Should I fold pocket aces?

My most recent tournament I have played, left me feeling a bit annoyed about the hand that took me out. Decided to post here and see if people who know what they are talking about can help me learn from the experience...

Final table, 8 players
Blinds: 1000/2000
Ante 200
My stack: 40000 chips

UTG: All in for 5000
Fold
Raise 22000 All In
Raise 70000 All In
Call 20000 All In
Fold

Then it comes around to me on the small blind, with A♠: A♣: , and the big blind still to act, however, he only has 20000 chips. The only player who had me covered was all-in for 70000.

My thoughts were... if 4 players are going all-in, then there is a good chance that there are the other two aces between them, so I may be drawing dead, although I currently have the best hand. And with well over 100000 chips in the pot, there is a lot of value to call.

My question/discussion is: Facing 4 other players in this situation... or in any other situation for that matter, is it EVER a good idea to fold pocket aces?

I left in 5th place and the winner of this hand ended up winning the tournament some 10 hands later

Hey RobG94,

The only time it is a good idea to fold AA preflop is in a satellite or steps tournament where everyone gets the same prize and even then only on the bubble.

I folded AA pre in a Steps tourney on 888 last week as I was 2/56 with 44 getting the next Step and the 3rd chip stack open shoving for 40BBs every hand.

Theres a better chance that you are against QQ and KK + AK/AQ than the other AA. Even if you are against the other AA its still +EV.

You only need to beat the big stack in this situation to not go bust and he is ALOT wider than just one combo of AA. :f_biggrin:

You could fold if there were 5 or 4 people left and they were pretty even stacked, because then you will be almost guaranteed 3 [big] places bump. 5-2 is a big bump, but 8-5 is not. So calling All In with aces preflop here is good (you dont say) :f_thumbsup:

Edit: Wow, you dodged a bullet there 8-o As I was saying the bigstack is alot wider, I didnt put him on fuc*ing 33 ♦

no reason to fold. every extra player who has an ace is actually good for you here, as they have very little equity as a result.

variation is part of the game unfortunately. Online even the greatest player in the world only has so much of an edge over a bobble toy set to press "call" on repeat, and sometimes that bobble toy is going to win.

Clear stack off for sure or it’s what Lazza already mentions that you’re playing a satellite, but then it’s not so likely you get this kind of action at the final table.

Well, as I said its not much of a clear call if all 4 players have 30k chips, we have like 29k, and there are 5 players. Im pretty sure ICM programs would suggest folding. By folding aces we almost guarantee ourselves atleast 2 big pay jumps, if not 3. :f_thumbsup:
