A long, long time ago, when smartphones were in their infancy, Twitch didn't exist, and poker sites were yet to come up with Zoom (or whatever they ended up naming it), I was spending my spare time trying to beat NL10. These attempts were documented, quite sparingly, in the original Suited poker pairs I can easily become interestd in something - but the interest can easily disappear as well. Especially when I'm failing to achieve my goals. Poker is fun when you're winning, but quickly becomes a chore during a downswing. I know there's variance, I know perseverance gets rewarded - but when you hate the thought of launching the poker client, it's hard to force yourself to keep going. There's also no way you will bring A-game in these circumstances - which results in more losses and more frustration That's exactly what happened all those years ago. I was getting bored of cash game (and couldn't consistently win at it), tried switching to SNGs, but in the end stopped trying to keep waning interest from disappearing completely. Poker went on hiatus The interest came back earlier this year, but I still couldn't find success in cash game (Speed NL5 on iPoker). I did however find reignited passion for MTTs. Last month I started playing with some leftover money on Stars, and managed to get a few deep runs, including a final table in The Big $0.55. This result allowed me to transfer some money to Party and take advantage of their offers as well. Unfortunately as it turns out I can no longer earn stratey points on Party, which is funny considering I only have an account because Pokerstrategy decided to give me a second starting capital there back in 2009 So, currently I play between $0.50 and $1.50 buy-ins on Stars and Party - sessions usually include the $0.55 bounty builder ($1.10 as well if I bust out of other tournaments and have room), the Big $1.10 and $0.55, Monster Series events, $1 180-man SNGs, and at the moment SCOOP satellites as well Here are the April graphs Big blinds: $$$ Now admittedly the $$$ graph is dominated by the big $0.55 score, and in fact April would've been a losing month without it, So it's not all rosy. Looking back, maybe the shove was loose. Fairly certain it would be in HRC pushing range, but I shoved into this guy a lot, he said "fo" in the chat after one of the shoves, and his stats weren't stellar (23 VPIP, 12 PFR). Think I should've tightened up. It's just always so painful to give people walks :f_p:

Just a mincash in the end, somewhat disappointing after the post-bubble comeback, but don't think I could've done much differently (apart from the K7s suited hand I pointed out), and the rollercoaster was fun (although the bankroll didn't appreciate it)

The other 180-man I busted early. as well as the big $0.55, The big $1.10 however... that one was a different story. Being short-stacked from the start after late reg, I was looking for an early double up - and got it, shoving TT from SB against 77 in the BU. The set me on the way - I was getting hands, winning key flips, and keeping up with the average stack. Until this hand, in which I feel I lost a lot more than I had to. Once again, I managed fold into the money, and won a couple of shoves thereafter

Should I have pushed pre? Maybe. The guy was just moved to the table, and considering it was deep into the tournament, I couldn't help but feel worried about his limp being a trap. Thought my hand allowed me to evaluate on the flop. Pity he flopped 2 pair - of course he wasn't going anywhere. And after seeing his hand, he would've almost certainly folded to a preflop shove. But who knew....

In any case, finished 64th for another deep run, $5.13 cash, and finally a profitable session! Can't complain too much

Had a 2-day break from poker as I was travelling up north (to Manchester and beyond) to my employer's head office. So just had one last session today to finish off the month. Did turn a mighty $0.05 profit to end it on a high :f_biggrin: Cashed 3 tournaments out of 5 I played, but no deep runs today

That said, a dramatic turnaround in the Big $0.55 deserves its own tale. Was sure I was out after this hand

So I did end the month with a small loss (but somehow with a positive ROI??? how exactly does it work in Hand2Note?). However, when I thought about it, I realised that this was a month of SCOOP, and I invested a lot into satellites. And the problem with satellites is, even if you win them, you don't get any money unless you cash the tournament you qualify for. Since I didn't cash any SCOOPs, all of this investment went into the loss column

Frankly, this realisation makes me less willing to play satellites in the future. I didn't feel out of place and horribly outplayed in low SCOOPs, and thought it was a good experience. However, the fact is, I also didn't feel as comfortable about high variance spots as I am in $1 tournaments. Not being able to re-enter tournaments after losing in a high variance spot also contributed to it. So I think I will be much more selective about satellites next time a major series rolls out - if I play them at all

Luckily, as I mentioned, I got some bankroll boost from watching Ryan Schoonbaert's stream and playing in his home game, and while I withdrew some money to pay for Holdem Resources Calculator licence, balance on both sites went up over the course of the month

One annoyance I have is that Party tournament schedule changed for the worse during May. Early in the month, they had a $1.10 main event at 6pm my time, and a $0.55 second chance tournament at 8pm (which I final tabled twice). The last couple of weeks, the 6pm tournament became a $3.30 buy-in (which I'm not rolled for), there's no more major at 8pm, and generally I can't find a single tournament I would want to play during session hours. Hope the situation improves soon (maybe their upcoming PKO series will bring some tournaments suitable for my tastes and bankroll), and the money I have on Party starts working again

The plan for next month is to spend more time studying. When I started this journey, I thought with my time constraints, I would maybe play 20 tournaments a week. 182 tournaments I played this month is more than twice what I expected - and while it's nice and fun, I don't know if just playing a lot, marking hands during play, and posting them into the forums is enough to get better. This approach just doesn't have enough system behind it - I can forget to mark some hands, especially towards the end of the session, and for some hands maybe I won't even realise they need extra analysis. The issue is that I normally play a session after working hours, it ends around 10-11pm, and I don't really have the desire to spend more time analysing hands and thinking about the game afterwards - I would rather do something on the lines of killing a few zombies in They Are Billions. So what I would like to do in June is to alternate play evenings and study evenings. If I end the month with 100 tournament played, but all of them properly reviewed and analysed in HRC, I'll be happy

The long Sunday session wasn't that long, only played 10 tournaments (including a bunch of 180-mans). At long last, at 82nd attempt (according to Hand2Note), managed to win a 180-man. Which instantly meant I had a profitable session, and turned June into a profitable month so far :f_biggrin:

That's the nice thing about tournaments - a single strong finish can overturn a week of miserable results

Quick update. Swamped with work. Spent the last weekend with a large project in Captivate. Which also involved listening to a lot of audio in Japanese, with Google Translate transliteration helping immensely - at least I could tell which audio matched which part of the script!

Me once again trying to win They Are Billions at the highest difficulty also didn't help poker (won the game at every level up tp 440%, but 500% still eludes me....)

Anyway, here are the June graphs. Going on break after winning a 180-man certainly helped things :f_tongue: But only 28 tourneys.... FailFish. I was talking about 100 a month ago. Missing the sub-$1 tournament series on Stars makes me sad too. But it is what it is - £20/hour I get for out of hours work is higher EV than any kind of poker :f_p:

July has come and gone, and no poker was played. I thought summer was supposed to be the time to relax, sit down, and get in the sea. Not the time of meeting multiple deadlines (have 3 next week!)

August indeed ended up being another month of no poker. September was set to be the month of the comeback.. except I received another huge project with a tight deadline!

The last few days I've been firing up a couple of tournaments at a time in the background while working, and playing them like an extreme nit. Not an approach generally recommended for those who want to play poker well. But results have been surprisingly ok so far. Over this week I had a couple of top100 runs in the Big $0.55, and won the $0.55 Second Chance on Party last night. Maybe being a nit and not trying to bluff with speculative hands is just the right way to do it in the micros

Up $13 after a week of play. Hope my complacent way of playing tournaments as background to work won't catch up to me

But... I was looking for tournaments just to add extra tables (because I get bored and do stupid things when 1-tabling) and jumped into Hotter $1.10. Normally I give turbo tournaments a miss, because I'm too nitty to shove wide enough. But I wanted to have something. And it turned out quite well, as I managed an 11th place finish for a $15 cash

That one deep run saved the day and turned it profitable. But that's why we play tournaments, right? Once good results can help overcome a day of bad ones

Won't play the full schedule over the next couple of days, Christmas is a thing after all. But then it will be full on grind mode for the rest of the winter series. So happy Stars decided to include micro stakes level events this time. Especially as it looks like Party made their tournament schedule much less friendly towards micro grinders during my hiatus

Played the Winter Series hyper events yesterday and today (didn't think I would play anything today, but the event started only a few minutes before I got home. so jumped in). Both lasted just over 60 hands and went to the same scenario - win a stack, lose a stack, win some chips, lose a flip, bust (the first one wasn't even a flip, A7 < K7). Hypers are fun, aren't they

Gearing up for a full grind tomorrow, likely will play all three holdem events. Thinking about PLO.. as I mentioned before, I'm a regular in Ryan Schoonbaert's stream, and he streams and talks about all variants of Omaha (high and hi/lo, PL and NL, and even 5-card) a lot. So I think I have a decent understanding, at least of the basics, and wouldn't be completely clueless. I can read up on the theory before the event as well. But I never actually played PLO oustide homegames, and don't know if a $2.20 tournament is a good starting point

To be honest, $2.20 is above my normal buy-in level in general, I haven't played above $1.10 thus far. But if I cash out on Party and consolidate the bankroll on Stars, I should have about $250 - good enough to afford $2.20s. And unfortunately it looks like Party got rid of all tournaments below $3.30, so money I have there is doing nothing

Two more days of Winter Series behind me, and it hasn't been spectacular so far. A few cashes here here and there, but nothing noteworthy. Don't think Hand2Note accurately tracks reentries, so can't say how exactly I'm doing so far - but pretty sure I'm down in the series tournaments. Other tournaments are keeping it from being a disaster though - had another deep run in the Hot 1.10 yesterday, finishing 97th for a fiver in payouts. Cashed it again today; funny how I've been turbo averse for a long time, and still don't know how much of an edge I have in them - but happy to cash one three days in a row

Winter Series did not treat me well. It's somewhat disheartening that I haven't been able to record a strong finish in Pokerstars major series so far. But well, that's what you sign up for in tournaments with 10k+ runners. You have a chance of a huge score for not a lot of money - but you have run well (and play well of course) to outlast this many entrants

Winter Series aside, it was a good year for me, especially considering the long break I had before coming back to the game

Not too happy about the plateau in the tail end of the graph, but it looks fairly pretty in general

The $$$ graph is dominated by my two big scores, the final table of the big $0.55 and a shipped tournament on Party

That downwards trend in the end of concerning as well. Although if we look back, I always had downwards trends just before scoring a big result. I'm sure one is right around the corner :f_p:

Seriously though, I am taking a strong critical look at my recent tournaments, and you may have seen my posts in the hand review section... I'm definitely not resting on laurels - not that I have many laurels yet!

I don't have goals for 2019 as such, especially considering I'm still working on a huge project which gets in the way of poker all too often. But I do have... nice-to-haves? A wishlist? Something like that. I won't be unhappy if I won't meet these goals, but I would like to make progress towards them:
* Improve short stacked play. Play more turbos and hypers in order to have more practice
* Add $2.20s in the mix and gain confidence playing them. Take shots at $3.30s if the bankroll allows
* Continue learning more about mixed games. I talked about Omaha before, unfortunately I can't find a PLO tournament I could comfortably fit into my schedule, but there a $1.10 HORSE tournament on Stars I could try my hand at

Here's to onwards and upwards in the new year!

Current bankroll - $190.87 (plus about $100 on Skrill cashed out from Party, but that will mostly be used to pay for Twitch subscriptions)
