First on making your decision you look for the stats/info/notes you have on the opener. Here you have observations - it is ok.
Second step - look who is behind. You have to pull this off only if villains behind you are the right ones. You do not want to pull a bluff if behind you are active players or unknowns.
I do not accept your reasons for not c betting the flop.
You call turn and are ready to fold on bad river cards... Question is - what are the good cards?
What are you bluffcatching if more than half of the deck is against you?
What would you do on the next streets? Give up?
Is 3-betting light part of your normal game?
I suppose it is not, based on how you motivated it to begin with and how you failed to c-bet flop.
Playing this way is fine, but chose better cards like suited one-gappers at worst - and raise smaller to get better risk/reward ratio. Its not that suited one-gappers are so very much better than any other trash, it is that you have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise you'll be 3-betting too much.
Three-betting because he folded a couple of times to you before is not a valid reason, it's perhaps the other way around if he (mis-) uses stats the same way you do.
On the flop you hit TP, which is a monster in spots like this. C-bet and take the pot. If he calls once, reevaluate on turn and shoot another barrel if you deem it fit. (It's even better if he calls once and fold on turn = more profit) People hate playing in 3-bet pots OOP. That is why you would play this way - not because someone seems weak vs you, and not because you hope they fold preflop - you hope they call because you have initiative and position.
The result of the flop check is a tricky situation you created. Don't think too much about whether what to do on the river. It is a standard situation anyway (to catch a bluff or not with a middling hand). The true problems lie long before that.
There is an excellent video by pleno1 where he plays NL10 Zoom, precisely playing the style you might be looking for. It's a freebie, strongly recommended.
I have to admit I misread the hand the first time around. I thought it was the original raiser calling. It doesn't change much, except I'd be a bit more careful (he flatted a 3-bet and has something he likes). I'd still cbet flop though.
i think hero played post flop fine appart from the 3B pre - IMO this hand is mid strength that wants to now pot control and get to showdown as cheap as possible, not start building a bigger pot OTF. Why not cbet with your strongest hands, draws / hands that bricked?
the river should be a clear call vs someone with a bluffing range because we allowed villian to have all his bluffs but the question is does he double barrel with hands like KQs,AJ,AQ,AK etc or does he fire turn and give up OTR....
If we cbet flop whats the plan when villian calls the flop cbet? check turn, fold river? or start barrelling off with a hand with showdown equity that wants to pot control...
Also consider if villian has a hand like AK-AJs, maybe KQs we get check raised and then what? fold...?
IMO objective #1 is to get to showdown and maybe get a street of value from villians bluffs.
It's probably close though because we can bet for some equity protection against overcards but it's not as slam dunk as described as above
Well, if you 3-bet lightly, you are not there to pot-control. You are there to steal the pot. You cannot do that by checking. If it doesn't work you get out and try to steal another pot. Checking will only put you in a terrible spot (like here). Most cards that peels off when you hold 9-high (even with a pair) is a potential disaster. Checking is essentially giving up. What do you represent? AQ? 55?
Apart from not representing anything, you give uo the initiative and on later streets you are lost, hoping villain will be bluffing. But guess what, bluffs are rare in 3 bet pots on low limits.
Yes, as played it is a clear river fold. If the big blind is remotely normal, his range is strong here. The most likely hands in his range are probably QQ/JJ/TT and maybe AK/AQs/+maybe some more suited broadways that play relatively well 3-ways (when he entered the original raiser was still there, you don't play 33, QTo or 76s that way in a 3-bet pot OOP).
Given that we checked flop, I'm most likely folding already on the turn more or less knowing that there will be a river barrel to call to see showdown. Note also that the pattern 3-bet/check behind looks suspicious. Yet the BB doesn't hesitate and has a healthy stack. From the villains perspective, it would be awful to fire turn (as a bluff) and check river because the pattern 3-bet/check behind/fold is not to be expected from anybody very often. There will be a river barrel.
just because we 3betting light pre does not mean we can't pot control post those things are independent of each other
If villian showed QJc then your play was perfect?? you got two streets of value
honestly cbet is not that good, villian will call you with TT/JJ and check raise you with his draws so you only fold out hands that have 6 outs vs you.
The worst overcard on the turn is an ace but for the rest don't worry so much - you need to think more about your villians ranges and how poor equity they have.
Apart from not representing anything, you give uo the initiative and on later streets you are lost, hoping villain will be bluffing. But guess what, bluffs are rare in 3 bet pots on low limits.
people are bluffing in 3B pots but if they really aren't then shouldn't just check down our weak showdown hands because we don't expect to be bluffed?
Ask yourself what does a cbet accomplish value??? bluff??? we fold out hands that have low equity vs us and get called or x/r by the rest
The river is not a clear check fold, the only hands villian can have are TT or JJ, and all the other hands bricked AJs,AQs,AKs,KQs and we even saw QJs so that's 20 combos of bluffs and 12 combos for value. Not even sure villian would DB JJ or TT in this spot so he's basically got quads or bluffs (and we block a random 89)
Glad hero showed that result because it backed up the theory but even not to be orientated by the result the explanation is above
Exactly we repped AQ or two overcards so villian double barrelled as a bluff to make us fold it.... therefore your play rocked. Don't adjust to start cbetting vs him, check back some weaker made hands and let him bluff off
The only time this becomes really tricky for us is when villian is capable of realising we are good enough to check back some weak made hands and double barrell with overbet river to make us fold
I don't mind cbetting and folding hands with equity vs us. There are many cards we do not want to see on turn and river. If wee had like JJ... Then maybe you will be right.
we can cbet for equity protection and honestly I agree with out hand it's probably close between betting and checking but it's a good discussion to think about why we doing the things we are doing - it's not as clear to just 3B and cbet and there are often other lines +EV, in this case we should take this line vs villian in future
vs an overcard we can call one bet and probably fold riv to a DB on a KQA but on this runout vs anyone non nitty should be a call it's the perfect runout for our hand
