I really felt I played this had badly and not only because I called at the SB with a mediocre hand
against a raise... :f_cry:
I'm posting it here to see just how bad it was.

your first mistake is that you didn't 3bet this preflop. AJo against a BTN raise is 120% a 3bet always.
as played you should not donk bet/call river. just check/call due to his turn raise.

how i wanted to play it is 3bet pre bet flop bet river. if raised on the turn i might consider 3bet since he could have many Jx hands. river bet if you 3bet or call if you just call turn.

contact me on skype and you can see one of my sessions. Im not the greatest but at least i beat 5c/10c over 150k hands with a good winrate.

Hi!

Your first mistake is already in your first sentance. You did not call in SB with mediocre hand but vs BTN open raising range you are calling with pretty close to premium hand.

Equity Win Tie
BU 39.65% 37.39% 2.26% 44+, A2s+, K2s+, Q6s+, J7s+, T7s+, 97s+, 87s, A2o+, K7o+, Q8o+, J8o+, T9o
SB 60.35% 58.10% 2.26% AJo

...you can add some hands and remove some but it should be pretty clear that AJ is waaaaay ahead of his range...
...and when you add that you are on SB which is worst position and that you want to make BB fold you really dont want to call there ever....its a tipical raise or fold spot preflop....with this one its no-brainer 3bet.

Flop is fine...so is the turnbet but I would 3bet turn here.It really looks like that J improved his hand and since you beat all reasonable Jx you want to extract some $ from KJ,QJ,JT. But dont blame you for just calling down vs unknown and taking a read.

River donk has no point. Its to prevent him from freeSD I would assume but since you already made up your mind that you are not favourite after his turnraise what really changed on the river? Absolutelly nothing... so either go for turn 3bet or calldown.
If you want a funky line which wants to extract value(like turn 3bet does) you can call turn and c/r river but vs unknown I dont like it much...still it makes more sense that donk.

Point you need to think is why you just called his raise on turn

what hands you think he could raise your turn bet where he may be ahead ?

Everybody seem to be saying the same thing.
But my pre-flop game isn't as evolved that I can make snap decisions on a hands
playability against different positions outside of starting hands charts.
This site starting hands chart says fold in this situation, so I naturally felt bad.
The mediocre label is from that chart, I didn't call it mediocre by chance.

I'm open to hearing suggestions on how I can evolve past that point.
If I need to be able to calculate percentages on the spot or something.
I really do not know what is demanded of me to be able to discern that.

so either go for turn 3bet or calldown

This is more easy to comprehend and I will keep it in mind next time a similar situation happens.

the standard openraise chart here on ps is for full ring i think... its way to tight to be used in a 6max, AJo is a really strong hand and you will 3bet most opr with it. When you get to silver status there is an opr-chart for short handed i think. But if you have equilab for instance you can see the normal ranges for a player using the pokerstrategy standard in different positions. So UTG in a 6max is equivalent to mp2 in a full ring. Its a bit tight, but its alot better to start with than going with the full ring opr-chart. You also have a 3bet-range following that one and a big blind defence. From that you can make your own chart in excel or something. Its actually kinda nice to have infront of you. Makes reading ranges and such alot easier. And youll want to expand it as you improve your game further, cause it is kinda nitty.

I see so that kind of info can safely be labelled as too advanced until I hit silver.
I will concentrate on other issues and not worry too much about stuff like that.
I was playing full ring in this hand, but I think that some sat out and some spots where vacant.

I still don't have a good handle on hand-ranges,
but I feel I have a somewhat better picture what it is about now.
I will put my attention on the turn river aspects of this issue and leave opening
hands issues more advanced than what I have to deal with on bronze level well alone for now.

Thanks! :f_cool:

Imo... mastering preflop game is what wins microstakes FL. To know when and how you are to get involved in a hand will collect most of the preflop mistakes which oposition makes...like limping,coldcalling,...

Postflop ABC game does just fine to beat micros quite well.

I see.
So basically if I want to beat microlimit I should have preflop mastered.
Well I will just have to work harder on the stuff I've got now so I can
get on with the more advanced stuff later.

It is interesting to hear about the advanced stuff,
but I think that I need more time with the basics and only then I'm ready to
try to do all the "fancy" preflop moves.

in reality there is really no need to do fancy plays anywhere (maybe except on the high absolutely high stakes not even sure there) but you just gotta focus on being solid. play hands that gives profit and make sure you capitalize on your opponents mistakes.

I get what you are saying.
But to me new solid info in too large amounts gives me
information overload at the table.
I can only deal with so much new stuff at a time.
New = fancy
That being new to me.

Anyway right now I'm trying to get comfortable with juggling several new (to me) concepts.
Hand ranges and what hands beyond the basic PS chart are good
before the flop becomes a bit too much leading me to mess up my post flop play.
Cause much of my good post-flop play is stuff that I still have to concentrate to get right.

So for me I just have to grind out some more hours at the table until I've got that stuff nailed.
Then I can return for new stuff to integrate. :f_cool:
