hm very close.
the limp from the small stack might be a trap or he might have a small pair.
if you never saw him limping, then i would prefer to checl preflop.
if you saw him limp/fold in such situations then i would push preflop.

the problem is his stacksize.... this looks like a trap, an ace hits, so he might have a pair of aces now... but he might have a small pair, or a hand like KQ or KJs or stuff like that

if he has a middle pair like TT+ he will call you.
but i dont see him calling with weaker hands then yours. so your push is only looking for a fold. so this bet will not make you money in the long run. he cannot call with weaker hands and he will not fold with stronger hands.

so the check looks better. if he moves all in it depends on the reads.
if he is a very agressiv player, you might call to look him up because you win against many pairs (22-88) and against a pair between 9 and Q or a hand like AQ you have 5 outs to beat him.

but with the two very small stacks at your table, i would fold here.
you can just survive the two small stacks so if he is not a very agressiv player i fold here.

The player was a rather tight one, who only pushed with his stack size.

I never saw him limping, but I thought he might 'defend' the blinds, because the small blind was on sit out.
I think you are right about my push that no weaker hand would call, so I think check/fold or check/call would be much better.
