Now that I'm looking at this play, I think that I should have mucked my hand because I'm most likely behind a pair of Q or even 2pairs+. If the fishy villain was on a draw, I think he preferred to call to see the river cheaply.
I noticed that I find it hard to lay down my medium made hands after I read a book where they explained that, after we invest 1/3 of our stack, we should avoid fold our hand because this is the threshold we never get pot odds worse than 33%. If we believe our hand isn't worth going all in with, we should play for pot control and never bet over 1/3 of our stack.
However, in this particular example, if I played for pot control I'm giving villain a free card in a dangerous board. It is true that I can call a bet on the river, but villain will only bet in most cases if the draw completed and will mostly always fold to my bet if he misses. This way, I rule out the check option. At the same time, if I bet, I have invested more that 1/3 of my stack and should now be willing to go all in. And that is what I did, but I'm not sure if it is a profitable move.
