asymetric ranges, how to defend with weaker range

imo overall we should just over-fold this flop and see it as a correct reaction to negative variance: this is simply an unlucky flop given preflop ranges

yes thats from "gto approximation" theory, and what everybody agrees on in this thread. The question of the thread is, how much % do we overfold. We cant overfold everything besides strong hands (if we have any) because then villian will cbet once and give up, and if we flat hands like bdfd, Ax low PP they are likely going to be -EV calls. I think the alternative is to have only raise range as defend, because so many overcards have a lot of equity, and we can raise PP and strong hands if we have, and if we dont have strong hands i think it is ok to fold 100% range.

and if i take your question more generally, then imo it applies to nearly all or all situations in poker, as it's very rare that 2 opposing ranges are of the exact same strength. so maybe your question is actually just generally questioning balanced GTO range construction: should we really use unexploitable frequencies or should we play overly tight/passive when we have the weaker range an overly aggro/loose when we have the stronger range?

This spots are actually happening very rare. Thats mostly on low boards. On broadway boards there is no problem for weaker range to defend, because there is no so huge disbalance in ranges. But also in general, yes we should play passive when we have weaker range and agro when we have stronger range. E.g. if you have preflop initiative but villians range hits board much better than your range, then you should play passive. Also, if you dont have preflop initiative but your range his board better than villians you should donk and play agro.

ok i can see why you don't get many satisfactory replies/info. you're somewhat hostile/defensive in a lot of your responses.

e.g. about the meaning of asymetry: you just said exactly what i suspected, that it indeed means something different than just one range being stronger than the other. that was my question, and i think it's interesting and important to discuss precisely and clearly.
but then why 'Symmetry is actually used everywhere, but most common in mathematics. It is not only shapes, structure, data as you say.' why are you trying to prove me wrong or attack me or something? i was just trying to understand you. and in fact the points i made about that terminology partly stem from the fact that i studied maths, mathematical logic, set theory etc at university. but i wasn't giving a general definition of how the term is used in all fields, just.... well, you can see what i wrote.

i could further discuss/adress a lot of new points that you brought up, but i'm not going to, as you're not showing the kind of discourse i would want to engage in.

It seems to me GK is not being hostile at all, so lets calm our tits and continue a good debate (if you feel like it).

As I see it an asymmetric range is not so easy to define, because there are many different parameters we can use: EQ, hand type, hand ranking, bet/call/raise potential under different circumstances, portion of parent range, probability of flopping/turning/rivering X or X%, etc. etc. There are many ways to describe parts of a range and a lot of factors that go into it like position, capped/uncapped, elastic/inelastic, vulnerability to X by villain, etc. etc.

Two ranges being asymmetric seems to be the norm, so what's really important is how each hand inside a range plays out against specific parts inside another range. This though is huge pile of work to do and at some point I doubt it's still time-efficient.
But if fewer combos are in play then it becomes very useful and also more fun. We can create mini-games to shrink the workload with wide ranges.

I personally think that the portion of hand types and rankings inside player 1's parent range compared to all sorts of hand types and rankings inside player 2's parent range is a good starting point. It's not overly complicated and we can understand it intuitively which is important.

why are you trying to prove me wrong or attack me or something? i was just trying to understand you.

I was just trying to explain what are symmetric ranges, because you asked. I even provided you a very usefull link, about Internet video where he explains the spots where many good regs make mistakes. And you in the end got insulted because I just wanted to formulated a bit more precise what is the meaning of simmetry?

Hi ETBrooD,

Can you please provide some reference where I can read about this? I am very interested to understand better how to quantify which range is stronger. So far I just knew about comparing average equities, % of strong hands, but now you mentioned many more things which seem important.

Can you please give some example, the best on river with narrow ranges, provide both ranges, and then compare which one and why is stronger range? I think it would be good way to make those things more clear. I am especially interested in cases when hero is playing preflop without initiative, and calling flop and turn and river flush completes, so who will have stroger range in that case, should hero donk, or protect check range becuse villian will fire often.

I didnt undrestand what you mean by this. What is considered to be ranking? is it e.g. top pairs, sets etc? Or is it hand types what I mentioned? And then idea is to compare each pair of hand types? For example, we compare who has stronger sets+ combos, who has stronger top pairs, middle pairs etc?

I won't have time to post examples, though I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out on your own ;)

I didn't claim pot always increases by 2x. I used an example. Depending on different sizings pre we get different odds pre and the pot might increase on avg different vs different villains but its your job to guesstimate what that is.

I understand your reasons for not keeping detail ranges for private coatching (I would do the same), but I think it is no wonder why there are less and less people commenting in NL100+ section lately. Diamond videos coming as often as Christmas, and then very often the content is nothing new or special (only Internet videos are super worth). Coaches answer only how to play single hand (not all, e.g. coach weasel answers me in detail whatever I ask), and I think at level of NL100+ we can hardly benefit from learning by heart how to play single hand, instead of learning how to play ranges and explaining more theory. So I think ps.com is a big failure lately.

Also why would I take you as a coach among other coaches, if I only saw partial answers from you? If you would from time to time provide some ranges, then I could say, ok he has some very good ideas, I like his style, so I will take him as a coach. I am sure that providing a range for single hand is not going to reveal the secret of your strategy. Sorry If I sound rude, but I am already frustrated that I made many posts in advanced sections, and a week ago after long time Internet answered few threads by asking question (so discussion didnt finish and he usually doesnt come back to the thread), and now you answered with a partial answer. i hope you dont take it personally because I give honest opinion.

I didn't take it personal and I will give my honest opinion. I personally make pennies by answering your hh threads. It's not worth it for me at all. I do it because I'm feeling unselfish and nice, see someone working hard and I want to give some ideas to point in right direction.

You are a big hypocrite yourself by saying I post short answers, when in reality you just post a shit ton of hands without putting much effort in op. For me to give detailed answers to your expectations to each is not worth it and too time consuming. Even though I personally think I put in quite a bit of time into including details where needed and coming back to answer questions. (Im not sure but I don't even know if I get paid for 2nd replies in same thread) I don't really care because i'm personally not doing it for the money.

I understand the frustration but you feel very entitled, it's a bad mindset to have both for grinding poker and for getting help. Nobody has to do this. You should be very happy with hints and use logic to extrapolate on how you can apply the info you are given for almost free imo. If you look on 2p2 there is a thread asking how much is coaching worth with a good coach. Some very smart guys say few hours is worth easily 10-20k and I agree. In fact if everyone was selfish and sites like ps, rio, cr etc dissappeared poker would get tougher at a much slower rate even at this stage.

Working on one specific spot takes hours, it's absolutely a terrible idea for me to post ranges even for one spot when I know at least 1k people will get to it, if not more.

And lastly, guys have a lot of their own stuff to do and don't sit there monitoring the threads or might forget. Obviously you do because the info is important to you.

re coaching, state of PS etc

It's not like anywhere else is better than PS. It's just hard to expect players to give good content away when it's their livelihood.
The only time we get any decent NL content anywhere is when either a good player decides they've had enough of NL and are only playing PLO or something now and are happy to give away their stuff. Or when a good player who has worked hard and is just moving up to midstakes gets a bit excited and gives stuff away without thinking too much of the consequences.

I think coaching is ok, but for price to value and just overall benefit, I don't think you can go past a sub to some good software and plain old hard work.

But how can each video from Internet be so valuable, each minute is brilliant in his videos? He shows mostly theory videos, where he explains new concepts. Also uri peleg shows in his videos many exploitative approaches which I like a lot. Unfortunatelly uri peleg doesnt make many diamond videos lately, and Internet makes videos very rarely. And from most other coaches, I start watching video and after 15 min I realize how it is nothing new and waste of time mostly. In hand evaluation forums, coach w34z3l explains me everything I ask. He doesnt provide his detailed ranges, but at least he explains everything. mblm is also even providing ranges, and explainig good, but lately he stopped answering threads (hopefully on holiday).

So for most coaches, this forum lately looks like opportunity to commercialize their private coaching, by lets just answer the threads by giving them rough idea what they could learn from me if they pay me private coaching. Few days ago I posted around 20 hands, and coach serverm07 asnwered all of them, by answering something like:

Hi GingerKid,
3bet preflop.
call flop,
fold turn.
Thanks.

So for each hand I had to ask questions why do you think it is better than what I played, and after all I just thought what a waste of time was posting and reading those hands.

So since pokerstrategy earns money from our rake, I would expect some quality content from them, and not just commercials. I would expect, new articles from time to time (there are no new articles at all), some videos with hot theory content (and not just showing how they can steal blinds and cbet and 3bet in very standard spots), and some good quality answers in hand evaluation forum. For me it would be enough to post only one hand per day in forum, if the quality of the answer would be high (range anlyses not only single hand), but because that is not the case, I have to post 20+ hands per day if I want to advance, so that I can derive conclusions how to play my range.

This feels insulting to me because that's not the case at all. And in fact I posted details in some spots and not others. Also it's part of the learning process to ask questions. Once again you feel entitled and expect to just get answers handed to you. I already explained in my posts above why that would be a terrible idea to post ranges. You also seem to give me no respect at all for the threads where I spent quite a bit of time answering your questions and posting which software to use what kind of things to keep in mind etc (bvb thread on low board for example). I was on holidays and had some time during my down time while everyone was sleeping and decided to be a little active. This post makes me not want to answer any of your questions at all because of your attitude. The thing is there are many guys like you in poker, when someone posts a vid there are going to be 100s of people unhappy, if the coach says doing x is fine and doing y is fine, then you get bunch of guys saying wtf we want to know exactly what to do, if the coach then spends a bit of time explaining why, then you get another group of guys saying wtf move on already you said x is and y is fine, stop wasting my time. The coaches get judged by the site on reviews and feedback and obviously it can be very frustrating and stressful when this happens. And it happens quite often to everyone, even internet. People are always unhappy with something instead of being appreciative and greatful.

Edit: one last thing. This forum is not all about just poker strategy. To me, there are many aspects to poker and anything really. If you look around the blogs and challenges, you can find a ton of great info. At the end of the day, we are all students and can learn from each other. Take my blog for example, I write about how self improvement has been helping me. It's helpful for me to personally write it down, drill the idea into my head because I have "failed" several times because I tried things that didnt work for me. And there are many blogs like that out there. I read some for entertainment, some for education in x field, some in y field, some because it's my friend, etc. The point being there is a shit ton of great info here waiting for you for essentially free and you just have to not be close minded and absorb it.

Hopefully I didn't come off to harsh, I know tone of text can be very easy to misinterpret. It's my personal opinion and a best way I know how to put in relatively short text since we could write about these topics.

Hi, I understand that 2x you used just as example, but I wanted to say that it is not enough to win only 10% the pot at the final hand to make preflop call +EV. Because when we call flop, turn, it is our money, so if we win only 10% at the final hand, we lost a lot actually. So the only thing what is important is that if we at the final hand in average loose less than 1bb, it means that our blind defense was better than folding. So the pot odds would actually matter a lot if both players would check down, but since it is not the case, then we have to loose less than 1bb on average.

Yes I know that you spent a lot of effort on some threads, and I said in those threads that I was impressed with the quality of the answer and all details.
But thats just some threads, on most other threads you asnwered very shortly without explanations. I know that it sounds insulting, and I was aware of that, but I wanted to say honest what I think about it, so that hopefully things can improve, and hopefully you dont take it personally. Or maybe you like more when people dont say anything but they think something is wrong? Also my critics was not actually for you, but for pokerstrategy. As I said in my comment, i understand why you (and other coaches) dont provide detailed answers as you could and that I would do the same if I were you, but I complained actually on pokerstrategy that they for the rake they win from members dont provide quality content as they good.
IF they would pay coaches enough to answer ranges and detailed in threads, then coaches would be more motivated to do so.

Also now you can say who am I to criticise and tell opinion what is wrong, but I am a customer of pokerstrategy, and I think that in business world it is quite normal that customers tell what they like and what they dont like, what could be improved, and that the most companies are super happy to hear it, especially when customer is not happy.

I understand your point of view and problems you face as a coach. Working with many people (customers in your case) is on of the toughest among all jobs, since you have so many different people who will complaine, not many will be thankfull, and many will be insulting. Also it is worth noticing that I was in few of your detailed answers to my threads (not only to you but also other coaches) saying thanks a lot, it helped me a lot understanding the topic, but now after seeing only one thread where I compailned and was unhappy about answer, now this becomes the most important factor, and you decide not to comment any more on my threads? Can it be that you are not accepting negative critics from people, and quit cooperating once it is told to you? I would understand that you get insulted if I would say, you are horrible coach, stupid or something similar, but I just said that I am not happy with getting very short unexplained answers and I dont see what insults did you see there? I would like to hear really what do you find insulting in my comment, so that I can improve, to reformulate it more polite in the future.

I don't think you understand the big picture here at all. I think that because of the posts you made in this thread, so I will try and explain it to you. This goes back as far as the first training site cardrunners, the guys that started it made a ton of money, I don't know exact number but that number is minuscule compared to how much the guys the guys that taught people and the guys that would have figured out things on their own would have made. This holds true today, if every single person that is a winning poker pro just stopped teaching completely and just went about their business, all of the videos/articles/valuable information was completely deleted, the game would evolve at a much slower rate and you would see way less guys climbing the stakes. Think about even, bb defense for example, 2-3 years ago people were folding 70-80% from bb to bu 2x, yea the training sites made some money from releasing the info that you should be defending way more, but if only the guys that knew that kept it to themselves they could simply keep clicking raise and printing money, once again the money they made is very tiny compared to if the information essentially stayed a secret. As someone, that's learning about the game, be very grateful that the human nature is to share info and some guys were either nice or dumb enough to do that. As a poker pro, this is absolutely terrible for you because the game is constantly evolving. There is less and less money to be made relatively speaking.

Now on to the issue of why I think you and many others are ungrateful and entitled. The quote above and below along with few others in this thread clearly illustrate that to me. I'm speaking to you as someone who is also a student and has to learn from others.

Hi GingerKid,
3bet preflop.
call flop,
fold turn.
Thanks.

Even though, you have said thank you to me in some threads, think about as if a random person read this thread. Do you think they would think you are appreciative of me? I'm speaking about myself personally since it was directed at me. This can obviously be true for other coaches on this site. Also, you think this information is useless because you are treating it that way. Pretend you are a detector, think of this info as hints. Ask yourself how can I solve this puzzle? You seem to want the answers flat out handed to you and you just learn continue grinding and making money because you generate some rake for the site. You have to realize that although I'm ahead of you in the learning process, I'm not some high stakes sicko and I also have to learn more each and every day. I'm very thankful when people respond to my question at all, even if it as short as "NO". Do you 3bet this hand? "NO". Given I trust and respect the person, I use my detective skills to figure out why that person doesn't 3bet that hand. If they answer the question "why?" I'm doing backflips in my head.

And no, I don't think this has to do with me not being able to accept negative critics and quit cooperating. I'm not sure if you missed it the first time so I will repeat myself again. I have about 0 monetary gain here, I have spent (not sure exact #) easily over two hours responding to you. I might have made $20-$30 from all of that. That's way lower than my hourly, but you can't even compare that to my hourly alone because think back to the big picture, now you have some new info and the info is also pretty much publicly available for the masses to read. Luckily, 95% of people are lazy and won't. The reason I'm responding to you is because I can see some resemblance of myself (I used to act like you) but I would try hard at times and also you seem to be trying to respond maturely and respectfully, I also am hoping I can open your eyes to this so called big picture and be more appreciative of your poker friends and coaches that help you, I realize you said that you are but I'm saying even more than that. The fact that you are not happy with short answers, already covered this a bit, but you have to remember that there are 24 hours in a day. The coaches have to do their own grinding, studying, personal life, etc. Be happy that you get a response in the first place and work even harder than you are to dig deeper.

Also, if I was privately coaching you, then it would be more reasonable for you to criticize my teaching publicly because you are paying me directly. Even then, I think if you got coaching from any winning poker pro that beats the games these days, you would still take away more info than you paid for. I have done several lessons with internet, there was one that I just wasn't happy with and I'm pretty sure he could tell as well. I didn't however come on here bashing him because I was thankful for the overall info I had learned from him and how much it has helped me progress and how much money I have made because of it. In fact, I recommend him to a lot of people. It would be much more respectful to tell him or post on here that doing x during coaching doesn't work.

Great thread men thank you we don't get many of these let's get the ball rolling

I doubt it's possible to quantify exactly how much we need to be overfolding when it's on early streets. But it does seem that you have to go lower than 1-A approach?
Exactly as it's impossible to say what preflop range is correct game theory speaking as it's way too complex with way too many variables.

It's like with the %equity we realize preflop - people can give you rough estimates but I have never seen specific numbers that were backed with solid evidence (huge database would be a decent empirical approach I assume. but didn't see this shared anywhere). And equity realized both for you in terms of actual EV and for villain is vital to know on flops as it changes the math for future streets.

As to the coaching, well. That's up to the coach. There are great people like weazel that flat out shares ranges he'd recommend and is very open about them. So yes it is possible but I get serverm07's point of view - it's time consuming and it's not as rewarding to help out a random person who expects this as being entitled because it's a paid service if you compare it e.g. to an actual friend who chats to you and asks for your help. The good feeling you get from that is more than money can provide :)

But I also GingerKid's view and it's perfectly legitimate. Often even when you make a detailed op, take time with breaking down ranges yourself and then get a very short generic answer you pack your bags and stop posting in the HHevaluation completely and instead post in a public forum or chat with friends where people can reply because they want to help out and it's always a bonus if rarely someone actually good comes along and gives advice because he finds the hand interesting, likes how you post or simply wants to help out.

You are both right and I can't see anything wrong with what either one of you has said if I try to look at the issue from your perspective. And that's all world from human eyes is - the truth is always relative to a specific person't point of view.

But I'd like to find out btw and let's setup examples if you guys don't want to share these (if you look at it as a third party, it's quite funny, serverm won't post ranges, ginger didn't either to start solving this on specifics )
say BU v Blinds, we get 3bet
we have this flat range
and 3bettor has this
board:

our range breakdown:

He cbets 2/3 pot meaning we need to call 60% of our 1-A range
We have around 29% pot odds (rounded up, say rake did this )

Assuming no raising range, what we need to do is from EV perspective go by specific hands/hand groupings we have one by one, see our *estimate* (cause I doubt it's solvable specifically) if 0> -call amount+pot on next street*%equity we realize*equity and get a calling range, and I'd assume that it would be lower than 1-A? if not in this spot than in others where ranges are assymetric, and it won't really make sense to play -ev hands just to deny villain profit with bluffs in practice?

This is why 1-A can't be really used here if I'm getting this right? Or would it make sense to know that some hand groupings are -EV just to not fold more than 1-A

Hi, :f_drink:

As you get "advanced", it's a lot of guesstimating and trying to get close as possible. The more you work on these things the better your intuition becomes. The thing about 1-a, or naive 1-a is that it's not the holy grail but a starting point. We have evolved to find out that it can be misleading especially when trying to figure out a calling range when raising range exists and ranges are asymmetric.

The thing is I made that post from the point of view of being a student myself. I disagree with few points about people postings hands on here. I have yet to see a detailed op, it's more likely a case of people posting a shit load of hands, sometimes the OP doesn't even get involved in the discussion. Too many people just want straight up answers, some kind of a magic recipe. GK does try to get involved and try to discuss, ask good questions, etc, however the OP is never even close to what I consider being detailed. I do understand the unhappiness because poker is a very frustrating game and you just want to hurry up and figure it out and move up. However, I completely disagree with him not being wrong if looked at the issue from his perspective, because I have and I do. I tried explaining why in my previous post and clearly feel pretty strongly about it. Even though I have indirectly been bashing PS for not paying enough, the site was still useful for me meeting cool people and also reading information from very intelligent people. It was a place that allowed that to happen and someone at the top was greatly benefiting monetarily as well.
