Well the thing is that when it comes to mass medium the only value you have is the copyright. Else my digitally produces work of art isnt worth shit more than anyone elses copies.

Do you think that Pokerstrategy would be up for long if somebody put out all the videos and strategy articles from all status levels and put them up on Piratebay - to the benefit for the poor pokerplayers in the world? But you havent taken anything from pokerstrategy - they have their videos left on the servers.

Even if this is true, that still doesn't mean that piracy is comparable to stealing. This point, I believe, is absolutely critical. Every time I have been discussing this topic with other people, they always end up claiming that piracy is flat-out theft; and at that point, the discussion just grinds to a halt - you can't really justify theft. This attitude seems to be shared by those in power.

I think it is fair to say that copyright law, as it is defined today, is severely flawed. It is a matter of debate whether piracy is a solution to this problem, one of its symptoms, or anything in between. But as long as we repeat this tired old phrase that piracy equals stealing, there won't be any meaningful debate, nor any solution to the problem. There will only be witch hunts.

That being said, I believe that we're not looking at the whole picture if we only focus on the potentially lost sales. Especially considering that in most cases, only a fraction of the profit would actually go to the artist. In the case of music albums, the artist gets to keep about 13% of the sale price according to one BBC News article, and depending on their deal, it might be significantly less. The biggest earner will always be the recording company. Concerts ticket sales are probably a much better source of income for most bands, and in this case, it can't hurt to spread their music around a bit to get people interested.

Your arguments are becoming increasingly ridiculous and you are clearly uninformed in matters of psychology of the masses, economy and torrents.

Guess what - there are already torrents containing PokerStrategy (and lots of other poker sites) educational material available on the web. I would even link you to some of them, but I don't think I'm allowed. And yet these poker sites are still online and profiting. Just because something is freely available, that does not mean that everybody will find or even search for that download source instead of paying for the product.

You can find nearly every game released in 2014 for free on torrents, and yet those games still sell and they will sell for years to come.

And what do you base that assumption on? Just because you're unable to hack anything, it doesn't mean nobody in the world can.

"Previous studies have found that people who pirate content are also much more likely to purchase content legally than those who do not illegally download music and movies, often being greater consumers of media."

Interesting indeed.

This one is also worth the read:

WOWOWOWOW

Post deleted because it in one sentence suggested someone might be ignorant.
What a wonderful PC forum.. And some people suggesting they would wield and thrust their mighty hammers for even less.

What an age we live in... One word comes to mind, but I don't think I'm allowed to write it on this forum.

Funny I remember when one member really insulted another, and on the lowest level, but that was pstrategy coach
so the hammers laid low that day.

Now admins lift that furious PC hammer of yours, I'm done I promise.

Hey CrazedTulip,

I've restored the part of your post relevant to the conversation and removed the rest. Every member here regardless of status is allowed to express their opinion. If you disagree with their opinion, then by all means argue your point but don't resort to name-calling.

I would appreciate the link to this post from a PokerStrategy coach as well. Feel free to contact me through the community tool.

Regards

Laz

You are jumping to conclusions just because I suck at english. (and poker sadly).

As I see it why things still works is because the pirates possibilitys to spread material is still somewhat limitited because it is illegal. Of course if you know youre way around you cand find literally everything out there. The reason people still is reluctant to use these possibilitys is because it is a scary world if you dont understand what laws that is involved, the risk you take both legally and to such things as viruses. People in general dont know how to protect themselves and it is a global swingers club out there.

Yeah, I expressed myself badly there. But if it was perfectly risk free, everything was easy searchable it would be hard to maintain this site.

Whos making asumptions here?

The discussion was about if it was stealing or not to make a digital copy of something. The complexity of this subject is so huge so I cant really get into this in a language I dont master. Of course there is people that can hack literally anything. But it is still not widely accesible to everyone. If piracy would be totally legal things would be different.

I think this studies is biased. The greatest consumers of illegally downloaded content I know personally are collectors. They want to have everything but it isnt physically possible so the download stuff instead. so to draw the conclusion from that the greatest downloaders also are the greatest buyers of physical media that more downloading would in itself lead to more physical buying. I have tried to discuss this with some of the people behind one of this studies but the where very reluctant to view it from any other angle than the one they had taken themselves. Im not saying that I know whats right or wrong here I just say Im sceptical towards researchers who have a rigid opinion.

And furthermore I dont say that piracy couldnt induce interesting developments in it self. The industry have to adapt to developments. Sometimes good comes out of it. But it has to be a balance to it. But I do not fear that the big companys dont will cope with new situations. They will find ways to make money. But it is low-level creators like myself who need other ways to communicate with the consumers. The internet should be able to shorten the chain from producer to consumer and thus need lesser number of consumers to every producer to make it go around. We are squeezed betwen megastructures like Amazon and pirates.

Nobody said it was PHYSICAL buying, just buying. You can buy any game today from the internet without having a physical copy of it. You might, for example, try out a game, like it and then buy it to be able to play with other people. I did the exact same thing with some games.

I don't think pirates are anything close to a megastructure, but to each his own. I'm tired of providing arguments on the whole matter.

About your alleged copyright problem, what content do you create? If you create games, you can add me to friends. I've got some very good articles for you that will increase your profitability.

Yeah, I believe this would be a good moment to close this thread.

We had a quite interesting discussion, but I think that everything has been said now and it's time to move on.

Thanks everyone for sharing your insights on this.
