BTN shows T♥ K♦

BB wins $1,316

BU strong reg. BB less good reg. I'm puzzled by BB's overcall here and suspect I'm missing something.

I would guess that, although BB knows BU is wide here (b/c he abuses) he should assume I'm not calling wide here. At least, he should assume I have some kind of value hand here (A8s+?)

So, although he definitely gets odds vs our mutual ranges with KQ, doesn't he still have to be somewhat risk averse here?

thx

Well seems ok overcall for me. Yeah there is some risk obviously, but one has to take some risk now and then, correct? :)

From nash:

BU shove 59.6%, 22+ Ax+ K2s+ K4o+ Q2s+ Q6o+ J2s+ J7o+ T3s+ T7o+ 95s+ 97o+ 85s+ 87o 74s+ 76o 64s+ 53s+ 43s
Hero call 19.6%, 55+ A2s+ A7o+ K8s+ KTo+ QTs+ JTs
BB overcall 21.3%, 44+ A2s+ A5o+ K9s+ KTo+ QTs+

BU range is likely capped when he shoves. He would usually induce with premium hands. Though does BU abuse as wide as nash would suggest is another question. I assume you would still call at least 66+, A7s+, A9o+ and some KJs, KQo?

So I think KQo is very reasonable overcall hand.

I hate it, there is no way the btn is pushing that wide

Well ante adjusted BU is around 11BB deep effectively (versus one villain obv) so approaching this spot as shove/fold is reasonable to force max icm pressure to BB. For me stack setup is pretty much perfect for wide abuse. Hero has stack to still fold without decently strong hand and when hero folds BB is forced to fold almost everything (95%+ if he does not make absurd calls).

So while I would not go as wide as nash personally, my range would still be around 50% I dont see reason to be tighter versus two good regs.

How would others approach this spot from BU view?

PS: BB was less good reg so that might be reason to be tighter and perhaps have bigger raise-fold range versus him.

Yeah, it's definitely fine for BU to be wide here.

If SB folds, BB must be super tight in calling: {99+ AKs };

However, once SB is AI, BB's overcall range gets pretty wide:
21.3%, {44+ A2s+ A5o+ K9s+ KTo+ QTs+}

So obviously the protection offered by SB being all in, combined with the better odds, makes it ok for BB to exploit the BU's wide range.

I'm just surprised that he can call stuff like KTo here. i.e. Trying to get my head round why he doesnt just hope SB gets busted and he gets ITM or alternatively gains the slight chip lead when SB beats BU.

wasnt the original question about whether the BB can overcall wide, not whether the BTN can push wide?

obviously the BTN CAN push wide, that is in nash. my read on the situation is that a lot of reg BTNs are not going to push 50%+ in this spot because they have a raise/fold raise/call range as well. Also reg BTNs in general (myself included) are too tight in this spot. therefore the BB overcall is bad IMO.

So should BB take marginal sort of overcalls or is there point to stay more on safe side for reasons Tim mentioned (hope for HU or slight chiplead). Should we for those reasons use some positive edge when analyzing overcall range.

I feel this is weighted towards weak aces, small pairs and nice pushing hands like broadways/SCs that are too weak to r/c but very pretty. Would it still be marginal vs that range? I haven't done wizard.

even if it was marginal I would not want to overcall in a marginal spot.

We also haven't talked about the SB range which is usually tighter than the 20% nash suggests.

For all the reasons you guys have said, I didn't like the overcall (even if it's techincally ok if everyone is on Nash). It's no surprise to me that BB is about $10k down after 50k games.

I agree about BU (BernardC) too. His position is comfortable enough in this spot that he probably isn't jamming the whole nash range since he doesn't need to take that thin an edge.

Thanks for the analysis.
