Scenario: in a 1/2 game in my local poker room.
Me: 380$ stack. HJ about 600$ stack. buyin- 100-300 Min-Max.
Me in CO with JJ. I reraised to 30$ from 10$ -- UTG2 and HJ called.
Flop: 355 rainbow, both checked, i bet 35$( thinking its unlikely any of them have 5s in this spot) UTG2 folded, but HJ called my 35$ bet.
Turn: 8-3558-two spade on the board now. Hj checked to me, when he called my 35$ bet on the flop, i put him on AQ AJ KQ or small pair TT 99 77, thinking maybe he doesnt believe me, that im bluffing. Considering the possibility he could have 5s, like A5 suited, i bet small, 45$.
He check-raised me to 100$. Now, i couldnt really fold for 55$ more, considering the possibility that he could also be bluffing here, and also i could still hit J-full house on the river, so i called 55$ more.
River: 9-35589 rainbow. He checked to me, i checked back. He showed 45Heart suited. He was either trying to trick me to shove All in on the river or that he think i could also have A5 suited in this spot.
His check on the river end up saving me some money, IF he has shove All in on river, the chance of me calling or folding is pretty much 50-50 in this kind of spot, dependent on the kind of opponent.
Information: the info i had on the HJ at the time is that hes a tight player. Thats why i didnt really put him on 5s.
So i end up losing a big chunk of my stack, 165 from 380.
First, what do you guys think of my play in this scenario ? my mistakes, possible improvements ? Any advices is appreciated.
Secondly, how do i reduce variance and losses in this kind of tricky scenarios ? i really dont want to lose all of my stack in this kind of scenarios.
Thirdly, in this kind of scenario, if my opponent happen to be a lose maniac, i think theres a huge chance that he would try to bluff me, because he know i reraised big preflop that i must have AA KK QQ AK, and that on 355 board he has range advantage over me.
SO against a lose maniac in this kind of scenarios that is likely going to bluff you, what is the optimal play ?
