Spots like this often confuse me. The limper was a known passive fish and I've seen him limp quite a few times before in other games.

My thought process:
If this was folded around to me, this is an easy minraise steal attempt. The limper complicates things. First off, I don't want to fold A9o in the SB, but I don't want to raise the fish to 60 chips for 3 reasons, 1) he will very likely call (and so might the big blind who was also passive), 2) I will have to play post-flop out of position, 3) my hand doesn't flop well.

So in this case I chose to shove and maximize my fold equity. Shoving for 20bb is something I try to avoid, but in this case, I feel it was better than folding. However, my mistake may be the fact that I refused to fold A9o in the SB. It's not a great hand, but I felt confident it was the best hand at the time. Looking at the hand now, it seems like a -EV play.

Any input is greatly appreciated :)

Hello TheFireBeard,

As u said raise is not a good idea but we are too deep for shove. For sure we can call 10 chips to play post flop with our hand. No need to make 25BB deep shove. We are risiking too much for winning very small pot. Complete and play post flop.

Guys if you have any questions, do not hesitate to write in this thread by clicking the button or

Best regards,
Antoan

Thanks Anto, the only reason I wasn't willing to limp was because it gives the BB such a good opportunity to squeeze wide, but I now realize that this is unlikely with the BB being a passive player, who would likely slowplay his value range.

I appreciate your input! :)

Hello Anto,

could you detail why not to raise around 3.5bb? Then cbet a decent flop? I'd iso raise quite a lot in this situation, is it wrong?

I would limp this preflop and prefer to raise with bit better hands. Overall hand like KJ would be better candidate for iso raise. Plays much better postflop. Main problem in iso raising wide from SB is bad position so you often don't want to build big pot with mediocre hands. Where as from button you can make lot wider iso raises to isolate limpers.

IMO and like the others a 3-3.5bb raise would be good with A9o. A 1/2 pot cbet on the flop would probably do the job as well to follow through.

Shoving for 25bb post flop so early for so little not my ideal line. You never mentioned what stats he had. Does he fold to PF 3bets? What is his FvFcbet? Blind vs blind play. Just a few stats to use against someone you've noticed to be fishy.
