So I have been trying different codecs and programs trying to find a balance between video quality and file size. What I have come up with is roughly for 30 minute video 85MB, greatly reduced from the 1GB.

Capture Program
CamStudio
Codec
ffdshow
Other program
DIVX

Setup in CamStudio
VIDEO
Options - Video Options - Compressor ffdshow video compressor
drag quality 100
open configure
encoder - MPEG4
FOURCC - DIVX
Mode - one pass quality
quality- 80
OK

Sound
Options - audio options - audio options for microphone
REcording format - 11.025 KHz mono 8 bit
Check mark Use MCI Recording
OK

Region - Fix region - select - drag box to selected size

Then Record

*enabling MCI recording increased a 34min to 396MB) but cut out the white noise from the audio
