(And some 6max)
Here's my poker story. I hope you find the time find the time to read my journey so far, it includes some amusing stuff, sad stuff and ends with a vengeance.
I I've been playing for about 12 years [on and off] I started playing with my dad, at NL2 9 handed, I've now moved over too 6max and I've started to take a liking to heads poker. I had a decent job so I could skip the micros, and deposited $750, I had decent results there, my dad always believed I have the skills to become pro [or even earn a little extra income would be nice] me and my dad used to play a lot together, the problem for me was he was a very bad gambler, [he did ok in tournaments but in cash games OMFG is correct statement here] when he ran out of his balance, he would often ask if he could play a tournament I would respond "Sure, you can play a $10 buy in, and please if you play cash games play $2" obviously this is like putting sweets in front of a child and saying there not aloud to eat them, I would often come home to him destroying my graph and losing 3-4 stacks, I would get so angry, we would argue, he would say "why'd you let me play it, you know what I'm like" I couldn't ever say no to him, he never asked me for much and he was always there for me, when I needed him, I would already be so angry before I hit the tables, I would win the money back he lost and spew some away again, this went on for about 6 months, I broke even with the help of rake back bonus's and eventually quit because it was affecting my mood, friendships, my job and life.
Sadly he passed away 2 months ago, this has crippled me, we were so close.
I kind of nitted it out for the most part of my poker career at 6max, playing a similar range to to 9max, with a few added extras, I was the kind of player who thought i was the best and everyone else got lucky, after a few months, i was being ran over and over by 3bets, i was wondering what was going on, since i only played AA/KK vs 3bets, i used to play with a HUD, i only really new how to use the VPIP and PFR, i all really new was that when the VPIP was high and the PFR was low, it meant that they were likely to be a beginner, i mostly used it for hand analysis, i used to play 2-6 tables, and then would go on tilt and start adding more tables up to 10, imagine how fast you can lose money playing that many tables, when your folding 75c a time vs every resteal and 3 bet, added more tables would send me on monkey tilt, as soon as the regs found out i folded to almost every 3bet, them 75c's add up very quickly. I stopped playing and went back the HUD to try and figure out what was going on, i came across the vs hero stats, and found some interesting facts, my fold to 3bet stat was probably in the 90s (i cant remember) i did a little bit of research in the 3bet/4bet and resteals department, this alone dramatically, change my game.
After reading a few books, there was one in particular that was my bible for almost a year, TheMentalGameOfPoker, its by far the best book ive read on poker, ive just started the second book, witch is also pretty good so far.
I didn't play for quite for a few years, (maybe the odd game here and there), until recently last year when lockdown started, i returned to poker, i decided not to take it so seriously and just play for fun, i signed up to William hill poker, i was a little rusty to begin with, i lost roughly £300 depositing $20 and playing NL20 (sometimes i was playing drunk haha).
This story is funny
After the rust wore off, and all the poker tactics and mental work I was putting into the game was slowly coming back to me, I started to crush the game I got a free £30 from William hill from rake back bonus's, I started to crush the game, I decided with the £30 bankroll to try out the tankroll bankroll challenge witch i breezed through, (i was still a little bit yoyoing) i was at £1000 within about 2 weeks, i then decided to carry on, with the 2nd challenge taking some aggressive shots at NL400 up to £2000, witch again I completed and was sitting on a bankroll of £2400 playing 1 table on my phone, then something happened, i had been running over this regular for a few hours, i was sat a the table at at NL400 with $1600, then i did somthing completely stupid, there was another player at the table witch i new was pretty good, (i tried to avoid him and be careful vs him, i felt he was the best player at the table at the time) he had around 250bbs and was on $1000, we ended up in this pot together i had a i raised with K♣:7♦: from btn, he called from BB the board was something like J♣:T♠:3♠:6♦:K♥: rainbow, it checked all the way down to the river where i bet 30%, i was having a wee at the time and i put my phone on the side and as I went grab my phone The worst miss click ever![/color i had accidently called him all in for for 250bbs, with a K♣:7♦: i dont even need to tell you he had A♠:Q♣: for the nuts, you can imagine what i did next i gave up and monkey tilted the rest of my money away.
I decided to quit again.
Im much calmer at the tables, my decision process is much better and i have a much clearer mind while playing, i have much more work to do, i would like to start from the bottom NL2 and work my way up rather then skipping stakes to teach myself some discipline.
