Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has Q♥ A♥

UTG raises to 3 BB, Hero calls 3 BB, fold, fold, fold, BB calls 2 BB

Flop: (9.5 BB, 3 players) 8♥ 3♣ 9♥
BB checks, UTG bets 6.5 BB, Hero raises to 16 BB, fold, UTG calls 9.5 BB

Turn: (41.5 BB, 2 players) K♥
UTG checks, Hero bets 24 BB, UTG calls 24 BB

River: (89.5 BB, 2 players) 7♥
UTG checks, Hero bets 38 BB, UTG calls 38 BB

I usually call fd with two overs especially those with showdown value, and I raise smaller fd and few nut fd, gutshots like JQs, but I think I should look for max EV multiway and not having much balanced range.

So do you think that in this spot raise is better EV than call? Somehow when I call and flush completes and I start with agression people usually give credit and fold. Well, I use this fact also when I have oesd, or turn marginal pair into bluff (unbalanced, exploitatively). Downside is that if he has set he can direct shove, but he has many more overs and worse draws than sets which makes me raise.

I would raise also JQs here, and thats all from bluffs. Strong hands I tend to call vs utg range and raise on later streets because he has many more overpairs than flush draws, and expect regs to b/f overpairs 3way.

Bet sizes ?

Hey GingerKid,

Imo it's very difficult to say whether EV of raising is higher than calling. It really depends on who is involved in the hand imo.

One thing is for sure though - we maximise our pot-odds and implied odds by smooth calling and encouraging BB to overcall.

Also UTG potentially has a strong range - firstly because he's UTG, and secondly because he's cbetting 3way - so it may be that we may not have much fold equity. Not necessarily a huge issue since we are slightly favourite vs stuff like JJ etc, but we may end up making more money by flatting in a situation where we don't expect as much fold equity.

But yeah, general gameplan for raising HU sounds fine imo.

So you dont expect villians to fold overpair when I raise 3way? yeah if they dont fold it raise is very bad, but generally regs are tight 3way in stars.

Yeah, I don't necessarily expect them to. Having said that if they do we must be folding out a huge part of their range and I can easily see EV of raising being higher.

We have pretty decent equity vs overpairs if they do continue at least - favourite vs TT/JJ etc.
