stakes climbing

Hi,
I have some questions for experienced players. You don't have to answer all the questions ^^

1. What was your climbing at the stakes where you are?
2. What security do you use as a buy-in?
3. How long did it take you to climb between the different stakes?
4. Did you jump over any stakes?
5. Did you pay the buy-in to your account in the process?
6. Did you go down to lower stakes?

Especially interesting for cash games.

Hello!

1) Originally started playing on NL2 and my highest limit was NL50 (which I didn't beat).
Atm I'm starting from scratch and I'm starting from NL10.

2) I have very low BRM which I don't recommend to people starting out. Here you also have to consider the following:
- how many tables are you playing (4 tables is very different from 1 tabling, when tilt comes the first scenario can demoralize you quite hard)
- your style of play (gambalaro type of player or more solid)

My recommendation regarding BRM is to use min 25BI but better is around 40BI for next limit.

3) Not important information. Never compare yourself to others you won't gain anything from it. You'll just get more pressure that you "must" do something in that period.
Have in mind that 1 month means for someone 10k hands for somebody else 100k hands. For instance I will play around 6k hands per month which is nothing but that is all the time I have for poker.

4) Never. Don't think about it. Even if you win mtt, don't go playing higher limits just because you have that many BI. Step by step.

5) Nope. Not a good idea. It's never just once:f_confused:

6) Several times. The learning curve is meant to be like that. You go one step ahead and then 2 steps back. But on this road you're gaining experience and more importantly self-confidence. With time you don't see stepping down as a failure your just see it as a challenge to prove you belong in the higher league.

Here are my few thoughts...

Create a plan.
Make a commitment to play x days for y hours.
Think only about next limit.
Don't be result oriented.
Think about your play.
Work on your game (that doesn't mean 15 different things at the time, be good at 2-3 things).
Be patient.
Enjoy playing.

Good luck!:f_thumbsup:

Thank you for your answer. I know that comparing to others is usually not good, but I'm curious.

I currently play on 4 tables on 2NL. I think I'm doing quite well. After 21k hands over 20.83 bb/100h. I wonder when I should move to higher stakes. There are a lot of weak players on 2NL. I assume the same on 5NL and 10NL. That's why I don't want to waste time playing with the weaker players. Maybe by adopting bad habits.

I'm thinking about Tankroll bankroll management. It sounds very good, but is it?

Congrats on good winrate. :f_biggrin:
You're not wasting your time you're gaining experience. 20k hands is good example but that doesn't mean you're crushing NL5 or NL10.
The most important thing is bankroll. For example if your BR would be $373, you playing NL2 would not be the best move. Choose the BRM that you're comfortable with and follow it.

Everything general was said by yaxkukmian very well. Like BRM, not jumping over stakes or that progress of others is not important. So here is my experience.

1) I am now back to NL2 after 5 years but in 2015 I was very comfortable in NL25. Then a combination of a full time job and government restrictions came so I quit. but I climbed steadily from NL2 to NL25. There is no rush. Everybody has their pace.

2) I used solid 25BI with a 5BI stop loss shot bankroll management. So I did a shot at a higher stake with 25BIs in my bankroll and went back after losing 5BIs. And repeat. 25BIs is also what you will find here in the PSGY articles as a safe BRM for NLHE.

3) Not important and I dont even remember. But I did it several times. There was some quitting every now and then. But I never got higher than NL25 and I have also never lost my BR.

4) Never and I dont recommend it either. Every stake plays a little different and there is also very huge difference between for instance NL10 and NL25. There are more regs, they play more aggressive, defend their blinds, bluff more, float etc. So take one step at a time, study slowly but steadily and you will climb up.

5) Not sure what you mean. Maybe cash out part of your bankroll to your bank account? If so, then I wouldnt do it unless you are at a stake which makes you some decent money every month. It should be a priority for you to build your bankroll and beat you current stakes.

6) Dont remember actually but I think I was stuck between NL10 and NL25 for a while. Then all of a sudden I got the grasp of it and started to beat NL25. And then I was forced to quit

So good luck and if you need anything else, dont hesitate to ask. :f_drink:

Thank you for your answer!

In 5 point i meant, did you add funds to your account while playing? For example, you have fallen below a certain amount and added to maintain BI. I guess you're going down to lower rates then.

Ok I see. The answer is still no for the same reason. You want to move up the stakes because you build your bankroll as a result of you beating your current stake. Not because you boosted it with other money. You might as well send 10k dollars and go to NL200 right away. But that wouldnt work probably. If shooting a higher stake does not work out, just go down, work on your game and repeat later.
