Clutch...

Tonight's MTT session left me wondering whether I really received such a huge streak of unplayable hands in PLO8, or whether I am just that much of a nit. I kind of missed the Stud Hi, at least I didn't want to reg that late anymore, and Badugi only scored a minimal bounty - we shouldn't ever stoop so low that we consider this a success.

There was also a Stud Hi-Lo SNG running, and it came down to a very dramatic bubble where almost every player seemed to be on the brink of busting out several times. This time, it looked like I would be the next in line for that, so this low pair had to do, at least after the player with the ace folded:

PokerStars, $1.76 + $0.24 - 7 Stud H/L Limit - 375/750 (150 ante) - 4 players
Hand delivered by CardsChat

Seat 8: 3,110 (4 bb)
Seat 2 (Hero): 1,420 (2 bb)
Seat 3: 2,717 (4 bb)
Seat 5: 4,753 (6 bb)

Third Street: (600) Hero is in Seat 2
Xx Xx 2 BI bring-in 225____BI raises to 1,500
Xx Xx A UTG folds
2 4 4 Hero raises to 750____Hero calls 520 (all-in)
Xx Xx 9 BTN folds

Fourth Street: (3,140) (2 players, 1 all-in)
2 4 4 J - Seat 2 (Hero)
Q Q 2 A - Seat 5

Fifth Street: (3,140) (2 players, 1 all-in)
2 4 4 J 4 - Seat 2 (Hero)
Q Q 2 A 7 - Seat 5

Sixth Street: (3,140) (2 players, 1 all-in)
2 4 4 J 4 6 - Seat 2 (Hero)
Q Q 2 A 7 Q - Seat 5

Seventh Street: (3,140) (2 players, 1 all-in)
2 4 4 J 4 6 A - Seat 2 (Hero)
Q Q 2 A 7 Q 6 - Seat 5

Total pot: 3,140

Showdown:
Seat 5 shows Q Q 2 A 7 Q 6 (HI: three of a kind, Queens)
Seat 2 (Hero) shows 2 4 4 J 4 6 A (HI: a flush, Ace high)
Seat 2 (Hero) wins 3,140

Did you see all of that? Running into a higher concealed pair on 3rd, spiking trips on 5th, immediately running into higher trips on 6th, and then finally getting a miracle flush on 7th - which thankfully did not run into a full house or quads. It looked even more dramatic in real time.

I ended up finishing in 2nd place, which may not have been a session saver, but at least a slight confidence boost, maybe. Stud8 is one of the games that I would like to include in my Saturday evening MTT/satty grind, so it's good to get some practice.

Other takeaways of the evening are that 1.) chess puzzles can indeed be quite addicting, and 2.) it's fun to decompile old flash animations for the lulz:

As expected, I didn't quite make the 46 reps today. I found myself getting quite shaky during the 31st one, and while I may have been able to squeeze out a few more, it was clear at that point that I wouldn't come close to the 46. This week will have to be repeated.

The last time I had to repeat a week, I at least jumped up in the columns, but in this case, 31 reps is barely enough for the lowest column once again. 36 would have been the cutoff point for the next one, and I'm not sure if I could have made it there on my last legs if I had tried. Note that I do those tests on Saturday mornings right after getting up and brushing teeth, before having eaten anything. I might get better results in the afternoon.

I think I will pick the lowest column again, at the risk of not making the 46 reps next Saturday either because the workout was too light. I can add a few extra reps in the final sets of each day, and also maybe try to take shorter breaks in-between sets.

My schedule will therefore remain unchanged from last week's:

Monday
17, 19, 15, 15 and 20+ reps

Wednesday
10, 10, 13, 13, 10, 10, 9 and 25+ reps

Friday
13, 13, 15, 15, 12, 12, 10 and 30+ reps

Only two more weeks until my Silver lifeguard course? :f_eek: Time to get serious!

Leg whip kick back swimming without the arms will still be the most relevant swimming style to practice for that course, I believe. Luckily, it was relatively easy to do, with low traffic at the pool once again. A packed pool in the first week of January followed by light traffic in the following weeks really does look a lot like failed new year's resolutions...

I aimed to do 300 meters of back swimming without the arms, 200 meters will be required as part of the exam - but of course, it is also an important element in transport swimming, which will also involve timed tests. In the end, I went beyond my goal and swam for 400 meters. I once even bumped my head on the edge of the pool. :f_ugly: It didn't bleed, so I guess I'm not fast enough yet.

Speaking of bleeding, I discovered that the smell of blood after my distance diving may just be something I need to get used to, and not a sign of me having done too sudden movements while turning or something. I therefore made another turn after diving for the required 25 meters today, and even managed to make quite a bit of extra distance after that. 10 more meters, maybe? I seemed to be close to the halfway point.

Of course, I'm still working hard on my front crawling for further challenges this summer. I tried to make sure not to go too crazy with my legs this time, and managed to keep going for 16 lanes already before moving on to other stuff, so another 400 meters. For me, that's a good distance. Let's aim for 500 next time, maybe. Trying to crawl for a full kilometer could be a nice goal for the end of the year, but I would at least like to make 800 meters for the "Trollympics" this summer.

There were a few hundred meters more of standard breaststroke swimming, and I also may have added two more lanes of back swimming beyond the 400 meters as punishment for losing track, so I should have easily made a combined distance of 1 km already. I'd say I should be very well prepared for my Silver course.

Prim picked up FOUR cards again ....

Was looking forward to pick up FOUR cards and "da Pot" today and decided to hit the MTT tables on Partypoker. No traffic in CG on Party, unfortunately. Anyways, played a 0,22 $ PLO-PKO Bounty Hunter, a 0,33 $ PLO regular, a 0,16 $ PLO satty for the Winter Grand Prix Series (cool! Party has tournament series again) and two PLO8 tournaments (0,22 $ each). As it goes in PLO, either it´s the big pot or the big frustration. In my case it was both:

0,16 $ satty: card-dead - busto!
0,22 $ PLO Bounty Hunter: Final Table, 6th place
0,33 $ PLO: busto, first lost a huge pot with a flopped nutstr8 (board paired) and then with top set (THE RIVER! ooooh, the river!
0,22 $ PLO8: card-dead and busto!
0,22 $ PLO8 no. 2: First cool hands, scoops and then nothing...busto with middle set (as desperate shortie)

So, it was both: frustrating, busting near ITM after a great start and then just turn and river falling constantly against me, but it was also nice to take the 6th place in the Bounty Hunter with one bounty.

Here are the highlights:

KO the Villain with my straight:

That´s why I despice paired boards:

And a little comeback after that:

In that very tournament I later jammed top set with my 9TT8ss against AAxx and QQxx. River: Q!

A nice scoop in PLO8:

Hand of the day:

Nevertheless, only one ITM is in fact a bit frustrating, but better than nothing.

Interestingly, I indeed follow BRM, got about 33 € on Party and I think if I´m going to set a poker goal, then it will be: 33 € - what can I make of it?
Got about 18 € on 888 as well, but not sure, what I´m going to do there...

So much for that special Saturday grind...

There were still some Stud8 SNGs running, with unusually good traffic, because I did manage to get a second one going about an hour after the first one started. No luck trying to get a third one started, however, I think we got to maybe 5 out of 8 players in the lobby at one point before people started dropping out.

Again, I don't want to hear any complaints from Hold'em players about bad traffic on this or that room because a table takes 10 minutes to fill. :f_ugly: At least I finished 2nd in one of the two SNGs again tonight.

I added what are supposed to be my standard MTTs now, namely Stud and PLO8, as well as Badugi, because it's the weekend. To make it quick, all of them bricked, I really don't know why I still even bother.

Badugi hit a very nice hand here, after drawing two:

(Equity - Pre-Flop: 28%, Flop: 9%, Turn: 13%, River: 0%)

UTG wins 6,110
MP wins 3,840

Overplayed? Probably. By that point, I hardly cared anymore. In general, poker is currently about 20% as fun as doing dishes, while getting 100% less dishes cleaned up.

I think I have some more Stud hands for my next post...

Suited low cards are pretty much dynamite in Stud Hi-Lo. They may still let you down, but it's always nice when you have all the cards you need falling into your lap right away:

Late Gin

It wasn't so easy this time. Normally, it is not very wise to call with a draw to only one half of the pot. It probably wasn't wise here either, but with this being early in the SNG and bet sizes being very small in comparison to the stacks, I gave in to the temptation to chase the low. Imagine if we actually catch that one card that gives us a high hand in addition to that...

No Dice

Stud Hi now, where I even had a decent start, until this hand.

Two pair is often considered the most typical winning hand in Stud. We hit a pretty good one early on, against an opponent who may very well have aces. If so, we may be in good shape against them, at the risk of them hitting a better two pair with aces up, of course. At least their board didn't pair... they don't really have the two pair, do they?

@DonWolfo: Yaaaaaaay! :f_ugly: :f_ugly: :f_ugly: :f_ugly:
However, I didn´t get that message so far. Gladly, I do cash in and out directly via online banking, so, shouldn´t be a big deal, I guess. At least you don´t have to send in zillions of documents. Anyway, it´s a shame how players from Germany get pestered with all that bureaucracy! They really want to destroy online Poker in Germany.

It's a interesting way to learn Russian. I don't think I will ever understand it without subtitles.

You know, just yesterday, Primrose and I were discussing whether we would like to play some tournaments together on PartyPoker in the future. I am still hesitant about that, because Party doesn't offer a lot that interests me, and I know that after opening the client, I will be prohibited from playing on any other licensed room like Pokerstars for a few hours thanks to those regulations.

Knowing that this malarkey is ready to hit us later this year, maybe it's best to just cash out and forget about it.

Mind you, I'm considering calling it quits entirely, because poker has been having a very bad impact on me in general lately, and I don't see things improving. Cashing out the few thousands of dollars I have on Pokerstars, or even a good chunk of it, after working so hard to build them up over the years would be a much bigger step, however. My indecisiveness alone is already preventing me from doing it at the moment.

When I was at school and learnt English and French, we often did some funny sing-alongs. It´s a cool way to learn a language. :f_thumbsup:

Not sure if this was a good idea but .........

..as weather forecast said it would be 11-12°C today and not rainy, Homer and I decided to go on a bicycle tour. We both were dressed for about those forecasted 10-12°C but we realized quickly, that it must be much colder. An icy cold wind was blowing which didn´t make anything easier. We cycled about 2 hours and at the end I couldn´t feel my feet! :f_o: We bought fresh, raw milk on the way and sausages from a local farmers so-called "Regiomat" - kind of a self-service device with different local products. We decided to buy some organic sausages and 3 liters of fresh raw milk (one of the only dairy products I love and have no problems with). Yes, we cycled with 3 big milk bottles home, while just one of them is made of glass (I have those so called "Chilly"-bottles, made of some kind of metal, keeping your beverages either hot or cool). Conclusion: Those 10-12°C forecast must have been "wishful thinking", no way, there were 10-12°C. This was the coldest bicycle tour I have ever made :mdr: and I´m glad that I can feel my hands and feet again. :mdr:

By the way: Today would be a 1.10 $ Winter Grand Prix event in PLO (PKO) on Partypoker, was tempted to play it, but 2 hours 40 minutes late reg??!!!! REALLY? ..

I almost forgot about this week's menu, vegetarian was our motto. I actually made it on Tuesday already, but didn't post about it yet. I believe Prim had her veggie menu today, and intends to post about it tomorrow.

After thinking about it for a while, I decided to just fry some halloumi.

I prepared some onions too. Originally, I wanted to include them raw, but then decided to sauté them along with the halloumi. They probably would have been better raw after all.

I just got some tortillas and put the halloumi in them with the onions and some olives...

...then added some tzatziki - the seasoning mix that Primrose once gave me is still good.

Simple stuff. :f_grin:

That takes care of this week's menu. Next week, we will have...

Spoiler

Again?? :f_eek: I swear we don't handpick them. But we got quite a few repeats already, ever since we started with the series last year.

Well, I could make blinis again, this time with the correct measurements. :f_ugly: That seems cheap, though. Let's find something else...

Lastly, I have teased a new fitness challenge, so here it is:

Similar to my ongoing pushups challenge, we will now try to work our way to a five minute plank. Yes, we - Primrose will join me this time.

I have picked out a training schedule for us that should have us perform the five minute plank within six weeks from now. It's the beginner's plan, there is also an intermediate and an advanced version out there, which give us less time. I wanted to stick to the beginner's plan, though, to make sure that we can do it in combination with our standard sports and workout schedules, including the 100 pushups challenge, which is still ongoing for me. And also to give you guys less of an excuse for not joining us. :f_wink:

I assume everyone is familiar with the plank, it is also explained on the website, in case you're not sure. Primrose actually hates this exercise, and prefers to avoid it during her personal workouts in favor of other drills for the abs. All the more reason to start a challenge about it, I figured. :f_grin:

When I first mentioned the idea to Prim in a Skype call last week, I wanted to find out where I currently stand, so I spontaneously decided to put my laptop on the floor and have her watch me, while keeping count and watching out for good form and all. When it started to get more exhausting, I asked Prim at how many seconds I was now, and she just replied "oh, I don't know... was I supposed to keep track?" :f_ugly: We estimated my current plank to be at a little over a minute, in the end.

This should give us plenty of wiggle room for our first few weeks of the plan, I believe. Our schedule for next week will be:

Monday: 20 seconds
Tuesday: 20 seconds
Wednesday: 30 seconds
Thursday: 30 seconds
Friday: 45 seconds
Saturday: 55 seconds
Sunday: rest day

Should be no problem. Best of luck to both of us, and... yeah, feel free to join in, guys. :f_wink: Go sculpt those abs, together with the Trolls.

Surprise Menu

A bit late for the party, but I had my last weeks veggie surprise menu yesterday for dinner. After that icy cold bike tour mentioned above, I needed a hot soup - and still had some veggie soup (kind of "Borsh"?) frozen down. Just defroze it and used it up. :f_biggrin:

It´s big Mussgo-weeks here, by the way. It´s February and we need to use up all our winter stocks from last year. The freezer must be emptied, the canned food must be eaten - EVERYTHING MUSSGO until spring! :f_biggrin:

Just some info for you guys, you are unlikely to see any poker updates from me for a while. My last few sessions have left a really bad mental impact on me, often even being noticeable for several days, and if this is the price I have to pay, I decided that it is better for me and the people I care about to take a longer break from the game.

I have no idea how long this break will be - it could be a week, could be a month... or maybe this is really it, I don't know, but I need to get away from it for a while before trying again. It's disappointing, especially because I already took a longer break before, and didn't even play all that much since then, but it's really for the best that way, I believe.

It's all right, that's why we decided to do the new blog in this format, so we will have plenty of material even if one of us goes on a poker hiatus. We will still have poker updates from Prim, and the rest will continue as usual.
