SB: $7.90 (79 bb)
BB: $15.35 (153.5 bb)
UTG: $2.20 (22 bb)
Hero (MP): $18.55 (185.5 bb)
CO: $10.50 (105 bb)
BTN: $8.38 (83.8 bb)

Preflop: Hero is MP with A 2
UTG folds, Hero raises to $0.25, CO folds, BTN calls $0.25, SB folds, BB calls $0.15

Flop: ($0.80) 9 J 5 (3 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $0.40, BTN raises to $1.43, BB folds, Hero??

Spoiler

Hero calls $1.03

Turn: ($3.66) 2 (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $2.33, Hero??

Preflop: My standard open from MP.

Flop: Hit nut FD + BDSD + 1 over. I think check/calling and cbetting are both fine. Decided to cbet, but then unkown BTN raised (plays 40/0 in 5 hands). What to do?

Spoiler

Turn: I called flop and missed the turn (don't think 4th pair changes anything). Check/fold?

You should play according to odds.

The pot odds I have on the flop are 27%. Even against sets only I have 25,5% of equity. With implied odds it should be a call. The turn pot odds are 39% and the equity against flopped sets only is 18%, so I should fold.

The problem is that I can't be sure if he has sets only.

What about 3betting the flop?

should we x/b otf vs a 40/0 guy (no fe)? as played, call otf fold turn if not improved?

I prefer betting OTF and I would call villains raise. Turn is close between folding or calling.

Alleen:
You didn't calculate turn pot odds correctly. With 39% pot odds villain would have bet over pot size. I got around 28%.
If we put villain on a set it is a fold imo. If we put him on a looser range:

MP2 26.83% 26.83% 0.00% Ad2d
MP3 73.17% 73.17% 0.00% JJ, 99, 55, AJs, T9s, QdTd, AJo, T9o

It is closer. Since we cannot know his exact range and we cannot know if he will call enough OTR when we hit I prefer folding OTT but calling shouldn't be terribly wrong.

That loose guy will have a wide range OTF. Our A high might be good at the moment. He might call a lot with weaker flush draws. We have a lot of equity and we might get a lot of value against a calling station when we hit. I prefer betting here. And we have only 5 hands + villain seems passive postflop. He might very well be playing fit or fold postflop and in that case our cbet has huge fold equity.

We should put pressure vs the loose guy. Flush will be obvious and we may not get paid if we hit.

I think that accomplishes our goals. No matter if it is 1/2 or 2/3. Trash will fold and those hands that are calling will call. Our hand doesn't need protection and we just want to charge weaker draws and increase the pot a bit to get it all in if we hit.

It is a mw pot and we do not want to bet big cause when we do not hit on turn , the pot would be enormous.
1/2 psb does it well.

I tend to cbet smaller in multi-way pots + I set myself better pot odds to call in case of facing a raise.

So you are cbetting 1/2 pot here too with sets and overpairs etc...?

If we had something like AJ with no diamonds or JJ it would be important to bet bigger to protect our hand but in this case it is not necessary.

Yeah I just don't like that. Easy bet sizing tell.

Theoretically, we should cbet semi-bluffs and monsters with the same sizing. Exploitativelly, since BTN is probably a recreational player, I don't mind to cbet smaller as a semi-bluff and larger for value (+ protection). I'm not affraid of being exploited by opponents there, especially in multi-way pots.

In other words, I would cbet sets and overpairs bigger in this particular situation.

I agree it's an easy bet sizing tell, but we should ask yourself will they really notice that? For example, in asimoses videos here, he explicitelly advises to bet larger for value and smaller as a bluff on theese limits.
