A final table heads up ICM question.

Hey everyone,

I'm just learning ICM, so this may seem like a rookie question, but thanks in advance for your help. I've been replaying a tourney I won over the weekend and was using the ICM feature in PT4 replayer. I noticed that there were a lot of spots that were PUSH, but the effective stacks were around 26BB, I was the chip captain with around 45bb.

Now should I be open shoving there or trying to play pots with those PUSH hands? Keep in mind that this is a micro stakes 45 man and I think I want to play pots with this deep of stacks.

PUSH means you cannot be exploited from any winning calling range. But that doesnt really mean you would be winning $EV. That is because if you shove against a fish with the weakest of your PUSH range but he calls you with a hand hes not supposed to - you both would be losing money. The only winners would be the rest of the table because they get a freeroll for a payjump.

Thats why with more than 20bb you should be playing small pots.

Coffeeyay thinks that even with 7 bb stacks, there are hands that the button should limp instead of pushing. With 10 bb effective stacks, there are also some hands that the button should minraise. Needless to say, with 26 bb eff. stacks, HU regs hardly ever openpush nowadays, they have a range for limping and a range for minraising, play 100% of hands or close to it on the button.

Study some HU videos in the Pokerstrategy library to begin with.

Mastering HU play does take ages. There are 4 buy-ins on the line in the HU stage of a 45-man, though, so the HU study may add 1% or so to the overall 45-man ROI.

I will spend sometime watching the HU vids as soon as I'm done with the Collin Moshman tourney vids.

As I suspected, I've been doing a lot of the right things in HU.

Don’t forget that in a HU situation $EV and cEV is the same.
That means that there is no ICM factor anymore.
