There isnt a number you should be aiming for you play however many you feel comfertable with play 1 table a time if thats all you can manage, what other people do shouldnt be a factor in your game

I can play 12-15 without losing focus and making terrible decisions

I play 4-16 depending how i feel. Just slowly add more as you go along, no need to aim for any ammount. It all depends how comfortable you are playing them.
