Would be thankful for an explanation on how to play such spots:

You're being 3-bet by a villain with 3-bet over 10%
Well, I guess 4-bet is normal here
HE CALLS!

Well, I felt in trouble (especially with a missed flop). What would be a "standard" thought process in such spots, both IP and OOP?

a. This hand is strong enough to call so I would do that. 4-bet bluff with weaker hands

b. I think the 4-bet size is a little too large. 2.30-2.50 is fine, people usually enter a 5b or fold mode vs such a size. Of course in this case he still calls such a large 4b which is strange and probably sub-optimal.

c. Why don't you cbet here? Ace high Flop, you have a gutshot. Pretty clear bet IMO.
Surely his range here is not only JJ+/AQ+? If he can have some midpairs and some random suited connectors, a cbet here would be profitable.

And you don't have to bet large. 33% of the pot will suffice. You have plenty of AX in your perceived range when you 4bet so you should get a lot of respect here = plenty of folds.

When you bet 33% pot, you only need 25%+ fold equity to breakeven. Not to mention the fact that you also have a gutshot here and will improve 9% of the time on the turn.
