The main topic for these sample hands is protection on the flop. We try to knock out as many hands as possible to defend our hands as good as we can.

We call a raise from UTG+2 out the BB after two others have already called. This is a very favourable flop for us because most of the time we still have the best hand here. But our hand is very vulnerable because every overcard could beat us. Therefore a donk bet is the best play here. The plan is that UTG+2 will raise and protect our hand and actually he is nice enough to do so. After the raise we are in a heads up situation and now we have to decide if its better to just call down or to 3-bet the flop. In this case its better to raise again and make a 3-bet.
We have a read that he is very aggressive so there is a good chance that he raised the flop just with 2 overcards like AK, AQ, AJ, AT or even KQ.
The main reason why we 3-bet is not that we want to avoid giving a free card on the turn. Against an unknown opponent this aspect is much more important because they will often raise for a free card. But in this example UTG+2 is a LAG so its probable that he will not check behind on the turn. Most likely he will just bet.
We 3-bet because most of the time we just have the best hand and its the best way to get as much value as possible.

We have 87s in the BB and call the BU raise according to SHC because there are enough callers. We flop two pair on a very draw heavy board. Our main goal should be to protect our hand as good as we can. The best way to achieve this is to check/raise: Because we have the read that the BU is a LAG we can assume that he will contibet most of the time even against 3 players. With this line we can confrontate MP2 and CO with 2 bets and when they call us with a gutshot we make a nice profit because every wrong decission made by our opponents will gain us money in the long run.

Two players limp preflop and CO raises. We call QTs out of the BB. Again we hit two pair on the flop but now the best play is to donk. The main reason for that decission is that CO is unknown in this example – so we have no idea if he will contibet the flop against 3 players. It would be horrible for us if everybody would check the flop. Furthermore our hand is a bit more robust in this case because the board is not as draw heavy as it was in the first example.
So you always have to ponder between the risk (everybody could check) and the benefit of protection. In this case „benefit“ means how much the likelihood for winning the hand on the river increases when you protect your hand. You need a lot of practice for it but after some time you will get a feeling for these situations.
