Hi there!

Here's a hand from a recent tourney I played 11$ FR 7.5Kgntd @ stars.
Tourney's aren't my main game, playing NL BSS mostly, but I play an MTT here and there especially mornings...for variety and practice.
I am wondering, was this call kinda rushed or not? I did have 13outs but was it too marginal this early in tournament ?

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, 11 Tournament, 15/30 Blinds (9 handed) - Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

Hero (Button) (t3485)
SB (t4110)
BB (t4095)
UTG (t2765)
MP (t1466)
CO (t3633)
(dunno why 3more players are missing) Hand converter at flopturnriver reported it as 6max but it was 9max...
And yeah, PS converter doesn't work for tourneys right ?
Would you recommend a good converter to use, seems this one ok ?

Hero's M: 77.44

Preflop: Hero is Button with 10, 9
1 fold, MP calls t30, 1 fold, Hero bets t150, 2 folds, MP calls t120

Flop: (t345) 5, K, J (2 players)
MP checks, Hero bets t180, MP raises to t1316 (All-In), Hero calls t1136

Turn: (t2977) 2 (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: (t2977) 2 (2 players, 1 all-in)

Total pot: t2977

Thnx for all ur advice guys, you rock
Cheers :f_love:

not prefect but your getting good odds to call this & still with stck of chips left

early in tourneys chances are you not got any reads on this player & if blinds are 5/10mins then that would affect decision but think I would call this

I use deucescracked one, the only one that seems to work.

I'm not raising preflop, calling is better imo.

As played, I think you can bet more on flop (225) and yeah, call the shove.

I also think it is better to limp behind preflop. On the flop you have a lot of equity against his range so I think you can't fold.

its a 11$ mtt ... he will call hole range against nur iso-raise

with good postflop skills its ok to isoraise

I don't understand why he should call the shove. Can someone please help me with that? I am feeling like a total noob.

He is calling 1136 for a total end pot of 2977, that means his pot odds are 38%.
In the best case scenario if he is up against top pair, he has 48% chances of winning.

On a cash game i could understand a call because his hand odds are slightly bigger than the pot odds (48% to 38%), but on a tournament is it wise to risk 1/3 of the stack with such close odds?
Isn´t a lost chip worth more than a won chip on tournaments?

10% is not "slightly bigger"

you are right that in tournaments a chip lost is worth more than a chip won , but in a massive mtt you can take more risks to gain chips than in a sit and go on the early stages.

So what you mean is that on a massive MTT you should chase draws on early phases as oposed to the SnG's?

in mtt u need to accumulate stack, so u can later use that stack when blinds get bigger to abuse/push around people and be able to steal blinds, so if u r getting right pot odds (right prize) for ur hand draw/u shouldn't fold...
chips won and chips lost in early blind levels have same value,
when u have deep stacks (like more the 70BB) the play is just like a cash game (pot eq, pot odds etc), and if u bust early u can always start new mtt cos u didnt invested much time imo

getting the right price is not chasing

Thanks for your answers and for the detailed explanation about the diference between SnG and MTT.

I use to play MTT as conservatively as I play SnGs and never invest a large amount of my stack on draws, just like it says on the strategy articles for the SnGs (I am mostly a SnG player).

Unfortunately the articles from MTTs dont cover this aspect. How much of the stack is it correct to invest on draws on the early phase of a MTT?

Acordingly to your answers, I assume that one can invest all the stack early on the MTT whenever "hand odds" are equal or bigger than "pot odds", right?

:f_thumbsup: combine that with rAI to add fold EQ as well _thumbsup:

ex. if u have like 60%-120% stack vs pot ratio left on turn if u call on flop is better to go AI on flop to add some fold eq

- flop 9c8h3d
- pot 500
- u have 1200 with JhTh
- villain bet like 300-350
->best play imo is to raise AI
cos if u call pot will be like 1100-1300 and u have only 900-850 behind, so u got only 1 decision to shove or fold on flop , i go for a shove ;)

tks

I have noticed that the MTT strategy presented on PokerStrategy is a very conservative one, best suited for beginers as they say.

I started playing also cash games to improve my game skills for the early phase of MTTs and to be able to use a big stack more efectively when i get it on a MTT.

On a 11$ deepstacks MTT.

Maybe I have pushed this way too far on this hand, but like the example discussed above in this thread, I have "hand odds">"pot odds" if i am against a top pair, and I made a very big mistake if i am against 2 pairs or a set.

What do you think of this shove? Maybe should have raised pre-flop if i intended to play a draw so agressively?

after u lead on flop its ugly folding is out of Q i dont mind shoving but i prefer check/raise on flop (to get dead money into the pot), bet 70% pot on turn shove on most rivers

I think iso'ing pre is fine, we have a reasonable hand, good playability, good EQ vs his range rly (think about it vs his range we are probably not doing so bad) and more importantly we have position & skill advantage aswell as taking initiative. No brainer for me. I didn't calc the odds but someone said you were 10% of the odds you needed? For me at this stage its definitely a call, I like to build chips, I mean think about it how often do we flip in a tourny anyway? We arn't considering a prize increase or anything at this stage so I think its fine.
