SB posts SB 0.5 BB, BB posts BB 1 BB, CO posts penalty blind 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 2.5 BB) Hero has K♣ J♣

Hero raises to 3 BB, fold, CO calls 2 BB, fold, fold, fold

Flop: (7.5 BB, 2 players) K♦ A♦ 3♣
Hero bets 5 BB, CO calls 5 BB

Turn: (17.5 BB, 2 players) J♠
Hero bets 11 BB, CO calls 11 BB

River: (39.5 BB, 2 players) 2♣
Hero bets 38 BB, CO calls 21 BB and is all-in
I would be ahead most times and was value betting, and had excellent equity. I am now wondering if I should have checked the river. Any thoughts?

Spoiler

Hero shows K♣ J♣ (Two Pair, Kings and Jacks)
(Pre 64%, Flop 80%, Turn 91%)
CO shows 4♣ 5♣ (Straight, Five High)
(Pre 36%, Flop 20%, Turn 9%)
CO wins 78.5 BB

I dont know if CO is fish or not, but you are very often ahead here either way. AA,KK,AK would 3bet pre if he is a shorty reg, he wont setmine so 33 would be a mistake from his part, so the only combo that beats you is the AJ. If he is a fish no question that we are going for his stack here. And since we are not blocking from his top pairs I would just go AI on the river. If you check the river and he is a passive player postflop, although you get good pot odds, so you will call here with two pairs you will be behind his range. That is why I prefer the bet bet line turn and river.

as played def. river value bet

not a fan of a flop play, oop vs CO rather tighter range, no possible overs to your 2ndp, FDs calls anyway -> basic rules: no need for protection, dont have 3streets of value ---> just check the flop, do the same with your weaker Axs, also sizing, why so big? what do you accomplish? you foldout out all the pairs like 88 99, calls you with KQ, Ax, get only value from his FD combos, which is not so many

overall you were super lucky to hit your 2pair OTT, I would bet bigger turn as well

The CO made a penalty blind and that would be reason for me to raise at least 4bb pre-flop and it’s also a sign of a weak player. The flop bet is close, but I don’t think it’s terrible. The rest seems standard against a mid-stack player. I expect you get still action of worse.

It’s unlucky he hits a straight this time and I would make a note of it.
Calling 2 streets with 5♣:4♣: seems fishy.

Cheers,

Hi, thanks for this insight. I'm just not there yet. So far my strategy is probably fishy.. if I think my hand strong I c-bet. And because I can't compute all this in real-time yet, I have just a few bet-sizing strategies. In this case, value-betting, I'm always around 2/3 pot trying not to give information by using different sizes.
So do I understand correctly that my hand was too strong to C-bet on the flop? Because it could have made him fold with this sizing? And I could get his short stack in on T+R?
So you advice check flop, bet bigger on the T (pot size?) and all-in on R? Outcome would be the same of course but I know that's not the point.

Thanks!

What s0cru3l meant is that if you are ahead at the moment, there are not very many cards that will change that. So you don't have to protect your hand very much here. But at the same time you just hold a second pair and CO should call with quite tight range vs UTG open. So you can't just comfortably barrel all 3 streets because you can very well be behind.

So, your hand is not worth 3 streets. You don't have to bet for protection. --> check the flop.

Very useful info indeed. Thanks!
So villain's stack size is not influencing this strategy?

Didn't think of it like that. Good tip! Thank you

I prefer the x on flop too. No need to pump the pot.
