2024 Stats

It is finally time for the big 2024 stats wrap-up. :f_grin: We have a lot to get to, but let's start with MTTs.

MTT Stats

Despite needing about half a year to get going, 2024 was a good year at the MTT front. Volume was the lowest it has ever been, but our ROI is well above average, and almost $490 in profit is not bad for such a low amount of games.

Badugi couldn't quite maintain a three figure ROI, but still boasts some very good stats.

Five Card Draw showed some promise earlier on and was the most profitable format for a while, then it collapsed and finished just barely in profit before losing its spot in the grind.

Stud Hi-Lo still suffers from low volume that makes it difficult to gauge where we are really going, but a few good finishes show that there might be some potential in this format.

For the sake of completion, here are some "also-rans" too, with single figure volumes:

None of these games include tournaments that I sattied into, we will get to those later.

As you can tell from the values above already, Badugi ended up being the most profitable format.

December actually ended up being the worst month, with a loss of $36.07. The best month was October, earning us a profit of $296.46.

The worst week was Week 31 (August 5th to August 11th), losing $21.00. Week 42 (October 21st to October 27th) was the best one, with $198.72 in profit.

Here are the overall candlestick graphs:

Badugi needed a while to get going, but then really took off:

Five Card Draw was the opposite:

For Stud8, meanwhile, it's mostly a few very good finishes that are carrying it so far:

There have been some good deep finishes in PKOs too, leading to a slight majority of our PKO profit coming from ITM prizes rather than bounties:

In overall MTTs, the ratio is higher, as expected:

SNG Stats

SNGs will likely not return in 2025, but we played a few games this year, so here are the stats:

For the first time, we had to settle for a loss, though you can tell by the volume that I didn't put up much of a fight in there this year.

Five Card Draw was the key player, mostly because it had the best traffic. Unfortunately, it lost money.

The roller coaster ride that is Courchevel got another brief try, and couldn't get anything going in its few games. It does, however, have the honor of featuring my first poker hand of 2024.

I would have liked to play more Stud8 SNGs, but the player pool had other ideas, it was really hard to get any games running at all. In the few SNGs that did run, however, I actually made a profit, thus turning it into the only SNG format not to finish in the red this year.

We only had one good SNG month, which will be demonstrated more clearly in the candlestick graphs that will follow further below.

First, let's take a look at the overall SNG profit. We had a terrible start into the year, and our brief hope spot in September, when I got more into Five Card Draw in general, didn't last long.

The Five Card Draw charts obviously mirror this trend, with this being our main game:

I don't think the other games even had a volume that made it worthwhile to post a candlestick chart. We will take a look at the line graphs for single games, however:

Taking a look at the bigger picture, here are the single game line graphs for our long-term performance ever since keeping track. Despite our poor results this year, things are still looking good overall, except for Courchevel, which is now breaking even:

We did not play any 8-Game SNGs this year, but those have a long-term graph too:

Here are the finishing positions for our main game. Once again we had an annoyingly high rate of finishing right on the bubble in 3rd place:

This is the progression over time this year:

OFC Stats

I had some high hopes for this game, but the results unfortunately couldn't live up to them. To what degree this was the case is a very nuanced issue this time, as our stats will differ wildly depending on stakes, formats, and other factors.

To clarify a few things, the values I will use below have been adjusted this time so that all USD amounts, even "historic" ones from the previous years, use last night's exchange rate of 1 µBTC being equal to $0.09309427. I figured that this makes a lot more sense than using whatever the closing exchange rate of the year was, as I did previously. The values may therefore differ to the ones I posted at previous points, including last year.

Also note that due to the way I am keeping track of these stats, certain statistics will include "side games" like 2-7 OFC or the Progressive version, while others will only include OFC-P games, which are supposed to be the main game. I realize that it can be confusing, but I will try to clarify whenever necessary.

With that out of the way, here are the overall results (includes side games):

While they look pretty bad, taking a look at the breakdown by stakes once again reveals that our misadventures at higher stakes are to blame (does NOT include side games):

In terms of USD profit (using the current exchange rate for all values), we have been all over the place (does NOT include side games):

For points, it looks a lot better (does NOT include side games):

Taking a look at the individual stakes once again reveals a massive difference (does NOT include side games):

We had one really bad month, and unsurprisingly, it was mostly caused by those few neck-breaking µBTC 2 sessions (includes side games):

The overall candlestick graphs illustrate it further (includes side games):

For points, I even compiled two sets of graphs. These ones include side games:

These ones do not:

You can see two things: 1) We're not doing too bad in terms of points 2) OFC-P is going a little better compared to all of OFC including side games, which contributed a loss.

For additional stats, here is our OFC profit on SwC since keeping track. They probably do not include side games, but I'm not entirely sure. Note, however, that the USD amount will use the exchange rates from the ends of their respective years this time, so the graph will be subject to changes in value for Bitcoin:

Let us also take a look at the combined values for overall OFC since keeping track, which include games on CoinPoker in previous years (they have since been discontinued there). The values probably include "side games" on SwC (which were never available on CoinPoker to begin with):

Finally, let us also check out which weekdays and times of the day worked best or worst for us on SwC this year (includes side games):

Additional Stats

This takes care of the main formats, but there is still more to get to. First of all, we played some satellites, so here are the results:

I like to distinguish between what I call "value profit" (includes the value of won MTT seats) and "realized profit" (only includes the amount of money earned, so successfully won MTT tickets that fail to cash are still counted as a loss). Last year, we finished at a realized loss, but ended up just about breaking even in "value". This year, our numbers are in the black for both accounts, thanks to a decent target MTT run, though our realized profit is still close to break-even.

It was mostly down to this one tournament, which was the $11 Mini Sunday Octopus (8-Game) on October 20th, finishing for a $26.20 payout following our $1.10 satellite entry. Note that these winnings are not included in the already excellent October MTT stats.

Getting back to crypto poker one last time, I also tried a few Drawmaha cash tables, and while I haven't been keeping track of these games to the same degree as the others, I did take note of my profits. Our final Drawmaha profit in 2024 after 52 tables is at 70.87 µBTC, currently corresponding to $6.60. In terms of big blinds, it would be 520.

There have also been a few freeroll winnings, which have not been included and should be negligible anyway.

Lastly, here is the overall breakdown of all game types (except for Drawmaha and other non-OFC games on SwC):

Because most other formats finished at a loss, the share of MTTs within our overall profit technically increases to over 100%:

And as an additional bonus, I finished my last puzzle freebies of the year on Chess.com, and this is my most recent rating:

2024 in Review

Prim and I both talked about some of the things that went wrong and went right, and we have just taken a look at my poker statistics. To wrap things up, I will now also post my very personal account of 2024.

To be honest... my memories of this year are not all that great, all things considered. Sure, we have had some great successes and good moments like always. But when I reflect on it, I realize that I often drove myself quite hard, throughout the whole year. Despite many changes in my activities based on seasons etc, my schedule was often very packed. I have already promised myself to grant me a little more down time next year, not sure if I will end up actually doing it, but I think it would be important.

Primrose and I had some very enjoyable meetups as every year as well, but once again, our schedules made it difficult to find the time in the first few months, and we often had to settle for dates when we couldn't do all the activities that we had planned. We also did no more formal "Troll Challenges" like on the last blog, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing, we can still have fun. Too bad we haven't been able to visit the Palmengarten in Frankfurt this year, however. I hope we can do it again in 2025. :f_grin:

We discussed it in private, and agreed that our favorite meetups were the ones in late summer, when we visited the bathing lake where I now help out as a lifeguard. Our post-birthday meetup in late November ranked highly for both of us too.

In a nutshell, 2024 makes me think of loads of sports and exercising, long summer evenings at the bathing lake, going the extra mile at the pool and the jogging track, and... just not nearly enough time in general for the things you want to do. Yes, it was a very active year for sure. Maybe a little too active at times.

My personal top stories that come to mind will be the subject of my next post, though, I believe.

The first memories of 2024 that stand out to me can be found right here, at the local pool. The decision to go for the next Lifeguard badge, which would officially qualify me for duty, was made quickly, so I spent a lot of time in the first few weeks preparing for it. By the end of winter, this early challenge had been successfully passed:

It was also nice to see some snow around here during this time, something which hasn't been the case this winter yet.

Then there were the many exercise challenges... it all started with those 100 pushups, which were technically started in late 2023 already. I didn't expect to get all that far, but despite taking many more weeks than originally planned, I managed to get there in the end, and kept it up as a habit afterwards. Other challenges includes 200 squats, 200 sit-ups and a Five Minute Plank. Except for the plank, all of these challenges have been aced as well.

Sure, I have been pretty active, but so was the grindette. :f_grin: Following along with her "Troll Open" challenges was another one of my favorite memories of early 2024. More successes to come next year?

Oh dear, extra expenses... Too bad about that laptop battery breaking down, and the less said about my quest to find a replacement, the better. :f_mad: I'm not even all that satisfied with the new laptop that I am currently typing on, but it has to do.

And then the new car... well, at least that one turned out to be a very good purchase. :f_grin:

Remember the Quest for Arnsburg Abbey? Actually one of my favorite memories of the year, it kind of marked the beginning of spring for me. :f_grin:

The biggest run, however, took place right here, in Wallernhausen. Harrier went to participate in a public 10km race as part of the "Trollympics", and finished with an acceptable time of just about one hour, under harsh circumstances. Speaking of which, the Trollympics were finished with Gold once again too:

For Prim, my hometown's public bathing lake was an instant hit too, though it also meant some stressful shifts after work for me. Still, it was definitely something that stood out to me this year.

Also, around that time, we really started establishing our Mario Party drinking game - which turned out to be another instant hit for us. :f_drink: I would probably consider this my "gaming highlight" of 2024.

What else? Oh, Prim turned 50, how could we forget? :f_love: And she's still so young...

For one of my final challenges, I also ended up taking down my yellow belt karate exam.

Finally, for some culinary highlights during our cooking challenges, we would of course have to talk about our Four Seasons series.

A Quattro Staggioni burger? Sure, why not? :f_grin: The individual versions were good too, however.

Or how about some blinis? A lot of effort, but I liked how they turned out.

For something completely different, we even made some African dishes:

Or how about some dessert, like this pecan pie?

Well, there really was a lot to get to. Sporty, culinary, and otherwise.

And now, I am wishing you guys an excellent start into 2025! :f_drink:

HAPPY NEW YEAR everybody!

The new year is starting very stormy here! The New Year´s Eve party at the sea shore yesterday was cancelled due to bad weather and today, Homer and I had to cancel our plan of going for a nice walk by the sea shore! It´s still very stormy and it´s raining cats and dogs, but for the next couple of days, the weather forecast predicts much better conditions. The storm is slowly coming to an end, the weather is going to be cold, but much more calm. :f_biggrin:

Tomorrow, we will have tennis practice (of course! What else?! :f_wink: ) and the rest will pretty much depend on the weather.... :f_biggrin: Anyway, we´re enjoying our vacations here so far, just too bad that the New Year´s Eve party was cancelled....was looking forward to celebrate the new year at the sea shore... we, instead, spent a quiet and easy New Years Eve, with sauna, good food, good wine, etc. Maybe more luck next year? :f_wink:

Our traditional belated New Year's fireworks, starting at 7 PM on January 1st once again, in honor of my father who passed away on New Year's Day 2018 at around that time. I decided to even take a video of the show this year.

I hope everyone had a great start into 2025. :f_drink: While I did enjoy last night a lot, I unfortunately had to spend all day on my poker spreadsheets for 2025, I was hoping to get it wrapped up within a few hours in the afternoon and possibly even play tonight already. As Vorpal likes to say, however, there is "always one more bug", and particularly the fact that 2024 was a leap year has caused me a lot of grief and forced me start over with several things multiple times.

Also, I realized that some of the more advanced SNG stats I posted yesterday relied on some "under the hood" data that had not been updated correctly before I collected the stats. It has been fixed in the new spreadsheet, and yesterday's post has been edited with the new data, which should hopefully be accurate.

As far as I can tell, I should be completely done with the spreadsheets now, so we should be ready to crush. It wasn't pretty, but luckily, this kind of work only has to be done once a year. Ideally, I like to have it done in the week before New Year's Eve already, didn't get to it this time.

Normally, this would be a good moment to talk about our goals, but I think I will save that for tomorrow, I need a break after having worked on those pesky spreadsheets all day long. I can already say that I am feeling quite bullish about 2025 in general, though. :f_grin:

May all your wishes come true this year, my friends. :f_drink:

Oof... well, there is always a lot of "housekeeping" to do when a new year arrives, and this time, it took a little longer than I planned. That last spreadsheet in particular, about my personal finances, almost drove me insane. It all came down to one minus and plus sign being swapped in one forgotten cell buried deep inside the document, and it took me hours to find the mistake.

Everything should now be done for real, I hope. Which is good, because I didn't plan to spend the lion's share of my big winter vacation (which won't last all that much longer... :f_cry:) working on spreadsheets. I already feel an itching to hit the tables at last.

Let's finally set some goals for 2025 now. :f_grin: To get the sporting stuff out of the way first, because I know you guys don't care that much about it, I will of course aim to return to the "Trollympics" (German Sports Badge) and finish with Gold once again. Setting a few new personal records would be nice, but I'll take any Gold I can get. Ideally, however, I would like to get my first Gold in an aquatic event - which shouldn't be too easy, because I have not been all that close to it so far.

While my workout continues offline, and I have plenty of ongoing projects, I will set no goals for the year when it comes to that. However, I will continue to shoot for better times on the jogging track and in the swimming pool. Goals for this year are "Novice" level times (as defined by the posted standards on RunningLevel.com and SwimmingLevel.com) for at least one running and swimming distance each, and more specifically, a sub 1 hour time in a 10K run - it doesn't have to be a public race, it can be any kind of private run too. Participating in another one of those public races would be nice, but it's not a top priority.

Technically, there are also still swimming badges left to take, but I think I have exhausted most realistic options that are available to me. This won't be a goal this year - but this doesn't mean that it won't happen...

Oh, and let's also get through one more karate belt exam. Orange would be the next step.

But now, let's finally get to the stuff you care about: Poker goals. _grin: I have kept building that bankroll in the past... wouldn't it be nice to play for withdrawals again? Of course, I also like to keep my options open, so I like a generous financial cushion in my bankroll. Currently, I have €3,807.32 on Stars. I'd say that if we hit 5K, that definitely would be a moment to stop saving up. Reaching that milestone would require me to make almost €1.2K in profit - is that realistic in 2025? Technically, I'd say it is... but it would require a very good year. Let's just say that reaching 4K means the year was not a failure, 4.5K means it was okay, and 5K is our big goal.

For specific games, I want at least a >50% ROI in Badugi, and at least one more profitable game to grind alongside it on a regular basis, whatever it is. In OFC, should I ever see traffic in there again, I want winning stats at 1 µBTC stakes and a complete recovery of last year's losses. Will Drawmaha also see a breakthrough? Well, I will consider any kind of situation that will make me consider it as a grinding option a success. This relies on not just profit, but also traffic, which is beyond my control.

Those are my goals for 2025. I also have concrete plans for a new burger series on the blog, similar in scope to the Four Seasons series from last year. It will be revealed once it is ready.

Time to beat: 5:00 Minutes
Current PB: 5:06 Minutes

Today's Time: 4:56 Minutes
GOAL REACHED!
NEW PB!

Not bad, we got our sub 5 minutes time already. Still a long way from anything decent, but I managed to shave 10 seconds off my previous time, and I think it's good to celebrate the small victories. I mostly achieved it through being a bit more disciplined during my swim in general, spending less times at the turns, for example. I also may have been a bit more well-rested than last time.

According to the posted standards, I even already moved up a couple of percentiles:

For our next goal, I think I would directly shoot for the "Novice" time of 4:43 minutes. 13 seconds are to lose... well, today I already managed to get rid of 10 seconds compared to last time. Shaking off another 13 seconds should be doable, but must likely not on the next go. Maybe in a few months or so. :f_grin:

First Hand of 2025

Finally something poker related. :f_grin: This is the first poker hand of 2025, for both Primrose and me. Unfortunately, it was as unspectacular as the rest of the tournament. I only won a few small non-showdown pots, and the few times when I did get a hand, I got outdrawn. Not the best start into the new year, I'm afraid.

I don't really think I was in the mood yet anyway. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day for poker.

This is where the Christmas tree used to be. It's gone now, Christmas time is officially wrapped up.

Honestly, it was a bit of a dud for me. Hardly any advent mood at all, thanks to a disappointing local Christmas market and a lot to do in December, and the trend continued during the holidays, where I hit a lot of snags trying to prepare my new spreadsheets, among other things. Still, while my big winter vacation was not quite the worry-free hibernation I was hoping it would be, I had some very refreshing days and did manage to relax a lot.

It will be back to the grind on Wednesday. The daily grind at work, that is. The poker grind was skipped yesterday once again, I guess Saturday's Badugi was not a very motivating factor. I tried to join a Stud Hi-Lo MTT, but it looks like it wasn't running that day.

And all this time, I didn't even get around to posting what I got for Christmas. Well, here it is - I got a brand new wok. :f_grin:

Some people say it won't make much of a difference compared to regular frying pans. Maybe they are right... but I would like to see for myself how my dishes will turn out in one of those.

Some wok dishes this year? I think so. :f_grin:

Stud Hi-Lo was running today, for better or for worse. It felt very similar to Saturday's Badugi, except I did get some good hands at times, like this one:

Seat 5 shows 7 6 6 7 6 A 2 (HI: a full house, Sixes full of Sevens)
Seat 2 wins 2,916
Seat 5 wins 3,108

Yes, I folded rolled-up trips. Results-wise, it turned out that I really was behind, but not in the way that I expected. I was mostly worried about the runouts in the other hands, which not only made a full house or straight possible, but also made it seem like my opponents would keep inflating the pot. I wonder if my fold was a little tight here, again, ignoring the result.

As for the rest, no meaningful showdown was won, except for a split three-way pot, I believe. I decided that I wasn't in the mood for Badugi later on either, though I did eventually find an OFC table later tonight, where I also lost. It is starting to get quite demoralizing, honestly. I mentioned just a few days ago that I was itching to get back to the tables. Well, not a lot of that is left, it is starting to look like a bit of a motivational crisis.

Not a good start into the new year at all, I'm afraid, which isn't helped by the very poor results I had last month.

Back to the Grind...

After a completely botched re-start at the tables, Harrier will now also have to don his steel toe work boots again and return to the daily grind in the warehouse. The big winter vacation is over, and considering that I can only afford to take such a long break once a year, it left a lot to be desired, though it at least provided some much needed relief - December was such a stressful month.

It's okay, we start with only half a week, which should be a breeze, and Primrose will return from her own well-deserved vacation next week too, so we will have each other's backs again. We also plan to meet up in person very soon, getting rid of the last bits of "new year's blues" we might be feeling.

Some pointers for me, for a better winter vacation at the end of this year:

:spade: The week after Christmas will be completely poker-free, no questions asked. It is advisable to start the poker break a few days before Christmas too.
 Spreadsheets and all other kinds of "housekeeping" for the new year should ideally be prepared before Christmas already, not in the days surrounding New Year's Day. This includes collecting poker stats, and that's also one of the reasons why there should be no poker between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
:diamond: If possible, most Christmas preparations should be started in November already, so there is less to be crammed into the final week. Not always easy, because you may have to rely on input from family and relatives regarding certain things like presents.

That being said, another lesson from last year was that I shouldn't have to rely too much on temporary relief during weekends and vacation days, and that I am also supposed to find joy in my day to day life. Last year, it wasn't always easy, but in no small part due to choices I made myself. Let's do better this time, and the less than optimal start will soon be forgotten. Results at the tables will surely improve too.

Home sweet home: I´m back!!

Wow haven´t had such a long vacation in ages! :f_o: But I really needed them. We weren´t particularly lucky when it came to the weather, a very stormy New Years Eve spoiled the party, January 1st was not better but we also had very nice winter weather with snow. :f_love: Gladly, the indoor-tennis court was not far away from the house we had rented and - as already mentioned - the house had a sauna!!! :f_love: :f_love: :f_love: :f_love:

The first week was not so much of a bootcamp, we had tennis training once and just played by ourselves twice. But the second week was indeed tennis bootcamp!! 2 hours of hard tennis practice almost every day - but coach was very happy with the progresses we made!! :f_biggrin: Also this tennis bootcamp was absolutely necessary, the sauna afterwards as well (ouch! :fouet: Tennis training was really hard :fouet: )!!

The perfect way to get physically and mentally fit ... because I got some NEWS for you!

HOT STUFF! Getting ready with the Bowser´s!

Hey guys! Yes, it´s about time to start the new gardening season 2025!!! Yaaaay!!!

So, let´s get ready with family Bowser and start with the HOT STUFF!!!

This year, we got a nice mixture of SUPER HOT STUFF, spicy peppers and not so spicy ones.

The FIERY HOT STUFF!!

Carolina Reaper

This one is from last year, hibernating (the small white droplets you see is the organic pesticide against lice and other unwanted "guests"). Carolina Reaper was once the hottest chili in the world, I think it´s now about the 2nd or 3rd hottest chili: about 2 million scoville heat units (SHU)!

Apocalypse Red
This pepper is almost as hot as the Carolina Reaper! Should have about 1,5 Million SHU!

Bhut Jolokia
A lovely Birthday gift from Harrier! :f_love: Bhut Jolokia aka "ghost pepper" belongs also to the hottest chilis in the world with about 2 Million SHU!

Habenero
My absolute favorite!! 300.000-500.000 SHU!

The spicy ones

*Turkish spicy pepper (had that one 2 years ago and it was delicious!)
*Serrano
*Hungarian Wax (as a native Hungarian excited to taste this one - last year the plant fell victim to evil snails!)
*Jalapeno - classic!
*Cayenne - classic too!
*Aji Charapita (also one of my favorites and "the caviar among the chilis")
*Zimbabwe Bird´s Eye (small, spicy fruits! Lovely!)
*Aurora (excited to taste this one, no idea how it tastes, was a lovely Birthday gift from Harrier)
*Little yellow trunk (no idea what this is going to be, but seeds have to be used up!)
*Little Elf (also a lovely Birthday gift from Harrier, dwarf chili)
*Kusburnu (a very spicy little dwarf chili)
*Piccante a Mazzetti (spicy little dwarf chili)

and last but not least:

The little fire kiss, which hibernates in my office and was also a Birthday gift from Harrier in 2023.
