Another Monday, another rebuy feeder satellite to November's Auckland main event mega satellite series.

Managed to luck box my way to my 3rd mega-satellite ticket. And found out that if I get 5 mega satellite tickets I can swap for one main event ticket. I'm playing the Monday satellite rebuy tournaments as I'm in the habit of playing on Mondays and I'm pretty sure I have a Monday poker addiction pushing me towards the Casino on Mondays.

And it was a luck box set of hands that got me there. I seemed to attract Aces / Kings or Queens when I was getting into a "Must Shove Soon" scenario. And thankfully, most times I was called and the hands all held. One pair of 7s made a set against my Kings on the river. However, as I had made top set on the Turn I wasn't that fazed. The poor guy who had the 7's thought I had AK and was bitterly disappointed to discover he had succumbed to set over set (did I say luck box?)

Hand of interest was a hand I observed from the SB.

Hijack open-raised to 4K leaving about 18K behind with blinds 500/1000
CO 3bets to 15K leaving about 5K behind.

Everyone else folds
Hijack shoves. CO, being pot-committed calls.

Hijack flips over A  J
CO flips over J :diamond: 6 :diamond:

Flop 8 :diamond:6 :heart:Q : :club:
Turn J :spade:
River 6 :spade:

CO got there with a boat after having 3bet light. His comment after the hand was that the guy in the Hijack had been open-raising lots of hands and he was surprised at being called and being the underdog....

Played in live feeder satellite again at the Casino today and discovered that the hand I should fold is QQ

Had been travelling as chip leader in 33 seat satellite. Down to last 11 players and table chip leader

buy-ins around $70 for a $520 satellite ticket. (1 Rebuy/ 1 Addon with initial entry of $30). 33 starting runners. 11 left. Top 3 get a ticket each. 4th gets $30

5 at the table. I am in BB with QQ and 53K.

CO is next big stack with 31K and has been fairly active. I haven't played back at him via a 3Bet. Have flat called and taken the pot post-flop once but mainly have been letting him have my blind

I'm mid-50's with tightish image. Have taken down some pots at showdown with good hands. But about 50% of the hands I have taken down have been without showdown.

CO makes a min-raise to 4K (2X BB). Button has 2 BB and goes all-in. I look down at QQ.

In terms of ticket ICM, we both want the short stack to go.

In terms of taking the pot down I think I am way ahead of both opponent's ranges.

CO is youngish, Irish guy. Have seen him shove from BB on a SB complete. (SB being another guy in his 50's who is tight and likes to play post-flop poker and won't shove small to big lightly. My impression is of someone who has played some internet poker and is reasonably aggressive.

I 3bet to 10K which gives him great odds to call IP.

He decides to shove on me for another 21 K. If I call and win I have a 80K (40BB) stack, probably down to 9 handed and would be cruising for a ticket.

I snap call and his face drops when I turn over Q :heart:Q :spade: and he flips over 10 :diamond: 10

Pity the first 4 cards are diamonds. :f_cry:

down to final table 10 handed. About 3 hands in I pick up QQ again in CO.

UTG open-limps.
Hijack shoves for 14K
I reshove for about 22K

Hijack turns over A :diamond:8 :diamond:
Flop J :diamond:A :spade:10 :diamond:
Turn is 7 :diamond: :f_cry:

Very next hand I get QQ
UTG open-raises and I obv shove my remaining 8K

He calls and flips over A :club:K :club:
Board runs out 8 :club:A :spade:Q :club:K :diamond:9 :club: :f_cry:

Poker.... A game where I should fold QQ....

Since she's the only one who can do this, we'll have to play somewhere else. Fortunately, I created the imaginatively named 'JB's Club' so that I could get my arse handed to me on a plate in last year's PS HU tournament. Let's play there.

Club ID number: 895115
Invitation Code: jbpatzer123

I reckon it's too ageist just to restrict it to old farts. Anyone can join but I reserve the right to throw you out if

(1) I don't like the cut of your jib,
(2) You check-raise me too often when I cbet 98% of my range,
(3) You're no fun.

Joining the club does not guarantee you entry to the Skype channel, because not everyone can cope with Roo asking what the rules of 2-7 single draw are for the 17th time.

We usually start three or four nanostakes MTTs in various games at about 8pm and play until Vorpal sucks out in the final HU pot.

Anybody up for 8pm this Thursday?

Last night my #1 son (SN1), age 19, discovered an outer threshold for his alcohol tolerance.

Around midnight last night, while still on my computer, SN1 comes into my room, and says something along the lines of "I'm not feeling well. Do you mind if I sleep in here a bit until you are ready to go to bed? I think I drunk a little too much". This is very unusual. Never happened before. Teenage son interacting in this manner with Father at midnight after returning from local (walking distance) party.

SN1 settles into bed with sheet over eyes.... About 45 mins later movement on the bed, Scared, urgent look on his face. Appropriate bowl given to son and up comes some of last night's dinner, after which he settles back down to sleep. Around 2:00 am I bust out of last MTT and am ready for bed. SN1 dead to world after throwing up episode.

Give up trying to rouse him and decide to sleep in SN1's bed.

Woken by constant buzzing from text's on SN1's phone so toodle back to my room where I have one of those conversations you don't really want to have.

SN1: "Can you get me some paper towels?"
Me: "Why?"
SN1: "I've thrown up on your bed."

I look closer. SN1 has head on my pillow and at far end of pillow is pile of vomit, with SN1's face about 5cm from it. He then points at duvet cover, where another pile of vomit sits and says "I don't know how that got there".

I look at bowl by side of bed. A gleaming, pretty, empty bowl it is. Freshly cleaned and ready to catch stomach contents....

He confessed to consuming 6 diesel rtds. Claims there are 1.8 std drinks per rtd. Jeepers.

SN1 has now toodled off to his nice clean bed. His final words being "Can you lecture me later when I'm feeling better"

This is the first time he has been drunk and vomited in the home environment...... (at least while I've been around at the same time)...<sigh>

Side notes: Have seen the invitation to zimmer's but I am almost never in the mood to play at that time of day as it is too early for me. If it happens it will happen.

Hi, Hamishk,
I laughed so hard at #1 son's exploits. Reminds me of me at that age (somewhat younger to tell the truth), coming in a 02:00 plastered and trying to act sober around my Mum who had waited up. I of course thought I had her fooled. Yeah right.

'twould be great to have you join us for the zimmers. It is a whack o' fun or as much fun as can be had for 11¢ anyway.

Cheers,
VS

Thanks for the comments.

Re Zimmers - I'm usually too tired. Zimmers starts around 08:00 am local time. If I've been playing until midnight or later, in general I want to go through my morning routine before playing (meditation, 5 mins exercise (much more efficient at exercise once you get past 50 didn't you know).. I'm usually ready to face the world at around 10:00 am local time, and the zimmers have been running for two hours by then... Brain addled by sleep fog until well after the start time

Seem to have lost enthusiasm for this blog. Fickle man that I am I have started another blog in another place, but even that blog gets scant attention. And have had a brief flirtation with Twitter which seems to have petered out.

Anyhoo. Still a mediocre poker player. But enjoying live poker even if I sort of suck at it.

Random burst of enthusiasm prior to 2014 exiting stage right.

Rebuy tournament at Casino last night. Busted out around 17th out of 67 to guy who was making god look like a fish.

Hand of note
UTG shoves for 3700 (blinds 300/600). - shows 7♣:7♦:
UTG +1 flats for 3700 leaving 12K behind - shows A♣:J♣: when he decides to gamble it up after reshoves later in hand
UTG +2 reshoves for around 70K - shows T♠::Tx:
I have 7K and fold A♠: K♠: (major nit that I am)
RLG guy calls, leaving 30K behind with 2♣:2♦:

Board runs out 2♠:8♦:8♠:4♦:7♥:

Guy who shoved in 70k with pocket 10s picks up jaw from ground and exits stage right.

I later found out that earlier in the night, RLG guy had cracked pocket aces in a hand that had gone like

AA - open-raise to 2K, leaving 15K behind
RLG guy K♦:T♦: flat
Fish 5♦:6♦: flat
Short stack shoved for 6K

AA guy reshoves for 15K
RLG guy with K♦:T♦: calls off most of his stack
Fish calls off his stack

RLG guy rivers diamond flush..... Knocking out AA guy

Prior to knocking me out, with blinds at 800/1600, I was in BB with 5300 chips against his stack of about 175K and he open-limps UTG. SB completes. I shove for 5300 (another 3700 on top of his limp of 1600) and he folds.... He had about 10X the SB stack.....

Hand he knocked me out on was standard for him last night.

I shoved with AKo in CO.
He calls on Button with 44
Turns a straight.... 2356 by turn

Is that what people mean when they say, "Holy mackerel" ?

I used to deliberately fold hands when the table luckbox entered them.
luck > skill and all that.

Best wishes for a peaceful, prosperous 2015,
