Is this NL10? You should always have 100bb stack... If you were in BB and SB steals, I would defend by calling or sometimes by 3betting. When we are SB I think it is better to 3bet here because we are OOP and there is a possibility that BB calls too or squeezes. Stats are very handy when deciding our action. Vs some villains we can't call or 3bet with ATo and vs some we can do it with 72o.

I'd fold it sometimes and 3-bet it others. Calling is out of the question.
3-betting might get tricky if BB or button call/raise. If someone calls you are out of position in a big pot with AT, even if you hit the A you are not really sure if you are winning and mistakes out of position usually cost a stack. If someone raises you fold.

This is NL5, i was putting two picture cards and AQ-AT in calling in the SB, i showed -EV in this particular spot, so are we agreed Folding is probably the best option? i guess 3betting is good only if the opponent calls with a lot worse hands

I'd say folding is not the best option but the safest. Things can get complicated with a 3-bet, but we have to consider his hands is most likely worse than yours. There's more room for mistakes, but there's more room for winnings. That's why I fold some and play some.

so really before we make a decision on 3betting we need to ask ourselves 2 questions

1 - will villain call with worse hands
2 - is our skill level a lot better then villains

if the answer to those is a yes then we should 3bet, i guess this would be a good rule of thumb

You are forgetting one question: will he fold to 3bets enough. He is stealing with a wide range, he has for example KJo and J8s in his range. That means he will usually fold a lot to 3bets. If he folds to 3bet 80% of the time it is profitable to 3bet him everytime. We don't have to get him to call with worse hands. If he folds it's a successful re-steal.

so a decision to resteal is based on weather or not I make profit if he folds if he calls I should just play check fold?

You 3-bet expecting him to fold. You don't want to play ATo out of position. You want to take his steal and end the hand.
If he calls you bet if the flop hits your range (high cards especially). If he doesn't fold give it up. Probably invested about 15-20 BB.

Calling this handis the worst you can do , actually.
Reasons:
1. BB can easily squeeze, and you have to fold.
2. You will play without initiative, OOP and cannot stand your ground vs heavy betting.

Now, that you do not want to call ( ), you have to watch for some stats or notes on both BU and BB which will help your decision to 3 bet or not.

I think there can be some arguments for just betting the flop regardless,

I would fold this by default. If BB is very tight and passive, I would sometimes call. If BTN folds alot to 3bets (like 70%+), I would sometimes 3bet bluff.
