, about multiculturalism in New York City. When it was finally time to submit it, Harrier...

1) woke up in a city that doesn't sleep
2) found he's king of the hill, top of the heap
3) had to make a brand new start of it

Than I would go for option 1. That seems like the most logic option.

to reply to a post read some time ago, my favorite trivia is the match degenerated into a brawl, when you stripped naked and ran in the middle of the field, i still smile.
the hamburger that I prefer in general must be abundant in everything, every time I bite it the seasoning must come out from all sides, for me where you have respected my rule of abundance it is what I would taste. which one I prefer I don't remember exactly I should look at them all, they weren't a few. friends often tell me I'm a good fork

Ah, yes, the "Zulu". :f_biggrin: It was a common ritual, at least in my regional league, to do a naked run around the pitch after you score your first try. You are allowed to keep your shoes on, and your socks too, though it is expected that you at least pull them down to about ankle level. The rest of your clothing has to go. Some players were (perhaps understandably) a little squeamish about this ritual when it was their turn to do it, but I always considered it an honor.

In fact, I did it twice. I was later playing for another club (I expect we will have at least one more Troll Trivia question about that chapter), and scored my first try for them in 2018. That still counts as my first try for that club, so of course I did my Zulu again. :f_grin: I think this was the game where I just finished my naked lap around the pitch with some other players, threw myself onto the ground as I was showered with beer by my cheering and hollering teammates, and meanwhile overheard a woman in the audience muttering "not my kind of sport...". :f_ugly:

I will try to get inspired for some more burger versions over the weekend, and Primrose wants to do some African cooking soon to wrap up the summer... maybe this is where our "World Tour" may lead us soon too, though I also have other ideas.

By the way, guys... I'm still struggling to come up with good ideas for an Australian-inspired burger. I think it should be definitely included in the series, but even after looking up Australian dishes several times, I couldn't come up with anything good. Any ideas?

To wrap up today's live meetup real quick, we were taking it easy today, as expected. We went swimming, to the same location where we went a while ago to do my Gold badge exam, but this time without any pressure. I actually asked one of the pool attendants about upcoming lifeguard courses during my stay, and it turned out that he was currently doing the theory exam of a little girl who was going for her Silver badge - just like I did 1-2 months ago.

Then we went out for an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet, which turned out to be just the right thing for the grindette. :f_grin: I noticed she didn't bother with the appetizers this time and went straight for the meat buffet. It was great, except for the fact that any kind of duck dishes seemed to be inexplicably missing from the otherwise well-stocked and plentiful buffet this time, and also for the fact that we had to take three laps around the restaurant before we could find a proper parking space.

After that, when we got home, it was mostly gaming and chilling. I even learned some useful Hungarian phrases from Primrose... so useful that they almost certainly violate the forum principles and shouldn't be repeated here. We also tried the "new" (as in having been released nine years ago - that's new by my standards) Mario Kart 8 for the first time together, and it seemed to be an instant favorite for Prim. She and her baby princesses didn't do too bad. :f_thumbsup:

For our "challenge", we played a round of the "London Party" mode of the Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics Wii game - which I actually did get close to release back then, a bit of an oddity in my case. It involves your characters of choice going on a quest to collect stickers, which are earned by playing mini games while walking around a virtual version of London, and also by competing in the Olympic events featured in the game.

I picked Bowser Jr, the Trolls' new favorite character, while she played as Daisy, one of her personal favorites who even currently serves as her avatar pic around here.

This game mode can involve a lot of trolling... like being forced to switch your sticker sheet when you were close to completion, or participating in quiz games where you need to answer trivia questions as quickly as possible which are slowly revealed one word at a time... and may go like "True or False: Athletes in the 800 meters event are running clockwise... whoopsie, I meant counter-clockwise". :f_ugly:

Prim doesn't usually like this kind of trolling in her games very much, but she seemed to be enjoying herself. It was me and Bowser Jr. who collected our final 32nd sticker first, though.

Solid 2nd place for Prim and Daisy, ahead of our two CPU opponents who had to share 3rd place. :f_thumbsup:

For me, though, like in the Trollympics, only Gold was barely good enough.

I don't think we will consider this an "official" Troll challenge, however. We were just messing around and taking it easy that day, after all. :f_grin:

Our next meet-up is planned to be in Frankfurt, visiting the beautiful Palmengarten again. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we can do proper Live Challenges again, which wasn't possible last time.

Solution:

Spoiler

1) woke up in a city that doesn't sleep

It was not an unusual situation for me by that point, but I was quite a bit behind as I was typing up my term paper on the night before my deadline. This time, I at least didn't have to do an all-nighter, though I went to bed a little late after finishing the paper. I remember listening to the above song as I was writing in order to get me into the mood and keep me going, but little did I know that on the next day, I really would wake up in a city that doesn't sleep - anymore. I overslept pretty badly after all that work the previous night, I think it was already past noon when I woke up. :f_o:

Well, I just caught the next bus to university and tried to find a way to submit it anyway. The lecturer who was in charge of my course had already left by that point and her office was locked, but luckily, I found another lecturer of one of my other courses working in her own office nearby. I explained the situation to her and she kindly agreed to submit it for me. No worries.

I don't remember how the paper was graded, I guess it was one of those "okay-ish" scores, around C or a weak B at best, so I was certainly not "king of the hill/top of the heap" with it, but at least I passed the course and didn't have to "make a brand new start of it".

I remember some much worse situations concerning upcoming deadlines in my university days, including some proper all-nighters where I worked through the night with no sleep at all. The nastiest example probably occurred at another point that year when I had to write the final paper for a literature class, about the portrayal of 19th century London in the novels of Charles Dickens. I had already negotiated an extended deadline before, and one day before I had to submit the paper, I still hadn't written a single word of it and didn't even know the plot of those novels...

Believe it or not... I somehow pulled it of. Skimming through plot summaries and passages from my rudimentary picks of background literature, I played it by ear and devoted most of my day to a desperate attempt to somehow write that paper after all, with minimum time for food and sleep, mostly running on caffeine. I continued working on the day of my deadline, hastily finished the bibliography about an hour before the building of my faculty closed, caught a bus, ran to the office, and submitted the paper in the final minutes. It wasn't very good, of course, but it passed. I then dragged myself to the nearest Mexican bar and got a burrito with chili con carne, still wondering how I pulled off this seemingly impossible feat, but being relieved nonetheless.

Was any of this worth it? Not really, considering that I'm now working as a warehouse laborer almost a decade after getting my degree. But finishing those papers under such harsh conditions was an accomplishment nonetheless, and as Mr Sinatra said... if I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere. At least this could be one way of looking at it.

Congrats to SDK, guessing correctly right off the bat with your first guess in the series. :f_thumbsup:

The little prince of the Koopas is just adorable! :f_love: Yes, I didn´t bother with the hors d´oevres because I noticed that I had anemia - AGAIN! No surprise, didn´t eat much meat during the week and had had a hard 2 hour tennis work-out on Wednesday at really warm and very humid weather. I had lost a lot of salts and minerals and had already noticed some leg cramps on Thursday. Our swimming was great but didn´t help with the mineral deficiency and the anemia. When we got to the Chinese restaurant, I knew: I must do something about it QUICKLY! So, here we go with liver and red meat and salty foods! I also took a small portion of fries and Harrier noticed HOW MUCH SALT I put on my fries! :f_o: Harrier, believe me: I really needed it!!

By the way: Today I had ham for brekkie and African "Poulet Yassa" for lunch (yummy, more about it later). My body is craving meat and salty, spicy foods!!!! :f_biggrin:

Pretty cool that your bro is a chef. The Trolls like to experiment with new food as well, and Primrose in particular is passionate about cooking. That's one of the reasons why we started the "Recipe Raiders" series this year, and I think Primrose will have something to contribute soon enough. I'm sure looking forward to the pictures of her Poulet Yassa.

So far, all I could think of for an Australia-inspired burger would be prawns, but we need more than that... at least a fitting sauce and maybe some variation on the meat, a decent seasoning would already be enough. Ideally some veggies too.

This recipe just gave me an idea for the patties... but I didn't plan Australia to be the next stop on our tour yet anyway.

Then it was definitely a good decision to go to that all-you-can-eat buffet, where you could take care of your immediate needs right away without having to wait until your food is done.

We will keep this restaurant in mind for future meetups, it's quite a bit away from my place, but not not too far away from the pool where we went swimming, which we will also probably visit a few more times.

I know you don't usually like hyenas too much, but now that you mention the story with the salt (and of course the meat) again, I had to think of the hyena from this commercial. :f_biggrin:
