It's funny that just one day after I posted that wanted to avoid playing "side games" (i.e. anything apart from that one daily Badugi tournament) I already couldn't resist the urge after I got busted in said tournament.
The problem is that it is obviously quite easily possible to leave early in a tournament like that, and if this is your only tourney for the entire day, then it's not really enough to scratch your gambling itch, is it? Especially if you have this strong desire to get a second chance.
So tonight, I played this other Badugi tournament that starts at around 23:30 my time, which is normally not great, because it can easily last until 3AM and longer if you go all the way (and if you don't plan on doing that, then what would be the point of playing it in the first place?). At least it worked out all right for me this time, I finished 4th in the end.
Nevertheless, I should look for other options. You guys are surely aware that I want to keep my playing volume somewhat low, but one tournament per day just isn't enough. Maybe those 8-game and 5CD SNGs wouldn't be such a bad choice after all? Problem is that the traffic is low, so you won't always find enough people ready to play it when you want to.
I'm sure I'll find a way...
Okay, I tried adding the $2.20 tournament that starts at around 17:30 my time to the list. It has the tendency to inconveniently interfere with my usual dinner time if I run deep, but I can always skip a session if I feel like it, and I won't run that deep every time anyway.
Today, I got another 2nd place worth about $25 and a mincash without bounties in the other one.
Finally managed to get a 2nd place finish in a paid entry Mahjong tournament. I honestly couldn't even remember my last decent cash in there. Prize money was $17.76 ($1.10 buy-in).
I also played my last (?) MicroMillions tournament yesterday, which was the 5CD event. Looked quite promising, but I eventually ran 999 into KK777. Villain drew 1, so I even was ahead predraw.
It goes without saying that I also attempted my luck in the Badugi event the day before, and I had a very nice run. In the end, I finished 103rd for $10.70. Missed the big money, but still a nice payout.
Naturally, the regular Badugi grind continues, and my last tournament just concluded with another 2nd place finish worth $31.19 including bounties. Sounds like a great result, but I'm actually very disappointed right now. My final opponent had a massive bounty, and I entered the HU as the chipleader, I believe my stack was even twice as large as his. I tend to be quite aggressive in the HU phase, but I believe I really need to pick my spots more carefully in the future, this is not the first time this happened. Then again, I also could be a bit more aggressive in some spots during the rest of the late phase, where I tend to nit it up a bit, which may have cost me a couple of golden opportunities this time.
Pretty good payday nonetheless. My Pokerstars bankroll is now close to $220.
Okay, things went better tonight. I ended up final tabling both of my tournaments, finishing 6th ($12) and 4th ($15.66).
Wednesday is Mahjong day, so there will most likely be a short break from the Badugi grind tomorrow. Meanwhile, I'm considering if I should take the chance and take a shot at the daily $11 Progressive KO tournament, which seems to be the only other Badugi tournament Pokerstars is running apart from my usual $2.20 ones.
Obviously, my bankroll of around $240 would be WAY too small for such a buy-in, but then again, I'm a casual player, so a failed shot wouldn't hurt too much. And the results in the $2.20 tournaments have been promising enough so far...
Just some food for thought. I will keep grinding the $2.20s for now, until I'm confident enough. Waiting for a classic 100 BI bankroll before taking shots at the $11 tourney seems to nitty for me, but I should still give it a bit more time, not sure how much exactly.
Maybe I could try it if I manage to ship another one of the $2.20 games (usually pays around $70). Any comments or suggestions?
Turns out that my Mahjong home game had to be cancelled, so I did have some time for Badugi after all. I still managed to pick up $17.50 in an online Mahjong tournament for finishing 2nd.
Badugi results were 10th for $5.45 and 3rd for $17.99 tonight.
I also had a look at that $11 tournament I mentioned last time. In the end, only 25 players were participating (compared to 100-120 in the $2.20s), which means that only the top three places get paid (compared to around 15 in the $2.20s). So I'm not sure if those tournaments would be a good pick, even if I did have a bigger bankroll for them. For now, I'll stick to my usual games.
