So, last day at work before going off on holiday. We're going to stay in a Scottish lighthouse for a week

If I had to guess, i'd say he's still on holiday.

+1, but I still think aiming for 100 pages is a solid move.

Quality is the aim, not quantity. At least this time I'm back and find that there's no gigantic quote chain cluttering things up.

As you know, we went to Scotland, and on the way there mrsjb explained to me that we were going to the Mull of Galloway, Scotland's most southerly point. It's a brilliant place, and there's even some sicko lighthouse webcam action to be had. It's more like Cornwall than proper Scotland, and one of its claims to fame is that they filmed 'The Wicker Man' there (the original, with Brit Ekland's arse, not the recent remake). There was a tourist leaflet that said 'Come and visit the place where they burned the wicker man!', which seemed in slightly poor taste given that poor old Edward Woodward was in it.

I went fully expecting it to piss down with rain all week, but the UK has been experiencing a heatwave, so I ended up trudging round in jeans and walking boots while all around me people were in their shorts. I usually only need a small hint of sun to get me into my shorts and flip flops, much to mrsjb's consternation, so I was gutted. I did however have the opportunity to do my Scottish accent a lot. Mrsjb said that if I said 'Aye!' again, she'd have to kill me. Obviously, she didn't, but she did hurt me quite badly.

I gave some thought to the Black Friday poker situation (I even had a dream about durrrr, which was reassuringly asexual, but otherwise not very helpful), and decided that it would probably just mean less Americans to play with, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I now find that FT have given me a $300 bonus to buy my loyalty, and that's good enough for me. I'm so shallow.

This was my first holiday with my Kindle, which meant I could avoid my usual 'Shall I take this one?', 'Will I need that one?', fret, and effectively just took everything. I read Stephen Fry's latest volume of autobiography (good, but he is an appalling whinger), and 'William Walker's First Year of Marriage' (male version of Bridget Jones, v funny, and highly recommended to fellow ball-and-chainers, like nibbana and Waiboy), as well as Easy Game Vol. 2 (starting to get it now I think) and Ryan Fees 6max Guide (recommended to me by TT, but although Mr Fees clearly knows his stuff, he writes in the style of an illiterate 16 year old. Perhaps he's being ironic.).

Just watched the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who. Really good I thought. Forced number two son to watch it with me, and now he won't let me turn his bedroom light out. I won't bang on about Doctor Who in my blog, but I've been watching it since I was five (Shit! That's 40 years!), so I have to carry on, whether it's good or not.

I should probably play some poker now.........

We're positively encouraged here. Tax-free winnings!

Well, I had 44, called for set value,

A Bu range is too wide to setmine, oop. 3 bet or fold is better.

I expect this is right, assuming that button has a wide range. I just can't help myself though. I see a small pair, I call. If I 3bet and he 4bets, it seems such a waste. I will have to give this some more thought. I'll probably end up deciding I should fold, but then I'd feel like I had no cojones left at all.

FT is obv happy with me as they let me run on EV. BR = $940. I have never had a $1K BR. If I hadn't bought my monitor, I would now. Last time I got to $950 I was immediately doomswitched. All of my appendages are crossed in anticipation of my next session, and I mean all. :f_biggrin:

And a very nice cafe it was too. The next nearest one was on the Isle of Man. You could see Scotland, England, Ireland and the Isle of Man on a clear day. It really was a lovely, peaceful (apart from our kids) place. I miss it already. They automated the lighthouse in 1988. I think that, apart from the isolation, hard work and loneliness, lighthouse keeper would be an ideal job for me. Or maybe I'm just focussing to hard on escaping from the kids.

Found this and changed my mind.

A Lighthouse Keeper’s Duty
Being a Lighthouse Keeper was one of hardest jobs around a hundred years ago. Keepers worked long grueling hours and had to be willing to put their own lives in danger in order to keep others safe. They had to work in all kinds of weather, especially during hurricanes, blizzards, and gales when passing ships were in the greatest danger. Being a Lighthouse Keeper was not a job for the faint of heart. Keepers lived at the lighthouse and were at work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They could not call in sick and rarely took a day off. Lighthouse Keepers had to light the tower’s lamp every night and make sure that the lamp stayed lit until the sun rose the next day. Although most light stations had more than one keeper, those that didn’t required the lighthouse keeper to work all through the night and into the day.

Keepers were responsible for taking care of the entire light station. If something broke they fixed it. If the tower needed to be painted they painted it. If a window was shattered they replaced it. Lighthouse Keepers were mechanics, construction workers, and sailors all rolled into one. They were highly skilled and dedicated men and women who had put others before themselves.

A Lighthouse Keeper had many duties assigned to him. Some of these duties had to be done every day. Others were scheduled to be completed on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis. No matter the date or time of day, a keeper always had something else to do. He was always busy.

The following table lists some of the more common duties performed by keepers at the Ponce Inlet Light Station on a day to day basis.

Common Lighthouse Keeper Duties and Tasks
Light the lamp at sunset and put it out at sunrise.
Fill the lamp with kerosene before every evening.
Trim the wicks of the lamp so they don’t smoke when lit.
Clean and polish the Fresnel lens every morning.
Clean the windows of the lantern room every day.
Shine all the brass in the lighthouse.
Sweep the floors and stairs of the lighthouse every day.
Clean tower windows and sills as needed.
Clean, paint, and repair all buildings on the light station when needed.
Maintain all mechanical equipment at the light station.
Maintain lighthouse log book and record all daily light station activities.
Take weather readings every day and record in log book.
Weed the walkways and maintain the light station grounds.
Take soundings of river and inlet channels. Move channel markers as needed.
Lend assistance to ships and sailors in distress as needed.
Keep an accurate inventory of all light station equipment and fuel.
Maintain light station launch (boat) and keep in good working order.
Keep boathouse clean, organized, and in good repair at all times.
Provide visitors with tour of light station as needed.
Clean keeper dwelling chimneys as needed to prevent fire.
Do not leave light station at any time without permission.
Clean house on a regular basis and make repairs as needed.
Keep privy (outhouse/bathroom) clean. Apply lime as needed.
Stack wood properly in woodsheds.
Maintain a clean uniform at all times.
Plant and tend personal garden as needed.
