History the villain is a maniac opening wide from all positions lots of 3 betting no fold to 3 bets pushing people off pots but rarely going to show down when he does he has a speculative hand

I read somewhere in the strategy section that the way to play a maniac is to fight the hand all the way or give up early I decided to fight this one.

As he does not fold to 3 bets and i think I am ahead of his range I just flat it.

The flop gives me 2 pair so I raise pot size for value he rarely folds to cbets/

The turn brings a fd he raises me against any other player I would now fold
but this can be a bluff move by him

i dont think the river card changes anything and bet out 50% as a block bet
I get raised again but I am not going to give up for such a small bet as if he does have me beat I will gain a lot of info on him so I call

So how did I play this hand ?
Going back through my data base I am losing a lot to maniacs and very loose/aggressive players without showdown'

Preflop: why are you calling a speculative hand preflop? Just to hit? You will burn a lot of money vs someone that pushes ppl off pots with these hands.

Think of the spots where you hit an Ax. Do you call one, two or three streets?

Postflop: since he is a maniac why donk vs him instead of letting him bet which is what we expect a maniac to do? Then we can raise or call and repeat the process on the turn.

As played you are too optimistic here and if you don't the river why not shove? Makes no sense to leave some money behind.

I understand what you are saying about the speculative hand and you are right I should have let him lead then raised him
however overall this does not leave me any the wiser on how to deal with maniacs and loose and very aggro player. Perhaps the answer is too long but if you could point me to some resources in strategy section . it would be very useful ,as playing against this type of player is one of my biggest leaks.

What does an aggro player or maniac do?

They bet a lot, they raise a lot. They do not fold nor call much.

That means that you want to play into their game.

Things you want to avoid: calling to hit, chasing, playing scared with weaker hands (ie: TPNK, 2nd pair), etc
Why? Because you will donate a ton of money to them in small/medium pots.

So really you want to let them do the betting and you call/raise with a wide range of hands, a lot wider than you would normally call (so bluffcatching lighter).

And avoid being the one that tries to run bluffs.
