Hi guys,

I am wondering how to play hands like this one. I find them a little tricky as they are quiet good and I want to get some value, on the other hand it is easy to loose quiet a bit of chips at this stage in the tournament. Basically I am not really sure how to play these spots when not shortstacked (push/fold) and not really deep either ( although in this example I am comfortable with a good 20BB). I tend to fold to avoid loosing chips in post flop plays.

In this hand I choose to minraise as I want to get some value for the hand. Should a raise a little bigger preflop?
I check the flop as we see 2 overcards with which the opponent could easily have called preflop. Then I hit trips, but with the flush now on the board, should I fold this one? I think the opponent might also bet with a pair of aces or queens, as I didn't show any strenght on the flop. Then the river doesn't really change much imo. Really doubting if I should call or fold because of the flush. I didn't really have a read on the opponent.

I would raise more pre, personnaly like 400. I dont like min raising.
I would cbet the flop, BB is just checking and we could win a pot easily. (Cbet 550 maybe)
Turns I would call his bet,
River I would call his bet. Like you did.
We can't assume he has flush, but yo guys both have big stacks, I wouldnt risk my tournament on this hand for sure. Many time he will have Ax Qx there I think. If it was a smaller stack I would gladly go broke on turn.

A very interesting hand.

I don’t think it’s bad to min raise on the BTN, but then I would most likely Cbet most of the time when you are the pre-flop aggressor. As played his min bet looks weak and maybe you can value raise with trips here. He can easy call with Ax I think, but calling him down on the bubble isn’t bad ether.

Cheers,

PRE as said it's ok to minraise from BTN as you will have position. if other spot I agree we need to go a bit bigger.
remember now that his calling range here is usually (unless you have stats on villain) is quite wide. Moreover, villain could just 3bet you here with a top hand (of course could be trapping, depends on his table awareness and your profile so far also)

OTF I think we have to bet aprox 500 - if we dont (which is ok) for me we decide to quit the hand.

as played, OTT we call the small bet (we still have some outs vs a flush)

as played OTR we still call but not very very excited. But there are many combos that can pay us off, as our hand is a bit disguised. Of course we lose from any flush ... but that is poker :)

p.s. if BB is an extremely passive player (i.e. PRE,FLOP) and all of a sudden he bets/bets, he is or he THINKS he is powerful :)

Pre: the raise is fine. K9o is in my raising range here. A shove may also be a good option. The short stacked CO means that due to ICM factors, the blinds have to call extremely tight. Before shoving however, we need to know that both blinds are thinking players who would be aware of the ICM implications of this spot.

OTF: My decision to c-bet will depend on how wide BB calls pre-flop. The wider he calls the less chance he has an ace.

OTT: A good player who has made a flush would be sizing a bet here to get stack in by the river, so a larger bet would be more common. Also, a good player's flush range here may be quite narrow. KTss, JTss perhaps 78ss, that's only 3 combos. So the chance we have a good player with a made flush is very small.

However, a poor player may have called with more speculative suited spades. And followed this by a poor bet sizing when the flush comes in. So maybe we will see J7ss at SD if this player is poor, or indeed any random spades.

OTR: If villain does have a flush, his bet sizing is again very poor. Against this poor player, I am expecting to see a flush or a Queen. There are more combos of Qx than suited spades in this player's range. A quick tot up of of flushes, versus the Qx hands, gives us about 45% equity. And we only need 23% to profitably call.

There may be other hands villain can hold, but most of these hands increase our equity rather than decrease it.

You state you have "no read" on villain. Do you use a HUD? Tracking software and the HUDs they offer can make the decisions you are faced with here a lot easier.

ICMIZER has K9o as the bottom or your Kx shove range here. We can shove 33%: any pp, any ace, any suited king, Q5s, QTo, J9s, JTo, T9s.
