$0.05/$0.1 Fixed-Limit Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with Q:h, A:h.
3 folds, Hero raises, 2 folds, BU calls, SB folds, BB calls.

Flop: (6.4 SB) 2:h, 4:s, A:c (3 players)
BB checks, Hero bets

Fermina asked about this hand or one very similar (that I didn't find). Basically we've hit top pair on the flop after raising preflop and the question was "Why bet the flop? Why not slowplay and allow someone to catch up a bit?"

Its important to discuss slowplays, but not because they're often more profitable. Most of the time we should fastplay as the more profitable option. HOWEVER, we always have the option to slowplay when we've hit a strong hand. As a result its important to know when and why to fastplay/slowplay a strong hand.

In this situation I like to fastplay. The BTN is very loose and will have a wide range. The BB is tight but given his position he's more likely to have a wide range. When they're on a lot of hands they're more likely to have hit a weak gutter draw. They have 4 outs to improve on the turn and they'll get 7.4:1 to call the flop.

Its profitable for me to extract value from these hands along with weak made hands and anything else that the BTN may decide to call with loosely on the flop.

In this example, I think pretty much every ingredient needed for a slowplay is missing. The hand is not a monster and the next card might give someone a straight.

But what if it is a long HU session? Same cards, but position and only one opponent?

Since I get dealt mostly trash hands (and usually play them on the button), I'd like to be able to check behind on the flop once in a while if I miss nearly completely.

If I only check empty (or once every 10 000 hands with a supermonster), then my opponent will pick up on this and take my backdoor equity away completely by betting out on the turn. The alternative of c-betting on the flop 100% doesn't sound good either.

I still bet in a HU match.

As the BB, even Q-high or K-high can be played for showdown value and we can induce bluffs. Early in a HU match players can be pretty showdown bound.

Hi!

Not really much to discuss here. You bet here because you bet 100% of your hands here and also because you cant really expect to get much value by slowplaying since only hands that will pay you off are those you want to valuebet in firstplace. I wouldnt say that is so much for protection since most hand with at least gutshot will call but basically just for the value and balance of it...you bet and hope someone has a pair and will cd or someone decides to spew which is obviosuly great. If you get raised then Im basically always waiting till turn to raise

If it was HU then its possible to check such flops but obviosuly your game has to be balanced in different direction...but that is another story
