This sample hand deals with the move call for overcall on the river. That means that we only call a bet on the river so that we induce calls from the following opponents. You often play like this with hands you would have raised for value in a heads-up situation. In a multiway situation it is the intention to get the same value from the overcallers if we are in front but we do not risk a 3-bet and lose more value if we are behind.
A good example are one card straights:
Preflop: Hero is MP3 with J♠, T♠
UTG calls, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 calls, 2 folds, Hero calls, 2 folds, SB calls, BB checks.
Flop: (5.00 SB) Q♣, J♥, 5♠ (5 players)
SB bets, BB calls, UTG calls, UTG+2 calls, Hero calls.
Turn: (5.00 BB) K♦ (5 players)
SB checks, BB bets, UTG calls, UTG+2 calls, Hero calls, SB calls.
River: (10.00 BB) 9♦ (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, UTG+2 bets, Hero calls, SB calls, 2 folds.
Final Pot: 13.00 BB
In this hand our odds are sufficient to call on the flop especially because we are in position. On the turn we have a one card open-ended straight draw and outs for trips. That means we have to call again. On the river we hit our straight and UTG+2 bets. Although AT is not very likely it is better to just call here. If we would raise the other opponents would fold and with UTG+2 we only have a split pot. We should get more value on average if we just call.
