Should I have 3 Bet on the Turn to win this pot or did I get trapped. Where did I go wrong?

So this hand completely confused me by the end, and I didnt expect to lose to two pair, especially after getting checked on the flop. Did he trap me, and what could I have done differently in this hand.

As always I will only include the pertinent players in the hand since I have to type it out.

FYI - I just posted another thread right before this one where I lost to this same player

6 Max Table
NL 4 (.02/.04)

SB - 66 BB
HERO (BB) - 87.75 BB

HERO Dealt
Q♠: 8♥:

SB Calls .5BB
HERO (BB) Checks

TOTAL POT - 4 BB

FLOP
7♦: 9♠: Q♣:

SB Checks
HERO (BB) Bets 2.25 BB
SB Calls 2.25 BB

TOTAL POT - 7.5BB

TURN
7♦: 9♠: Q♣: 3♥:

SB Bets 7.5BB
HERO (BB) Calls 7.5BB

TOTAL POT - 22.5 BB

RIVER
7♦: 9♠: Q♣: 3♥: 4♠:

SB Bets 11.25 BB
HERO (BB) Calls 11.25 BB

SB Shows 9♦: Q♦:

SB Wins the pot with Two Pair, Q's and 9's

What also threw me off on this hand is he lowered his % of his bet down. On the TURN he bet the pot, but on the River he only bet half pot which to me put him on a weaker hand. I never expected him to flip two pair.

Where did I go wrong on this one. As always thank you so much for your help!

The guy just completes pre so he can have pretty much anything.
His donk OTT looks weird and that is often a strong move from a weaker player. I might not still fold right away but OTR it might be better to believe he has hit something good.

Blind vs Blind this should be a raise.

punish limpers!

In other words, -- raise pre-flop.

I don't fault you calling him down to the river.

It's a tough situation, and sometimes, you're just going to lose.

I'm interested in what other's say about this. This situation happens to us all -- and very often.

The situation is "Top pair with weak kicker" vs an opponent betting out.

The worst of it is that in this hand, hitting your 8 makes your hand even worse!

Your question "Should I have 3 Bet on the Turn to win this pot" has no absolute answer.
3Betting the turn is valid -- but does not guarantee winning the pot.
Just calling the turn is also valid.
I don't think folding is an option.

be at peace,
