Without any info on the villain in this hand this is a tricky spot on the turn.
Read less I would call with in mind some villains could over play top pair.

I folded thinking that he looks strong doing that vs 2 players in a 3way pot

That's true for sure. Normally you should be beat most of the time, but if villain plays top pair like this a call should be profitable I think.
