Hey!

There is not much to say for today. My mentality is quite f****ed at this moment. Positive results are missing, I am grinding slightly minus for weeks now. My confidence dropped again, as well as my motivation did. But somehow my frustration keeps me going on. There is no escape right now.

My mindset is THE one thing that is blocking me towards success. It is impossible to come to the next level without investing in my mind, and that EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Current Mental Success Blockers:

1) Desperation & Running Bad Tilt
2) Extreme results-orientedness / huge influence on my mood
-> accumulated emotion over time / expecting to lose / connecting
independent events subconsciously
3) Wrong optimism (justifying bad plays with variance).

Main Lesson of the Day

Working on my mindset EVERY day is mandatory.

It is quite logical that I feel how I feel. I want to achieve big things in poker, but as my BR drops more and more it hurts. If that continues I am f0cked, so I have to work harder again, put in more effort, to reach a new level, get my mental game under control and take massive steps in my game.

So said, I finished my second mental HH regarding desperation tilt. There are three main things I HAVE to believe: (credits to Vorpal2F)

:diamond: The Game is fair: Equal to all players
:diamond: Laws of Mathematics governs the long-term outcome
:diamond: I HAVE the ability to be - or become - a winning player

The great thing about those points is that believing them deeply does not allow me anymore to take off responsibility and give iPoker fault for a bad run. Variance is what it is, it does what it does, and most important - it is not changeable!

I also changed my hand tags and created 4 new ones:

 Bad Beat
 Setup
 Big Pot
 Small Pot

I am marking hands during the session (no matter if I won or lost the hand) as one of these. This gives me more oversight about variance and its impact on BOTH sides: Bad and Good.

Some Hands

1) Villain is a recreational player. Preflop I 3bet KJ as a semibluff vs the reg. I don't like calling here without having any opportunity postflop, especially not for a minraise, giving the fish odds to call any2.

However, he calls, the reg folds. I could have cbet bigger since he would prbly call any Q :spade: + .

Turn: I bet small vs worse Kx. What do you think about the sizing? Why would you bet bigger?

Villain again is a fish. I cbet (maybe a bit small) with second pair since there are quite some draws possible. Now he donks the turn really small. No reason to fold with second pair. On the river any draw apart from weird twopair combo's are busto. Though he bets 1/2 pot. I fold, maybe its better to call here for two reasons: We get a fair price, AND we can collect a cheap read on villain.

Nothing special to tell today. Was just driving home and played a stupid tilt session. In the evening I had a date, we were going into a bar I had worked before I left Germany. Was really fun to see my old barmates again and joke around about old times. :) Cocktails were amazing as always. You have to check out "Henry's" in Hannover, if you are there one time.

Thanks bro!

a) because I received a very good deal there
b) I usually only play the casual cash tables, but yeah I used to play a lot of zoom in the past. Since it is not THAT beneficial for my learning process I rather focus on the normal tables.

Tilt Session Reflection

Regarding Mental Game, I am starting the approach to review my sessions, not only for strategic mistakes, but also for mental flaws occurring during certain situations.

You are all invited to discuss the following hands. :)

1)
We hold KJo in the SB, BU openraises. he folds in general 83% to 3bets. No sample in the BU. He can hold a range of 77-JJ(QQ), 89s+, JTs+, QJs+, KTs+, ATs+, AJo+ - seems a bit wide, but I recently have observed people calling especially to my 3bets more often than the stats say.

Flop comes perfect, I cbet small (as I would do it with all my bluffs also) to give him the chance to float light, ofc turn is a c/c - on the River our hand is kind of face up as either a midpair, or a weak king. So I assumed he would shove the river light  - Only problem is, I did not attend his river AF, which is 0. He can ofc only rep AK, a Set, and a BD Flush, but he probably has it most of the time.

2)
A good example of entitlement tilt:
We raise the SB limper with QJs, flop comes decent, now he POTs into us. No reason to fold with a ton of outs. Raise and get it in would be definitely overplayed, so I just make the call. Turn gives us twopair, he POTs again, still no reason to fold. Now he shoves the river on a blank. Pretty weird.. I don't think my play is totally wrong, but though I doubt a bit he would ship with worse than our hand.

My thought process:
"Yeah, well he is fish. He can do random stuff, SNAPcall."

Though, I did not have a single read on him that he would be a big strategic retard. And with his 26/0 I should better assume more passivity from him.

Flop and turn is never foldable since we should have sick implieds if we hit our FH or the flush on the river. On the river it is hardly to believe that he is betting A2 that huge, and AK would rather tend to c/c.

3)
Overrating bluffing-frequencies:
Villain is a pretty loose reg, he opens around 26% from MP. ATs in this case is too strong to 3bet, so I just call assuming him having some worse Ax in his range, and the hand plays decent in position as a suited connector as well.

I think on the turn its rather a fold, because people on this limit usually do not semibluff this big, and especially on a Ahigh board its more unlikely that they barrell off light, or that big with worse Ax. Only thing that makes sense and what we have beat is a flushdraw or 89... Worse Ax would rather check the turn or bet smaller.

4.1)
Villain is a pretty loose reg. He barreled 2/2 times the turn. In retrospective, my play was bad. I called off 3 streets overestimating his bluffing-frequencies, only looking at his loose stats and his AF of 6/inf/inf. This runout was perfect for a 3barrell bluff and especially the Q :diamond: completes a whole bunch of backdoordraws, but as said, people on NL20 in general do not bluff the river very often. Though, I called... he showed up with 77 turned into a bluff.

Same Villain as before.
Preflop is totally standard. Him having a wide range, I call the flop cbet. Weird thing is that he potcbets this time whereas he made it 3/4 the hand before. But taking the read of the hand before I rather tend towards calling, 88 is still ahead against his overall cbetting range. The turn then is a bit tricky:
a) Why should he bluff this turn after us having him seen triple-barrell bluffing before?
b) Would he cbet sth worse than our hand (like 66-77)?

I think both questions should be easily be answered by a) no reason, after knowing that I'm the biggest callingstation of all times, and b) no.

--> Turnfold = maxEV

After calling the turn, though, folding the river on that card would be a big logical mistake.

I am really tired right now to write a wall of text or something.

All I can say is that the decision to become a Pro came today. I was doubting to habe a study break of one year just to become a poker professional. Now it's set in stone. :)

What did I accomplish today?

- Coaching with SF: Set a really specific SMART goal for this week.
(-> work mainly on entitlement tilt)
- made up two frameworks for Warmup & Cooldown Routines
- played 4 Sessions and applied those frameworks, therefore
worked on improving from session to session, marked out hands, reviewed
some logical/mental mistakes in my game, and made up improvements.
- did some meditation

What could have been better?
- my concentration (extended my playing times, did not eat enough before
any session)
- application of improvements (maybe I write down too many things at the same time?)

Tomorrow I will use the word document about every session from today to recognize the most hurting flaws in my game, connect them with my mental game issues, and start with the latter. After it I will look for some strategic content regarding major mistakes.

Main Lesson of The Day

Do not overextend your playing times. 45-60 minutes are enough. After it my concentration will just go down. -> I need to stick to all my session goals!

Before you start reading, be aware that the following post isn't really about poker, but about personal development and some epiphanies from last night.

Yesterday we were out.

In the beginning my state was awesome! I was cheering all the time, already dancing in front of the club, going in, drinking something. After a while I accidently spilled water over my pants so that it 1:1 looked like I have peed myself. So.. I was going up to a friend's female acquaintance to ask her: "Hey, can you see that I peed in my pants?" whilst pointing on my balls. I don't know why, she felt harassed  After I got to know that she really took it seriously and wanted me to stay away from her, I tried to explain it. She really thought I'm a huge weirdo Somehow all this was splashing on my confidence and I got stuck after it. I freezed. Even when a cute girl was dancing really close to me and was even touching my hand "accidentally" I did not do anything, caught in negative thoughts about the evening and past failures. I realized some significant things:

1) I often define myself by feedback of other people. If people are nice to me, I keep cheering, having fun and stuff. When they are not, I believe it (for example the weirdo thing) and start feeling bad whereas nothing actually changed with me. I just wanted to amuse myself, and this amusement turned into severity...
Similarity to poker:
Getting mentally "ill" having a downswing and start tilting, not being in the moment.

2) I become another person talking to strangers, especially to girls. I am not myself, and not congruent at all. I am TRYING to make a good impression whereas it would make much more sense to just spit out the first things that come into my mind and get the attitude: If you like me, it's cool! If not, then go f*** yourself. (outcome dependence)

3) My confidence rises and lowers with accomplishments and failures. If I suck in poker and success doesn't show up (like it is now), I feel bad about myself and question my worth and values. I display it in other life areas. What I need is core confidence (non-situational and permanent).
In Poker it is quite the same. If results are great, I feel awesome about my game and do not see any negatives, whereas if I have a few losing sessions in a row it is like I was sent to poker hell, and my fate is to be a BE/slightly losing player forever.

I started to solve these issues by creating some dogmas.

a) I am unfolding my real me everytime, everywhere, and to every human being.
b) I define myself only by my values. Even if I lose everything I have, I will always be the same guy.
c) I can achieve everything what I want, as long as I work for it to a sufficient extent.
d) Failures are the best that can ever happen to me, because they allow me to grow and they show up better ways to master my life.
e) No matter how bad it goes, a solution is what always exists.

This is certainly not the end, I keep you updated about this when I figure out more things to do.

Poker

I got visit from a friend who travelled about 15 hours by bus to my place. He plays micro SNGs and today we were grinding whole day long. I put some work into my mental game, but not enough.

As you may noticed I changed the blog title and inserted "(and calls)" into the former one. Somehow I became a huge calling station and wasted around 3 Buyins today by calling way too much, especially on the river. Will post some examples tomorrow. To solve this problem, I would have to get those hands and estimate ranges on every street to fucking get this thing disappear since it really eats my winnings... Otherwise I play quite solid over the last couple of days.

Analysis

I am posting now 5 of the hands from yesterday and try to include a small range analysis to everyone. Let's go.

1) http://weaktight.com/6045245

Villain plays a tight TAG style of 15/10 w/ 80% ft3bet. AKo though is ofc a 3bet for value. I could have made it bigger preflop oop.
He calls, we hit the flop that comes monotone, and we flop TPTK. On the first sight there is no way out. Though his flopraisingrange >>> our hand. I estimate it to be a) some flopped flushs with suited broadways he decides to call to our small reraise, b) Sets, and AK, and c) some Ahigh flushdraws (AsQx/AsJx).

Board: K♠8♠6♠
       Equity     Win     Tie
MP2    24.45%  14.74%   9.72% { AcKd }
MP3    75.55%  65.83%   9.72% { KK+, 88, 66, AKs, AsQs, KsQs, AsJs, KsJs, QsJs, AsTs, KsTs, QsTs, JsTs, Ts9s, AKo, AsQd, AsQh, AsQc, AsJd, AsJh, AsJc }

2) http://weaktight.com/6045251

Villain plays 23/17 w/ a 3bet percentage of 13% (3/8 times vs CO, 0/16 times from the BB). Expecting his 3bet range can be wider I decide to play TT in position. He cbets, usual call on the flop I guess. On the Turn my thought process was.. "ok.. if I bet here.. what worse calls me? He probably has A high most of the time or some other weird crap.. I just check back and call any overcard that apart from an Ace" - so I check. River comes a Q. He bets half pot and I levelled myself... stupid situation!! He CAN have it, but he also CANNOT have it. Since we don't know his bluff frequencies in this spot + how often he 3bets in those positions with crap, the Proposal for the turn: Just bet sth like $3,00 and take the fruits as they hang low.

3) http://weaktight.com/6045259

It's the same villain from 1).
Preflop its a standard call for me with KJs since it plays very well in position and multiway. We flop TP2ndK. Since both players check to me, and the CO is fullstacked I don't expect to get 3 streets of value. So I check the flop in order to bet the turn and the river, because I expect to get a fold right away most of the time. Turn comes a :spade: which CAN give the initial aggressor a flushdraw. He bets out half pot (would only make sense with a flushdraw or TT -> btw most of the time he bets out TT right away on the flop). My thought process was to call, and get more value from him when draws bust or he picks up a K or sth... usually that does not make sense. NL20 Players are too passive (especially on Speed Poker) to bluff the river on this occasion (what is MY perceived range?? Flushdraws, Jx, TT, 9x, slowplay with a set).
To get more value, in this case, I should have raised the turn to sth like $4. Like this I level myself again on the river.. can he have it now? how like it is that he is purebluffing in this spot? yada yada... If the flushcard came after a turnraise, and he bets out, it should be a fold then.. AS played: I don't know why I called, maybe because I want to win hands so badly still.

4) AQo in 3bet pot - http://weaktight.com/6045273

Villain plays 18/18, 3bet 2/12 times, 26hands, so no big sample. Preflop it is a standard call unless he call superwide to 4bets. Since people cbet way too much in 3bet pots, I usually call here having still outs on my overcards and being ahead vs sth like AT-AJ, random Axs, KQ/KJ, but behind vs TT+. On The Turn there is no reason to bet this time since he would not call with worse.

River then is a fold. I mean WHAT can he bluff with? Can he expect us folding often enough? Our perceived range is AQ-AK, 9x, 77-JJ. We always have a bluffcatcher here. Taking the assumption that people are generally quite honest on the river, there is no reason at all to call on a total blank (apart for his flushdraws).

5) KQ on the river vs fish http://weaktight.com/6045283

This guy doesn't seem to be the dude who is calling any2 preflop. He plays 25/6 on 16 hands. Preflop, flop, and turn are fine I think. On the river we have to re-evaluate: the 8 completes only 9T, AT/AQ would have raised preflop. I can't imagine that he is betting weaker Kx for value, so It's proobably better to fold here.

Last night I played too long. Wasn't chasing winnings but continued to play until 5am because I was running so good and expected to continue my run. Of course I dropped in winnings and ended up 50bb up

However, I made some huge improvements today. I read a cool post in the German forums (credits to zoty79). He wrote that he fought his callingstation style by switching his focus. People usually tend to focus too much on spots where they can herocall, and often the ego does not want to get bluffed. So they do stupid plays, lose more on calldowns than they win with valuebetting, and eventually don't know what they are doing wrong. The solution to this is, to consciously search for spots where u can fold!!! Sounds easy, right?

This connects with the phenomenon of hate-losing tilt. When u want to find spots where u can fold, it is easier to let your opponents "win" more hands.

I only had one play today where I was overplaying my hand:

Villain lost a huge pot before in which he bet/called his 2nd pair and paid off the aces of a regular. I assumed him being fairly weak in this spot (though I only hold my mid-bottom range) and shoved over his nut-line c/c c/r.

A spot that occurs suuuuuper often:
We call in the BB, the BU checks the flop behind and calls the turn, mostly with sth like 2nd pair, Ahigh, or a very weak toppair (capped in 100% of the cases). So I decided to overbet the river to get his SD value to fold representing JT+. He calls with 2nd pair. What do we learn? Try to overbet more in those spots when u have a hand! He btw had a WTSD of 34.

It's just insane. I know it is stupid to complain about stuff, so I let it be.

To say it more objectively, yesterday evening a friend came by while I was grinding, and he stayed here and I just continued playing, and of course was not playing my A-Game at all. I also shotted NL50 with my $700 BR and dropped 4 Stacks in the end. Poker has me under its control right now whereas it should be rather the opposite. My mental game on the other hand is quite solid right now, compared to before.

Though, it's really questionable if I will ever be successful without finally implementing strict playing times and always holding my rules (session length, table number, BRM). I want to be professionally be playing poker. What I do right now isn't professional at all, its SHIT. Stupid B.S. Good thing is that I take on 100% responsibility for that, and I know I can change it... wish me luck. _evil:

keep ya head up, bro. if you work hard on it, you can make it. somewhere i read that it is really helpful always and especially in stressful situations to ask yourself "would the person i want to become do xyz?" that means in your case: "would a professional poker play do xyz"?

i tried to implement this into my game, i did it for a few days but quit doing it (i dont know why, but i want to implement it again). the time i did it, i (maybe subjectively) did better decision (no matter what: ingame decisions, decision to analyse instead of grinding, decision to eat certain food, etc.)

maybe it might help you, too.

you can become whatever you want, its just a question of time and your attitude/approach to it. you know what to do, so... DO IT!

best of luck and success!!! _love:

Hey bro! Thanks for the cool tip and of course the whole bunch of nice words. there aren't many people out there who are that supportive as u are. Big thanks and appreciation! _love:

Guess its applicable to many life areas, not merely to poker. :)) cool stuff! Asking the right questions is always a good idea.

Why did you stop? If it works, pick it up again. _biggrin:

Gonna tell you how it went with me.

26.08.2013

Today I slept long, woke up and felt pretty exhausted over the day. Also, I was showing my friend Hannover at daytime. We were having alot of fun together and did some stuff I can't write in this blog :)

Pokerwise, today I did not feel at all hitting the tables. I was thinking FML not again, better take a day off and come back tomorrow when my mind isn't that distressed anymore.

To structure my life better again though, I installed (to recommendation of my friend) a really awesome program called "thinking rock". You should check it out. I already started to create a project about my gambling behaviors, and how to solve them.

Further, I started speed reading and read some more out of Ramit Sethi's book "I will teach you to be rich" - first chapter is about credit cards.. will ASK SF for what I should need this :-D

Wish you a good night, this is Day 56 btw, four days to go!

I'm gonna record a 45min Livesession today and put it on yt. :)

Ok, I redecided to not do a video but post some spew from today. I forgot how susceptible I am towards high levels of preflop aggression:

I was sitting with the same guy on 3 tables today (wanted to tableselect this tard out, but he followed me ~.~ ). He was frequently 3betting me, I folded almost always, simply because I did not have ahand for a single time. I 4bet him one time as a bluff and he folded. Some hands later I 4bet him again and ended up shoving as he 5bets me.

http://weaktight.com/6054833

I'm not sure if this is the correct play, or if its just pure spew against such a person.

After the session I created a mental hand history called "Ego Tilt" - I hate losing against other regs that outplay me because I do not want to lose my "face". I take things personal very fast and react emotionally to a huuuge extent. I start getting spewy, become way too aggro, and change my winning strategy to "beat" my opponent, and gain revenge....

The first hand, though I created the mental hand history, was the activator for a chain reaction:

http://weaktight.com/6054835
-> my opponent folded around 90% or more to 3bets to this time. When I 3bet him, he calls. Ok. Stupid situation, we flop toppair on a monotone board, Turn comes Q of blanks, I cbet again expecting him to fold his onecard flushdraws and maybe pockets. On the river he now jams into me, and I was like WTF. AQ, flopped flush, or nothing, so I call.

next one:

http://weaktight.com/6054834

Opponent seemed a bit fishy, he rarely folded to 3bets and his vpip and pfr were really high. On the turn I think its a clear valuebet vs. draws he can maybe decide to c/c, he would probably bet a T by himself.

On the river of course: Against what are we valuebetting? I bet/call out of whatever reasons, not wanting to fold my hand because I was so addicted to "win my money back"................................................

Last one:

http://weaktight.com/6054832
After I continued to play and almost went break even again, I called the 3bet of this guy with 77, probably pretty bad call since he folds more than 85% in the SB to steals. However, postflop we are still ahead vs random overs and other stuff. On the turn I decide to turn my hand into a bluff ?( vs Jx. Great discrepancies in my game plan right? I just wanted to win the hand so badly that I decided to shove the river representing the flush or a set. Ofc u have 0 Foldequity on NL20. I'm such a retard.

------------------------------------------

What is it that causes me to do these random things?

Hate-losing (still)
Revenge Tilt (taking things too personally)
Chasing Losses.
Overly huge EGO (don't want to feel bad about myself, assuming I have to win because I'm the better player, my opponents all suck, yada yada)

Gonna work on every single one of them soon, step by step. Can't tell how upset I am right now because my mental game problems caused me more than $100 today whereas I can actually beat these games without them.

Value bet against 95/97/98/T8/T7/77/88/Xd6d and maybe even some stronger Tx: fish don't always bet these. I mean, he didn't c-bet but c/c KQhh here so he must be kind of bad and have a high WTSD.

The min-raise gives you such good odds: you only need to be good 18%. We can discount FH/straights because of his turn play here.

Combos you don't beat: Q9+ (12), Flushes (10 or so).
Combos you do beat: 95/97/98 (12), random spazz (1).

13/35 = 37% equity {J9cc}

So you see, even if he has some FH here (T9 he plays this way for god knows why) it's still a call. Nice hand.

Just "wow"'ed hearing and reading these lyrics from Knuckledust:

"As I make my way through everyday with stress on my head and bills to pay, no matter how hard I break my back It's not my pocket that's getting fat. All this work and no reward, no satisfaction for me. I won't sit back and be ignored and rot in frusration 'till it buries me. If I stand up and speak my mind, they'll try to sever my lifeline. Everything is covered with lies and al they do is wase my time. Now it's my time to take a stand. Get life under conrol before it's out of my hands. I'll push forward and rise above, won't play this game, I've had enough. I'll walk this path, these stones I've laid. I'm wiser now for the mistakes I've made. All the stolen hopes and broken dreams ain't far away as they once seemed. I've made this choice, I won't turn back, I can't lose what I've never had but I'll never know unless I try. I didn't build this to let it die. "

Fits soooooooo perfectly my current life situation :megusta:

Yeah, though I am not that sure if fish really checkraise 9x on a river flushcard. But even if he only raises the half of his 9x combos, its still a call right?

Thanks for evaluation :)
