Fifty-three years ago today, Mrs Vorpal and I met for the first time.

We didn't do anything special today, but 3 years ago, we took a floatplane to an island near Vancouver to have dinner.

Drawmaha, also known as Sviten Special, is a split-pot poker variant that combines elements of Omaha and Five Card Draw

Game Structure
• Blinds and Deal: The game begins with forced bets (blinds). Each player is dealt five hole cards face down
• First Betting Round: Players act in turn, choosing to call, raise, or fold
• Flop: Three community cards are dealt face up to the center of the table, followed by a second betting round
The Draw Phase
• Card Exchange: After the flop betting, each player may exchange up to all five of their hole cards (stand pat or draw 1-5)
o If only one card is drawn, the top card of the deck is revealed face up; the player can accept it or take the next card face down
o The number of cards you can draw may be limited (to three) if there are six or more players, to avoid running out of cards
• Draw Action: Players announce how many cards they wish to exchange in turn, with the button acting last
Turn and River
• Turn: The fourth community card is dealt, followed by another betting round
• River: The fifth and final community card is dealt, followed by the final betting round
Showdown and Pot Splitting
• Omaha Hand: Players must use exactly two of their five hole cards and three community cards to make their best Omaha hand
• Draw Hand: Players also use all five of their hole cards to make their best Five Card Draw hand[1][3][4].
• Split Pot: The pot is split equally:
o Half to the best Omaha hand.
o Half to the best Five Card Draw hand.
o The same player can win both halves (scoop) if they have the best hand in both formats
Additional Notes
• Game Format: Most commonly played as Pot Limit, but Fixed Limit games are also available

So you finally discovered it. I played my first game just about a year ago, and immediately thought that you would probably like that game too.

The strategy mostly seems to be to play solid 5CD ranges, and see if you hit something in the Omaha part. "Suited aces", for example, can offer some nice Omaha potential, so they are a great addition to a good 5CD hand. If you then have reasons to believe that you are ahead in the 5CD pot and hit at least a good draw, if not a made hand in the Omaha pot, it is time to pull the trigger, as you are likely to be at least freerolling for one pot, or ideally already close to scooping.

As it is usually the case in split pot games, you always want to play for the scoop, so there is little use in Omaha-only hands apart from steals. If you get a freeplay with them or have your stealing attempt called, you can always try to hit a decent 5CD hand with them too, of course.

Not yet sure about flush and straight draws. The ability to decline cards after drawing one essentially doubles your odds, and especially with high cards, there may be good Omaha potential too, so they seem to be strong hands. However, I have sometimes read that these hands are often overvalued, though I'm not sure if those articles referred to the same rule set. I also wonder if accepting your first draw could be useful as part of a bluffing tactic, even if you don't hit, as it announces to the rest of the table that you like your hand.

I find it interesting how the Omaha side pot influences your carding decisions, making you keep certain "kickers" and other cards that you would normally discard in standard 5CD. Sometimes, it may even make sense to stand pat with an incomplete hand without it being a snow, because the extra cards to your made hand may offer you good Omaha equity, as either a draw or a made hand. This post shows an example (you need to scroll down a bit to get to the Drawmaha part).

I almost never play on that site, but I did find that game amusing. I found that a lot of the players were playing for the Omaha pot, and hoping that they could get a 5-Card Draw hand along the way. I did the opposite, and from your linked post, you appear to agree with that strategy

I do agree, for the reasons outlined above. You want to play for both parts of the pot, and while a good 5CD hand can often hit the board well for a good Omaha hand, a good Omaha hand is almost worthless in the 5CD pot if it doesn't at least contain a pair.

I think it was David Sklansky who said in the Super System (writing about Stud Hi-Lo) that if you are going for only one half of the pot, your hand must be really good in that direction - and we know how close preflop equities are in Omaha, let alone 5-card Omaha.

Not surprisingly, players in Drawmaha cash games tend to be a lot more competent than the ones seen in freerolls, though.
