October has been another very solid month, with $3K+ in consecutive monthly earnings. Naturally, I feel absolutely no guilt whatsoever running $1K above expectation.

Not long ago someone said my luck would turn when I least expected it. Given this was pronounced by <3, SnG Oracle and all-round guru, I needn't have bothered being sceptical! Related or unrelated, the big turning point for me was studying Faarcyde's 40K game sample and - separately - discovering (after all those months of pain) that there was a way to hide the green line on HEM. As soon as I did that, I stopped worrying about getting sucked out and recommenced shoving with confidence in the late stages.
My bankroll is slowly inching its way back up towards its Full Tilt heyday and if the poker world can somehow avoid any more catastrophes over the next nine months, and if my results remain steady, I might feel confident in asserting that the decision to go pro was a sound one.

"Overview
This month marks the end of the first quarter of our second year as a professional poker player. Q1 has gone well, with total expected revenue of $8,526. At the beginning of this period we set an annual earnings target of $24,000, equating to $2000 per month. Extrapolating this quarter's revenue over the year gives an annual income of $34,106, approximately $10,000 above target.
Furthermore, total earnings for this period have been below expectation by $1,973.24. Extrapolating on the above basis would give a new revised annual income of $41,998.96.
It should be noted that this equates to an EV ROI of around 10%. Discussions with other players and our own research lead us to believe that this may be an unrealistic long-term ROI at our current tournament buyin level (average $32). Nevertheless, for the purposes of comparison we observe that the top-performer at our limits consistently makes 12% ROI. However it remains prudent to make a more conservative revised estimate of $30,000 for the year.
Q2 Planning
It is our opinion that, subject to attaining a bankroll of $5000, it would be reasonable to incorporate play at the $109 limit. This is the next buyin level above the $55 tournaments which is our present maximum. Due to the failure of Full Tilt our current bankroll -- after planned withdrawals for October -- is still only around $3500. However we anticipate clearing $3000 in bonuses during November/December and this should increase our bankroll sufficiently to enable play at the new limit commencing around the beginning of 2012.
Q4 Plan
Our aim by the end of Year 2 would be to demonstrate average hourly earnings of $30-35. Realistically this is likely to be the upper limit of what can be achieved playing SnGs, given current game selection and our multi-tabling ability. Such earnings, if achievable, should nevertheless provide annual income in excess of $35,000."

As to the $, it's kind of frustrating not to feel like I can just go out and treat myself to lots of nice things but the reality of SnGs is that you really have to be disciplined enough to not spend too much when things are going well, since the three-month breakeven spell could be just around the corner...
Down-under fans should make sure they watch The Proposition, starring Ray Winstone, Emily Watson and Guy Pearce which I saw last night. I found it quite moving actually, despite the unending brutality. The scene in which one of the outlaws is viciously whipped to within an inch of his life in the main street while the townsfolk look on in ghoulish carelessness was reminiscent of Eastwood's High Plains Drifter, or even The Passion of the Christ. For some reason poor Danny Huston always gets cast as the villain (not in the "villain check/shoves turn" sense, of course). I'm sure many of you will ecall his turn as the scheming doctor in The Fugitive. Here he takes the turn as a thinking-man's psychopath, quoting contemporary poetry as he decapitates police henchmen... And all through the movie the endless, unforgiving outback stretches away into the sunset.
