Poor bet on the turn which induces a shove?

Check back is most likely better, but if you think a bet to like half pot could be a move that worked well against him it's not to bad. It didn't worked out this time.

you have 2 main options with JTs

1. bet/fold Turn
2. check Turn and bluff River

J-high is not strong enough to showdown for sure. SO the question boils down to whether betting turn or river is better (assuming you are unimproved)

betting the turn exposes you to a check/raise as you just saw here. with that said i usually take this as a default line, because most players rarely check/raise the Turn in these spots. the higher you go, the more you need to start checking here sometimes.

checking the turn counters aggressive check/raises, which would in turn force him to bet more often himself. it also allows honest players to "reveal" the strength of their hand by checking Turn AND river before you bet.

On the flipside, betting turn allows you to build the pot and set it up for a river shove (which could be for value if you improve, or a bigger bluff if you did not improve).

Conclusion:
-most players don't check/raise the turn enough at lower stakes
-if i had to put in 1 bet, I prefer putting it in on the turn and that gives me the ability to go for a 3rd street of value on the river if i do improve

I think this is a good play, like many other good plays I once made in a $265 Knock-Out Tournament on pokerstars, it had $50 bounty and I collected a few, five, maybe six, not sure, for a total of $250 prizes, or $300, because I bubbled the $265 KO tournament.

I think it's played fine.

What do you think about raising flop? We are throwing him out of better hands for sure, and we can x back turn to see the river and realise our equity against his better range at this point. Raise would cost us probably the same amount of bb as betting turn, but that way we can see one more card and the effect is the same, we are making him fold his cards that missed flop, but are better than ours at showdown

Hi, I think you played this hand great. Average villain is folding to much to turn float bets even in 3bet pots, so it's an auto profit spot generally. Of course if we have reads on opponent then that may change I checked my database on pokertracker, and it seems like about 46% fold to turn float bet in 3bet pots at NL5, so 1/2 pot to 60% should be good. Also with the equity we have I think it's a mandatory float bet. If villain calls I would most likely shove the river unimproved. It's probably the worst hand we could have in our range at this point and is never winning at showdown. It's probably not an autoprofit spot, so I select the worst hands that I might have. If I had something like an ace high flush draw in this situation, I may check the river unimproved so I'm not bluffing the river too much, also there is a small chance we could beat busted draws like JT.

In general, I would have played this hand the same, great fold and good job. Opponents don't fold very much to flop raises in 3bet pots, so I would avoid that. Also its reduces the opportunity to bluff profitably on later streets.
