Wrath of the Berserker mit 100% DMG.

Surviving Hell and Beyond as a Barbarian

Welcome to my high level barbarian guide. While browsing the forums, both on B.net and here at JSP, I noticed a lot of barbarians having trouble and asking for advice about playing through nightmare, hell, and beyond. I am currently a level 55 Barb well on my way to 60 (plan to hit it tomorrow!) about halfway through Hell difficulty. That being said, take this with a grain of salt. I do not claim to know it all, in fact I would say that I know very little, as do most players so far in this game. What I can do though, is tell you what I have learned and hopefully keep you from making the same mistakes that I did. I will do my best to explain my choices. This NOT a "ZOMG HUGE DAMAGE" build, but rather a build that is meant to be well rounded and give you all the tools that you need to make it through NM and Hell difficulty. So, without further delay:

The Build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/barbarian#WhYVik !bVe!aYZcab

Active Skills:
Frenzy with Sidearm: Good fury builder, best single target dps. Single target dps will matter a lot when you get into hell difficulty. I use frenzy instead of Cleave because if the situation calls for aoe (4+ mobs), then I can use whirlwind instead, which is self sustaining for fury at this level on that many mobs.
Whirlwind with Wind Shear: Whirlwind scales up well and does great aoe dmg, and it is self sustaining on 4 or more mobs with wind shear. 3 mobs will not sustain it indefinitely, but you'll probably kill them before you run out of fury. Revenge also will help replenish your fury, and don't forget to use revenge between whirlwinds when it pops!
Ground Stomp with Wrenching Smash: Amazing for pulling in and stunning a large grp. Hit this in the middle of a somewhat spread out group, and go to town with whirlwind/revenge.
Revenge with Provocation: This is our bread and butter, it's what keeps us alive and it does a nice burst of dps to boot. Without this, we would die very quickly. *Before level 52, use the "Vengeance is Mine" Rune instead.
Battle Rage with Marauders Rage: 30% boost to dps, period, what's not to like?
War Cry with Invigorate: 20% armor, 10% hp, and a very nice heal over time that is on you 100% of the time, plus it gives some free rage when used. It also buffs your entire party with armor/hp/hots. Later on, it will give you 50% resistance. Incredibly good.

Passive Skills:
Nerves of Steel: Extra armor = to the amount of vitality you have. I'll get into why I pick this later on.
Tough As Nails: More Armor. 25% more. You'll need all the damage reduction you can get in Hell, trust me.
Superstition: 20% Elemental damage reduction, and chance to gain 3 fury per attack taken (ranged or magic). You will not have anywhere near enough resist in NM/Hell. You'll need this.

I sacrifice my "ultimate" abilities (earthquake, call of the ancients, wrath of the berserker) here because I prefer having a more sustainable build that has tools that are always in use, versus an ability that I will use once every 1 or 2 minutes and lasts only 10-20 seconds. They have their uses and I admit to using them as a crutch earlier on, but in later game play I feel other abilities serve better. I know a lot of you are saying right now "why doesn't he take bloodthirst, 3% life leech is awesome!". Well, to put it simply, life leech is basically the same thing as damage mitigation. Rather than avoiding damage, you leech some of it back from your attacks. Unfortunately, in Hell difficulty, even if you get quite a bit of leech (say 2.7% on weapon with a nice weapon, 3% from Bloodthirst, hell even some leech on your belt), it is not going to come anywhere near close to making up for the damage you take, ESPECIALLY from magic. The heals you get from Revenge with Provocation rune are far, far more potent than the passive leeching you will do from bloodthirst. Every passive ability listed here helps to mitigate damage taken, and does so in my opinion better than a 3% leech passive. Please note however, I am NOT saying don't get life leech!!! By all means, please do. Getting some life leech and/or life on hit on your weapon is essential. For bosses, I switch out Whirlwind for Rend with Bloodlust if I need heals, or Mighty Hammer with Smash (270% weapon damage) for hard hitting single target damage.

Gear for this build:
You will want to stack Armor, Vit, Str, and Magical Resistance with this build. High damage reduction is essential to living through NM and Hell difficulty, thus the armor and resistance. Vit increases your health pool... a LOT. You will be surprised how much a few amethysts go towards boosting your hp. We want very high hp for 2 reasons: #1, the heal from Revenge, heals us for a percentage of our max hp. The higher our hp is, the better the heal, the more efficient Revenge heals become, and the higher our chances of surviving a mob of elites beating on us becomes by healing ourselves with Revenge. #2, our Passive Skill, Nerves of Steel gives us extra armor = to our vitality, which can stack up very quickly. With decent Vit, armor, and the passive skills listed, you could easily be looking at 65-70% damage reduction. You can check this by hovering over your Armor stat on your char sheet. More hp is always good also. Finally, we want strength because it boost all damage we do by 1% per point of str. So when you look for gear, look for those 4 stats: Armor, Vit, Str, and Magical Resistance. In the AH, set your stat search to look for vit, str, and magical resist all, and sort by highest armor. Be aware that resist all is very rare on gear, and you may be better off looking for pieces that have individual resistances (cold resist, arcane resist etc) rather than resist all. Also be aware that this kind of gear tends to be on the pricey side. If you have to choose, Vit and Armor should be prioritized. You may also see (rarely) pure damage reduction on an item (physical damage taken reduced by x%). If you do, and you can afford it, go for it.

For your weapon, you will be using a 1her most likely (armor form shield and blocking chance is too good to pass up while undergeared and going through hell in my opinion). You will want above all, high damage, Life Steal %, + Life on hit, and +Vit and/or Str. A weapon with all of these stats that is on the higher end of dps for that level will sell for a LOT.

This should go without mentioning but I am going to anyway. Spend some time learning the AH. See what sells high, what sells low, and what a "good" rare is, not just for your class, but for others as well. I found a bow at lvl ~40 that sold for 250k, which helped me gear myself out. Gems, artisan pages/tomes and many other items, some that you might not expect, sell quite well.

Thank you for taking the time to read my guide. This build is what I have found to be most effective in NM and Hell difficulty for higher levels (44+). This is just my opinion and I welcome constructive criticism, suggestions, and questions. Even with all of the "defensive" traits of this build, you will still likely die a few times in Hell. It's hard.

If this has helped you, please feel free to donate me some Forum Gold.
