The main attraction to live-home games I reckon, remains the fact you can play at your leisure with some good friends in a comfortable environment, and still have a high quality of play and nice cash to be gained.
In general it's approached as a fun thing in my experience, and infrequently as well. Of course, necessary preparation is required, to ensure you get the maximum out of your evening.
My recommendations are to have a fresh new bicycle deck of cards (most chip-sets come with low-quality cards - a good set for around $5 will perform for years), along with a chip set that feels good to play with and of course the surface where you are playing makes all the difference - most casinos will provide all you require for a game with friends including a dealer, if you have a certain minimum of people participating - that would be held at the casino though and additional charges could be applicable.
From memory, the PartyPoker VIP store have a half-decent table surface available - I played a home game using this last time and it was sufficient for six people or so and plenty room for drinks etc..
For timing, there can be delays in between hands if your having a discussion or someone gets distracted, in such cases we decide to put the blinds up every 1/2/3 orbits depending on the people - and dynamically change this as the game progresses.
Starting stacks should always be a really decent size in relation to the blinds unless you get a good reason not to - this makes the game more interesting in the early stages and heads-up can last for a while too, it depends on how you want the game to pan out.
