Bet Draws, Don’t Bluff Rivers

The title says it all. Villain misplayed this hand by not betting his open ended straight draw at the Flop. He wanted to build the pot, just in case he hit the straight. Instead he gives me a free card and I jump at the chance to bet my flush draw at the Turn. A pair of Aces on the River with a weak kicker is nothing to get excited about. But, it may win. Easy decision. Check/Call Modest Bet. Check/Fold Big Bet. Villain makes his second mistake by bluffing the River with a modest bet. I never bluff Rivers. Before the hole cards were dealt, I had already checked the sitting out next hand option because it was time for bed. This was a nice way to end the night.

Honestly, this isn't a great spot for him to bet on flop multiway. His position sucks being that he is OOP to the BTN and he should be folding if raised by either you or BTN on this flop.

In a heads up spot, betting is much better, especially if he was IP.

As far as your play goes, I like your line. Leading river here can lead to problems so check/calling seems best. WP

Seems well played indeed. On river you have a bluff catcher and is tough to get action of weaker hands if you bet the river.

To be clear, I was curious if others agree that you should almost always bet your draws and never engage in risky River bluffs. If OOP, I may not bet draws if I believe a following player will bet.
