Good day grinders :f_cool:

This hand comes from the Final Table in a Live 185€ tournament, which still confuses me.
With 8 players left, I hold a slight chiplead with 2 players being quite short. Only 2 orbits has passed and I didn't show any aggression in those, so when a smart opponent opens from MP and I find A♣:5♠: in CO, I decide to put some pressure and fire a 3bet. Stacks in this pot: Me 60BB, CO player 40BB.

Preflop:
MP opens 2BB, Hero CO 3bet 5BB, CO call

Flop: A♥:Q♦:Q♠:
MP check, Hero check

Turn 9♣:
MP check, Hero check

River 7♠:
MP bets 75%, Hero???

So from the start. When my opponent calls 3bet OOP, his range looks like mostly TopPairs, Medium SC, some broadways and stronger Aces. Having TP myself on a paired board, I decided to check back and evaluate on the later streets.
Turn, I didn't expect my opponent to call with a weaker hand or fold stronger, so I checked back again. Was that a mistake? Should I protect my equity in a hand and fold some straight draws like JTs, KJs, KTs or small pairs?
River: opponent leads with a big bet and I fall into tank. When I check back twice, I might induce opponent to fold my possibly KK, JJ, TT. At the same time, I feel myself beaten a lot by a queen or a 77,99.
I've talked about this hand with some friends and most pointed me, that I should fold in this spot. I'm still not convinced though as it would mean that I can't continue with aggression on any street and should check back 3 times on such board.
And would it change any lines if holding was A♣:K♥: or A♣:J♥: A♣:T♥: wich has blockers to KQ QJ QT?
I hope You can release me from my pain :f_eek:

I don't play live so may be wrong.

I think you should call on the river, you need to win 40% of the time roughly. I think after it being checked down he may fire a bet with most of his range to either steal the pot or for value. I think you have 55% against a range with SC's in it and if he's tighter and only calls the 3 Bet with AA-TT,AK,AQ,AJ,KQs you have still 40% equity and I think he could fire on the river with any of these and it's break even (and don't think he's that tight).

What sort of player is he? I think the bigger than normal bet is to push you off it since you haven't shown any strength after the 3 bet. I don't think he would think you would call a 75% pot bet, I think if he was value betting it would be 35-45% percent of the pot bet.
Or if he's good he may want you to think this.

I think firing a cbet at this pot would be good if he doesn't have a A or Q he will not continue. If he calls it your done with the hand and fold to any pressure. You say yourself you dont see him calling with weaker or folding bigger imo winning the 11.5BB pot is good enough now or if he calls you know your done with the hand.

I'd fire cbet with AK,AJ,AT if called would try to check down and fold AJ,AT and your A5o to any pressure.
On the river AK is still about 40% to his range that would call our cbet (AA,QQ,AK,AQ,AJ,KQ) so would try to check it down but would be prepared to maybe call one more bet as AJ makes up about 40% of this range and if we think he has KK,ATs we are actually at 50% and are ahead, and if you add any off ATo,KJ,KT,JT like hands that may call the cbet, then we are in a good spot with AK (AK 80%, AJ 70% AT 60% A5o 60%)

Live MTT of 185€ is basically like a 2$ online right? I wouldn't really 3bet preflop, but that depends on how short the shorties are. A5o simply doesn't play great even in position. If he calls, we're dominated super often and getting ourself in sticky spots, like we did in this hand.
I would bet turn, simply to protect our hand against anything that has equity versus us and to make our life easier if a river comes. We're not getting two streets here so I might just go for the one street on the turn to checkback river unless we improve.
As played I just snapcall river because you really showed no interest in the pot postflop so this can easily be a move with some random trash.

Why not wait one street to place that bet? If he doesn't have an A, there is basically no turn that can improve him to go from worst to best unless he hits his two outer for a full house. Also, by checking flop, we allow him to bluff later streets. I'm not saying I'm calling both turn and river but you can call turn. I don't see him bluffing twice with a worse hand. As he checks turn I'm pretty confident we are best here so I put out a bet myself. It only gets really ugly if he leads out river then but in the end I still think we have a fold then.

Sorry Mantelo didn't realise you played at a high level and the previous answer is childs play to you. Just read your Turning 0$ into WSOP trip:s_thumbsup: I'll certainly keep up to date with it, good luck with your goals.

Back to the hand without the (now silly) %'s, I still think its a call on the river. The 75% pot bet I think is too big for a value bet, and was to try and push you of it with his missed draws, lower pairs etc that he has to bet if he wants the pot.
If trapping and then betting the river for value I think he would bet lower and either hope you call, or raise thinking he is weaker.

If you are giving him a range that includes 77, you would also have to add 88,TT etc and he may take a stab at this pot with all of his range that is behind you to try and take it down, since your ahead a great deal of the time I think its a call.

I still think a cbet on the flop or bet on turn will win it a good enough % of the time.

Cbet the flop, I don't think he would float this board oop, if waiting for turn if a K,J,T lands we are in a tricker position as they potentially give him 4 more outs to call the bet.

Betting the turn does increase your chances of being able to check down the river if called.

I think both have merits samni, and on thinking on it, I think you are right checking behind flop and either calling/betting turn depending on what he does, and then either checking behind folding river (I wouldn't call two bets).

Thanks guys for replies :f_thumbsup: At least You agree that I should invest at least one street in this spot, although opinions differ on which exactly. If I was to play the same hand again, I probably bet small Turn and chb River if didn't face a check/raise on the Turn, in which case I should give up.

That indeed seems to be the most optimal way to protect your hand / get some value / don't valueown yourself.
